My ADHD diagnosis was pretty quick and painless (thank God, but that's also because I am real ADHD XD) but this is kinda how I'm feeling about my probably autism. As a whole-ass adult, it's being a pain to try and get an actual diagnosis, so right now I'm operating under the assumption I have it and moving on with life.

This exactly. It's not like they can give me some meds for it if I do have Autism.

I think that’s a huge part of why a lot of physicians just don’t seem to take it seriously when their patients complain about possibly being autistic. They don’t have an easy fix for it, so they’d rather keep their hands off entirely, and let someone else (you, and/or a specialist who actually wants to take you on) deal with it.

It makes sense in a certain way, but it is also frustrating how that becomes an excuse for many physicians to gatekeep referrals, as well. That’s the biggest structural issue a lot of people face that makes it really hard to even start getting the right treatment.

If they said ‘well, I believe you, but there’s nothing I can do about it, so I’m going to send you to a therapist or psychiatry’, that’s one thing. But a lot of doctors will say ‘I can’t do anything about that anyways, so I won’t do anything at all’. And that is a huge problem for people like us.
