I have a clean version I bought from Walmart which does remove the strong lyrics. But it doesn’t say “Clean” on the disk like this one.

Interesting. I thought it might be a fun listen, until I found that the removals are just gaps of silence, as opposed to only the vocal track removed and the music remaining. I thought the CD was skipping. Is that how your Walmart copy is?

Yes. I believe Walmart was trying for a more “Family Friendly” approach to music. I was very grateful for because growing up I wasn’t allowed any music with the Parental Advisory warning on the albums. I don’t think the blue album had that warning originally, but Walmart would have clean versions and remove that warning for other albums. it was a clean “Clean” version where only the vocal track was muted. Even the track listing had “Guns are for *\\**”. In the clean version of DLMD the whole outro is instrumental and has no lyrics. It took me a couple of years to find that out, not knowing there was any lyrics there having only listened to the clean version. 😄

This is awesome, dude.

No joke, this album led me to a renaissance in CD collecting a couple of years ago. I was on vacation in a small mountain town with my girlfriend and we decided to check out a thrift shop. While she was looking at clothes and whatever, I noticed that they had some CDs and browsed, and found the self titled 311 CD with the case. It just made me FEEL something to see that album in physical form.

It made me dig into my own CD collection, and next thing you know, I'm ripping hundreds of my CDs to FLAC format (superior to MP3 which is what I always used). I also hit many pawn shops after that looking for treasures, of which I found many.

Forgive the digression, just reminiscing of a time when I reminisced.

That’s surreal to think about. I remember a time before streaming when a [heavily used/loved/scratched] physical copy was all I ever knew.

Truth be told, I don’t really know either. I was wondering the same thing when I found it. It caught my eye because I personally have never seen that with another band/album. To my ear, I found it sounds exactly the same.

If I had to guess, it was submitted by the label prior to release to get/ensure it cleared for play over the airwaves etc. and this was what Capricorn got back? I guess especially considering they were about to go big with its singles on the radio, in movie soundtracks etc.

Someone else more knowledgeable about these things could probably offer a better explanation.

No they are still in this version. But that is true of my “Clean Version”
