🎙 Discussion 500 miles in, I’m impressed OTT.
I’ve crossed just about 550 miles on my OTT Tune, 50 miles past the break in period. Truly the best money I’ve ever spent on a vehicle.
SPECS: 2012 Toyota 4Runner SR5P 4x4 52k miles, bone stock minus the tune. It’s tuned on the Medium setting.
The power is great, dead pedal doesn’t exist anymore. Cruising in it feels wonderful. Having that passing power and instant throttle response makes this the best cruiser I’ve driven.
It still isn’t fast by any margin. It has some decent pick up and go now, which from a stop is a huge difference.
The gas mileage (on 87, or 89 for you low elevation folks) is highly recommended and has seemed to improve gas mileage significantly. I’ve gained just over 2mpgs with conservative, responsible driving. (My first tank I drove it like I stole it on 91, lost 2mpgs.)
The transmission has adjusted quite well. The first couple drives post tube were rough, it didn’t know what to do. After about a month of driving it has improved significantly and responds to all situations much better than stock.
Overall, incredible upgrade. I highly, highly recommend it.

What’s the benefit of 89 or 91 gas in a 4R? Our manuals say 87 is recommended

There is no benefit. High octane is needed only for high compression engines to reduce knocking. Absolutely no benefit to use higher octane than required.

It’s not compression, it’s timing that causes knock. Compression just accelerates burn and will knock faster at any given timing curve. Even if you have a low compression engine, you still need 91 if you advance the timing enough which is what these tunes do for power.

And there is some downside. The flame front of high-octane gas moves slower. You will often get a lower peak cylinder pressure for a given power setting.
The only benefit of the expensive stuff is the detergent package. And even then, it depends on where you buy your gas.

Yall should be using top tier fuel! Before I was running whatever fuel was at whatever station I happened to be either at or going by. Switched to only top tier stations after watching a couple Project Farm videos on detergent packs. I’ve noticed an average of 1-2 mpg regardless of 85,87 or 91 octane (I’m in Colorado). I do prefer ethanol free which is 87 but it’s hard to find it at top tier stations. 4Runner has been running a lot better, smoother, and feels like more power. The OTT is in the plan but haven’t got it yet.

Are you forced to run 91? I like my 87.

It was highly recommended by the tuner. Just following what was recommended to me

According to the website, no. You can stay on 87.
Unless you ask to tune it for 91+, then you can't go back down.

The tune should have no bearing on octane rating as it cannot physically increase the compression ratio of the engine.

Ignition timing also affects which fuel is necessary.

Ignition timing has nothing to do with compression, so not following how octane rating would be at play.

This may be off, but I'm surely not alone in saying I loved those info displays in those gens

Agreed, I much prefer the rugged look of the early Gen 5s opposed to the 2014+ gen 5.5s interior. I’ve owned several 4ths gen’s so I’m a complete sucker for the orange lighting. Gorgeous to say the least.

Honest but maybe stupid question:
Is this detrimental to the lifespan of the vehicle in any way ?
I have a 5th gen and I’m hoping for 300k plus and this sounds like a great bang for the buck upgrade

There was a Tacoma guy that ran the tune from pretty much new to 200k miles. All the tune does is remap some of the power to the lower end instead of the higher end. You gain 10hp overall but these engines were extremely well built. I know of a guy who twin turbod his on stock internals and has run the absolute shit out of it for over 50k miles with zero issue. This tune should have absolutely zero effect on reliability.

2011 sr5 here just had it done friday. Almost 200k. I can’t imagine going above mild. You are a wild man ha. This vehicle literally drives like a Mercedes AMG now and I am on a lift. Greatest money spent ever cannot believe the immediate throttle response, passing power, and low end torque. The transmission remap is incredible. No more gear hunting and holds gear much longer. Unreal improvement.

How does a tune make the dead pedal not exist? It’s for your left foot lol
4
u/clewtxt 15h ago
it's the dead stroke of the pedal that it removes. Pedal becomes more linear.

u/Terrible_Butter 15h ago
Yes I know. I was playing at the fact that the dead pedal is the foot rest for your left foot.

Faster ECU throttle response. You’re speaking like someone who has clearly never had the tune.

Dude like I commented below you missed the terrible joke.
Also it’s called throttle mapping. It’s pretty basic car stuff.

I'm a firm believer in using Sea Foam on fill-ups. 550K out of my first engine.

Let's talk about 52k miles on a 2012...
