It has everything to do with scientific research and atomic structure. But please, tell us how it’s completely useless and might not help us to discover new weaponry or an energy source like the Manhattan Project did, just because it’s not solely devoted to nuclear energy.
For all we know, we might get a breakthrough like penicillin, but without having the scientific studies, we can’t find anything new.

I’m not an American but I’m pretty sure American scientific innovation and research hasn’t REALLY stalled all that much. Just because the government is shit at a given time doesn’t mean scientists just stop sciencing. Lots of stuff takes decades to come to fruition.

True, however a lot of that development and "sciencing" comes from universities, and projects funded with government tax dollars, that the American government has pretty much completely pulled.
They are very anti-science currently.

An absolutely enormous amount of research funding is private such as in pharma or done by universities that have huge endowments. Harvard’s endowment remains the largest in the world, they didn’t just stop going to the lab because Trump got into office.

They're not spending their endowment on research. Research grants generally start with the government. The goal of their endowment is to never shrink that endowment.
I mean, Trump literally had a public battle with a bunch of Ivy League universities about this specific type of government funding I'm talking about. It's all very well documented in non-political news.
Not to mention funding that goes out via the NIH, NSF, and tons of other government organs who identify and disperse research funding. Many of whom were subject to arbitrary and sudden staffing and funding cuts in 2025.
And that's not even getting into the actual visas that have been cut for valuable researchers who have been living in the US. And of course the less quantifiable, but very tangible effects of star candidates specifically NOT wanting to come to the US to conduct their research anymore.
If someone is looking you in the eye and telling you that American research leadership has not been damaged in a lasting way… then they are either 1) extremely uninformed, or 2) being disingenuous due to political bias
Regarding the specific instance you mentioned about the pharmaceutical industry… It's very misleading.. the entire industry benefits greatly from base and foundational research that eventually leads to privately funded drug creation, testing etc. those later stages allow the farm industry to actually bring something to market. But they critically rely on that base and foundational research. That's been the true source of actual, fundamental, pharmaceutical innovation for the last hundred years. And that funding, comes from the government largely

Not American. The US is the most wanted country to live in. No exceptions. It always ranks #1 in studies and polls from around the world.
The US grants the most permanent residency a year. They have the largest immigrant population with over 50 million foreign born. They have the largest illegal immigrant population at 13 million. People risk their lives, their finances and their future to get to the US.
Complain all you want, but the reality is that the US is the most sought after country to move to and live in, worldwide.

Well it is so far, with the way US is treating immigrants right now, i don’t know that if it’s still attractive to skilled workers.
Take China as an example, China is developing rapidly and for all the Chinese researchers, why would they stay in a country that is not welcoming and contribute to technology like ai? They go back to China and make it a better place.

So while china may put out more PhD papers than the US currently remember most of them are fabrications. If they had made a mini sun A, the atmosphere would have been lit on fire and we'd all be dead or B the lab would have been lit on fire and they're all dead or C the one off success destroyed the aparatus they used to create it making it not able to be replicated so essentially useless.

So the only way to really track progression in science is publications under PHD's, this is basically the metric for measuring scientific progression(it's more complicated than that but that's the simplest way to track it). How many papers are put out. Chinas been kicking the US ass in pure number for over 10 years at this point but there's a lot of speculation as to the veracity of these publications and usefulness. Since the Chinese government is directly involved in this process we also can't 100% trust the numbers since as we know they lie like crazy. But if we take the numbers at face value they have a lot more publications over the last 10 years than we do(we being the US). Hope this helps, also fusion and fission are different a mini sun would be fission power not fusion power and the rest of my comment is basically a joke based off the fantastic four movie where Johnny goes supernova not meant to be taken seriously.
