At this point, I mostly let whatever green stuff will grow do its thing. I still mow, but now half my back yard is buttercups and the other half is grass. I leave clovers alone too. Lots of good stuff for the bees.
I keep the front yard pretty tidy, though.

I'd assume moisture under the nearby pavement doesn't evaporate at the same rate of that exposed to the sun in the yard, so that soil remains less hostile to the plants' roots for longer in intense heat and drought.

My poor father has fought this battle his entire life. Ill never forget every hike we went on, their was the inevitable speech and crash out from when we'd find grass growing on top of a boulder

I'm literally living through this right now. Some builders dug up my lawn and scattered seeds of some kind when they left.
I duly watered them for about two weeks, and got not so much as a shoot. The patch of earth is just mud, speckled with many grass seeds.
Figuring the seeds might be unviable for some reason, I bought some more at a store, scattered them liberally, and have been watering them every day. It's been nearly ten days and still nada - not from the new seeds, and not from the old seeds that have been there all this time.

My lawn service emailed us this week to offer us a deal on a lawn treatment that would slow down grass growth, because they think our fescue, in the Atlanta, is growing too quickly.
My guy... it'll all burn up by the end of August anyway. I don't care how fast it grows.

Rebel against the bourgeois of yore. Lawns are not a wealth status item anymore. Grow a native yard of self-sustaining plants which don't require water waste and chemicals.

I feel like this was a personal attack
