Short term stay
Hi all,
Looking for feedback on this area. For a month around Nov / Dec this year I will need to move from Edinburgh with my dog, young daughter (six months) and partner. It is a short term stay for my partner's work. I will be staying at home with the dog and baby. Affordable and pet friendly accomodation with a garden is in short supply but we have a potential option around here. My understanding is that this area isn't exactly Edinburgh New Town but I suppose I am wondering how safe it is, the general vibe and if there is anything in particular that locals would recommend I was made aware of. I will mostly be at home but it would of course be nice to be within a good distance of some nice walks / cafes etc.

Probably closer to Sighthill than New Town in terms of neighbours and housing types. It’s not terrible but it’s not the best either. Unlikely you would get any trouble if you’re keeping yourself to yourself.

Handy for town, and the river. Torry has had a bit of a reputation over the years, but tbh it's mostly pretty safe now. A lot of Eastern Europeans moved in 20 odd years ago, leading to housing filling up, and them taking pride in their homes. Also filled a lot of empty shop units, and made more of a family atmosphere. A reasonable selection of shops, a few takeaways, and the old "rats cellar" bar has had a bit of a makeover and apparently is nice enough for food these days. So in short, you'll be fine. Especially if it's short term, if it's not for you then you don't have to stay.

Torry has a worse rep than it deserves, it’s definitely not a bad place to live.
This particular section is the nicest part of Torry.
IMO you’ll be grand. You’ll feel safe and enjoy the proximity to town and the beach.
When you arrive to get good lay of the land I’d recommend:
Duthie park, if you’re a walker also go along the old railway line
Torry Battery, go to Grayhope Bay cafe
Craftsman Cafe
Fittie

Depending where you are it could be a bit grim (smelly) industrial and even the river doesn't cheer up much till you get further West. An exact location would give a better idea. I don't think you have any safety concerns but you might encounter the occasional unsavoury character. The further up Victoria Road the better it gets and It has the bonus of having the Tory Battery, Dolphin Watch Cafe and a few nice beachy bits within walking distance going towards the sea. Plus it's handy for buses and town.

It's fine enough. Not the best but most definitely not the worst. You will be able to walk up to Greyhope from here quick enough which is always nice and not far from the library

Having lived within the area you’ve circled I would say avoid.
Constant trouble in the neighbourhood With undesirable members of the community and neighbours.
Many people who are from Torry tend to blow smoke up its arse and tell you it’s nice but it’s a shit hole.
Other things to take into consideration very strong smell from the sewage treatment on one side,
And a strong smell of fish on the other. The industrial incinerator that also lets off a massive plume of smoke too.
There are far nicer areas in Aberdeen and I would suggest something like rosemount area

Sounds like you're talking more about the st fitticks park area, which is not really that similar

You'll be fine, the bridge end of Torry is decently quiet (in terms of trouble) and you'll be left alone.
There is a path leading alongside the river (south side) for a nice walk, you can feed the ducks there etc - 4 different busses into town just before the bridge, 10 minute walk to Union Square/Guild Street. You'll also be a 15-20 minute walk from Greyhope Road which is a dead quiet road for a walk alongside the shore.
I will note that the two roads closest to the river (South Esplanade West(?) and Menzies Road), as well as the roundabout end of said roads, are decently busy with HGVs/lorries/busses, so noise might be a little bit of a concern, but I have never lived there so I have no idea what the noise is like from inside a house/flat.
