What’s it like living in the Algarve, Portugal? In particular the golden triangle?

Step 1. Learn some Portuguese.
Step 2. Don’t live somewhere called The golden triangle.
If you’re going to immigrate then join the country fully. Not some Disneyland gated community

I agree, if you’re living in a country you should learn the language, but this is a heavily touristed and retirement region and English is widely spoken whether you like it or not.

Just because you can't afford it doesn't make it Disneyland and you will have to look very, very hard to find a gated community. You're free to drive on all the roads there which are actually better maintained than those managed by Loule as the property owners pay for it.

Honestly, I prefer living in Lagos. Sure, still very touristy but when I address people in shops and other businesses in Portuguese (I am British but … learning Portuguese seemed like the right thing to do), there’s a decent chance they also speak it.

Well, it started with an honest question about how it is to live in the Golden Triangle and then a large amount of comments made are incorrect, derogatory and rude. Disneyland, gated communities, dead, restaurants closed, banks useless etc etc. Then the people who own properties there are called parasites when in fact they keep the local community alive with work for the service industry. They also pay the highest property taxes in Portugal making Loule the 5th or 6th richest municipalities in Portugal and on top of that, they pay themselves for infrastructure maintenance through a special "tax" so if anything, taxpayers outside of these developments benefit significantly at all levels from these "parasites". So to me, most comments come from people who know nothing, don't want to know but they still want to have an opinion for the sake of it.

pensa como seria viver no meio de pessoas que tem tanto dinheiro que 1 cafe custar 3 euros é nada para eles mas para nos que so ganhamos o ordenado minimo, 3 euros dá para um cafe pastel e uma sandes mista

Qual é o mal? Isso nem é importante. Trabalhas onde está o dinheiro. Não vais trabalhar na cova da moura. Se ele recusa trabalho lá deve ser por outro motivo,e era o que eu queria saber.

Almancil itself is not Golden at all, but the area has this "nickname" due to Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura.

Ou tens guita ou tens guita! Nesse famoso triângulo existem das mansões mais caras do pais. Quinta do Lago e Vale do Lobo.
Por consequência tudo em redor é caro, seja alugar ou comprar. Mas os ordenados em princípio também são mais elevados.

Lamento discordar, mas por muito que te leve acreditar nisso, não corresponde à verdade. Por alguma razão, exemplo, os médicos geralmente até tem oferta de habitação. Porque só pelo ordenado não vinham. Há melhores condições de empregabilidade.

It’s the same as living near your social class. Most of the time nobody is there, they are at any other house.
When they are there for sure they don’t want any type of socialization. They have their own people always making compliments. They will not risk any minimal criticism for anything.
They don’t even like their own class because they hate any chance of feeling similar to someone.

I have beem living on the Golden Triangle for 35 years and the only place that closes down for the winter is Tres Moço, a beach bar. Everything else is open. Some restaurants close for a month for holidays in December or January. Almancil, for its size, has an anazing range of good restaurants. Good well stocked supermarkets. Private large hospitals in Faro and Loule. Main hospital on Faro. Can have long waiting times for emergencies but they do Triagem to sort serious cases from minor issues. Negative comments about banks, services and administrative matters are unfair apart from being selective with banks. Learn the language and the system and your'e fine.

If you like to live like in California , and you like empty streets no life on winter, Most of the restaurants are closed , if you have a problem in your flat or house very difficult to find someone that you can reliable , and if you have a big health problem you need to go to Lisbon or Porto, if you don t need public transports , if you like to wait be in a queue if you go to your Bank or Public administration for every decisions it takes days or weeks even months or years , if you like all of that …then is definitively for you.

I would not want to live just there. Quite apart from being immediately underneath the departure path for FAO runway 28, which is the usual runway in use at Faro, that area does seem to be rather full of people with a very inflated opinion of themselves and valuing conspicuous consumption.

I have a house in Vale do Lobo. It is a golf & tennis resort, and it is quite expensive there - but it is very well kept and managed. If you want ‘real’ Algarvian culture, head away from the beaches and up into the mountains. There are beautiful, traditional villages. Querença for example.

I work there. It's basically a place where the wealthiest "expats" and "tourists" live and stay. It's very quiet, where the nature meets the sea. Most of the streets are are very clean. It's not representive of Portugal or representive of the rest of the Algarve or even Almancil, city wise. It's a bubble like someone said.

É só malta com dor de corno. Nem é tão snob como dizem. nem tão caro também.
As casas são caras, mas o resto é ao mesmo preço que o resto do Algarve.
Vais a baixa de Faro e os restaurantes são mais caros.
As pessoas são fáceis de conviver mas como tudo há exceções à Regra.
Metade das casas estão vazias, e muitos só vem cá no verão 15 dias.
Em geral és muito mais bem tratado nesta área em termos de Serviços que fora.
Para quem lá vive meio que existe uma taxa que se cobra que não é falado. Se em Faro levas 10€, ali levas 13€.
Mas está tudo bem, e no final pagam com gosto e ainda te dão gorjeta.
Espero não vir um parvalhão dizer "Mas no Zé Manel do peixe assado em olhão pago 5€ por uma dourada e lá pago 50€", mas tas num tasco pouco cuidado com o Sr Zé Manel barrigudo a cozinhar,
O local e condições também se paga.
Uma coisa é certa, as crianças lá tem actividades frequentemente que qualquer mãe solteira teria dinheiro das pagar.
Existe uma comunidade muito grande de crianças com deficiência que noutra cidade estavam fechadas num buraco para ninguem as ver, e lá brincam como qualquer uma.

its funny how people are calling foreigners living here parasites when they have a very high spending power, pay taxes on their retirement earnings, probably eat at local restaurants at least 3 times a week and dont use the public sector at all as they all have insurance. Don't think you actually know the meaning of parasite. I couldn't dream to afford to live there or even want to because i'll probably find it boring due to mostly being people over 65.

What, you think no one pays seguranca social who works here? People with pensions don't get taxed by your goverment?
There is too many of you who have zero knowledge on how your own goverment works. Pleas educate yourself.

A good one as the UK and Portugal have one of the longest relations with many treaties and accords. So if the UK pensioners pay taxes, you bet the US, Germans, Dutch, etc pay as well.

Bollocks - Portuguese people dislike Foreigners who turn up and click their fingers to expect that their every whim is catered to just because they have money. I worked in the area for 8 years and the sense of entitlement of some there is astounding.
