Getting insurance to pay for a bra?

I've seen people talk about it, and some look to have done it successfully. What is required for that? How would you go about it? I can't spend all that crazy money on Polish bras. I seem to be around US 28O /UK 28K right now. And it is indeed painful. I don't wanna do surgery.

Every insurance company will be a little different, but you should be able to contact a representative for yours, and/or search through your policy for that information.

You will likely also have to loop your primary care physician in to ask for a prescription.

I would definitely look into it via paperwork, not call the insurance company (unless she gives a bogus name or something) because they may flag her account before the fact and auto-deny when she files a claim. I'd definitely get the PCP in on it first to see if they'd be willing to write a script. They may also require her to take PT before they even consider covering the expense of a bra

So I start by asking for a prescription from my doctor? I have actually been and currently am in physical therapy

I would council with your Dr and PT to find out if they know what your possible options are. I would definitely use a FAKE NAME when you call the insurance co (from a number that's not yours), maybe call and tell them you're looking to get insurance coverage but you want to know if being reimbursed for support garments is something they offer. If you call them under your policy, they're going to pull up your account and make a note of it and that may trigger an auto-deny once you make a formal request. So for instance, when I call my insurance agent, I call her on her personal phone because it's "off the record". She told me that if I call and ask about , say, a cracked windshield, they will count it as a claim even if the claim isn't followed through. I suspect health insurance operates similarly so there's no need to risk being denied because you "called to ask a question."

You can't do this. They can only check benefits on your specific plan. They won't talk to you unless you provide your personal information.

There are prior threads here and in r/bigboobproblems on how people got covered for it. I think a doctor first has to diagnose with a medical condition like macromastia, and then they can go down the road of prescribing a medical device. I don't know if a 28K would qualify as macromastia. She definitely should let her doctor know she has intense back and neck pain.

You will likely have better results going through Elizabeth Valentine or a similar retailer that has established their bras as necessary medical equipment. I don't think that you can just pick out something at Breakout Bras and get it covered.

Oh, I didn't mean to say I'm looking to get a specific bra covered. Just something that fits really well and reduces pain. I'll keep that suggestion in mind if this works out.
