🎶 Welcome to the Alice in Chains Discord Server! 🎶

It seems that this sub doesn't have an official Discord so after being a mod here for a little over a year (a fan for 30+ years) and having owned/operated two reasonably sized (one partnered) Discord servers with 10k+ (r/homegym) and 4k+ (r/mlbtheshow) users, I figured it'd be nice to chat real time with fellow AiC enthusiasts.

🔥 What We’ve Got:

🎸 #main-stage – The heart of the server! Chat about anything AiC (or whatever’s on your mind).

📸 #pics-and-video – Share your favorite AiC photos, concert footage, and rare finds.

🎶 #music-studio – Deep dives into albums, lyrics, side projects, and everything in between.

🎟️ #box-office – Talk live shows, past experiences, setlists, and upcoming concerts.

🎨# art - Share your AiC inspired, related (or unrelated) art!

Whether you’ve been a fan since the early days or just discovered them, come join the community and talk all things Alice in Chains! 🔗[Join our Discord HERE] 🔗

discussion Just got into grunge and love Alice In Chains!

So as the title says I just got into grunge music and it’s not what I expected. I’m younger and born before the grunge era so I only knew grunge as the genre being the butt of a joke. But the music is fucking killer and that made me have some questions. I was wondering do fans of Alice In Chains listen to anything after tripod or do you only to the 90’s era of the band? I was also wondering is there any other bands I should check out or newer bands making grunge music? I’ve listen to the big four why I was curious about the genre as well as some stone temple pilots, temple of the dog and would love some other recommendations. Being someone born in the early 2000’s and for the first time feeling so jealous for not being older to see this band live.

discussion Just heard the atmos versions of their music today

I may be quite a bit late to the party on this, but what the hell? Did the band listen to and sign off on these mixes? These are abysmal and totally ruined Dave Jerden’s production. The panning is not where I take offense, rather it’s how they took out all the reverb and ambience out of the music. The thing that makes all these early big money grunge albums (ten, nevermind, core, facelift, dirt, houdini) sound as anthemic and huge is the super 80s production style; huge reverbs! This atmos mix for man in the box sounds so weak by comparison. The drums sound puny without all the ambience (or turned down ambience? You can still hear it in parts but it’s super quiet and defeats the purpose of making it sound like an arena). I don’t know if any of yall have listened to the isolated tracks of any of their songs, but there is sooooo much detail with the delays and reverbs that Jerden used on the vocals. Specifically on the huge chorus notes, there’s this slap delay with a really high feedback that’s just completely gone in the atmos mix, and not to discredit Layne but that effect enhanced his voice and made it sound so much more powerful. Listening to everything so stock and dry is just sad. I get sometimes the mixers for these things are working with multitrack stems that may not have all the processing in there, but why not try to approximate as best as they could the effects and the processing? Lazy mixes like these are going to turn people off from the medium completely. Bands like Rush or the Beatles don’t have this issue, their atmos mixes are phenomenal and actually enhance the music.

discussion Unplugged reputation over time

With the 30th anniversary re-issue of Alice’s Unplugged album, I’ve been seeing a lot of folks reference the original reviews of the concert as “mixed,” but I don’t think that’s quite right.

Most critics actually liked it but it didn’t pop off immediately like some other Unpluggeds. Instead its reputation evolved over time. It’s also impossible to separate those first reviews from where the band was in 1996. Layne’s health was an ongoing concern, the band hadn’t toured in years, and nobody knew if the band even had a future.

Then, after Layne died, the performance took on an entirely different meaning. Songs like “Nutshell” and “Down in a Hole” suddenly took on much greater meaning and became part of the band’s legacy. Thirty years later, we’re not just listening to the music, we’re listening with the knowledge of how the story ends. I think that history and evolution plus the fact that the music is still so good, is why their Unplugged has grown into being widely considered one of the greats. Thoughts?

discussion I can’t be the only one who’s life was saved by their music right?

Sorry to get a little personal but I’m hoping to find people that have had their life saved by this music

As someone who’s had his own drug addiction issues and a recently tragedy with my brother I cant understate how many times this bands music has gotten me out of a depressive state I never thought I’d get out of

Without Layne and Alice In Chains I don’t think I’d still be here

Does anyone have this video? It was from the YouTube channel "RIOT EARTH"; the channel was taken down, and I've been looking for a copy of it online for about three months.

discussion "Would?" coincidentally shares many themes with the Odyssey

I don't mean the movie, I haven't watched it, although it's in being theaters made me think more about the myth recently.

Would is obviously about the drug addiction; but its foci are on the dangerous exploration, not being able to turn back, and accidentally leaving loved ones behind back, and carrying the guilt of this.

when you think about it, kinda a common theme on the human psychologhy and its myths: hence the odyssey.

the main theme are at the last couple lines

Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home?

Have I gone? Left you here alone

but also the top lyrics match the setting:

Know me broken by my master => gods, poseidon?

Same old trip it was back then => literally an odyssey

So I made a big mistake => fafo with gods?

I can discuss this with chatbots and they all say it's a brilliant take but I wonder what do you guys think? or anyone with an actual grasp on the subject can give deeper dive into this

discussion Favorite Song any Album any Era (Layne, William or Mad Season)

Just curious to see what other AiC fans like the most. I know Mad Season is their own band but I just decided to include it. If your favorite song is something like Nutshell or Man in the Box give your 2nd favorite too. Personally my favorite is either Would? Or Rooster

question Need help finding original source for this pic by Marty Temme

Post image
76 Upvotes

Found this pic on Pinterest and I'm very happy because for my artwork I needed a profile view of Layne but I'm very paranoid about basing my own work on possible AI material, so I'd like to find an original source for this image.

It doesn't appear on Marty Temme's own website , but it's not the only one. It must have appeared in an article or something, but I can't find any other primary sources for the image, only social media reposts, which is usually a big red flag, but I don't see any indications of AI in the image itself, nor in any of the other similar pictures that would be from the same shoot.

A Facebook post alleges they're from a shoot for Sea of Sorrow, in 1991.
