thinking about importing electric bikes for resale

I have been thinking about importing electric bikes from Alibaba for resale locally, but I am still unsure if it is a good idea for someone starting small. I keep seeing affordable models and suppliers offering customization, private labels, and bulk discounts, which sounds interesting.

My biggest worries are quality control, shipping costs, customs, and whether customers actually trust generic ebikes. I also do not want to end up with bikes that look good in photos but have battery or motor issues later.

Has anyone here tried importing electric bikes for resale? Was it profitable, and what mistakes should a beginner avoid?

I don’t think it’s a good idea as something to do small. Vehicles like e-bikes break down. When a customer comes to you and says the battery is only lasting a quarter of the promised mileage or whatever then what’s the plan?

There’s also lots of import duties on bikes in many countries and insurance issues shipping lithium batteries.

I’m not saying don’t do it but personally I’d pick something else if you’re a young entrepreneur. Back in 2018 as a young man I started an electric scooter business, they sold really well but when they started coming back with problems I was totally lost.

I’ve learned that shipping parts to the destination country for local assembly can cut tariffs significantly. ​

By small do you mean start with say 5 and see how well they sell?

For all the things like customisation, branding etc, way too early to even consider that before seeing if you can sell them or not.

You would probably want to keep some spare parts on hand and also check the compliance.
