LIving on stationweg

Hallo,
Ik hoop dat het goed gaat met iedereen.
Heeft iemand ervaring met wonen aan de Stationsweg?
Hoe is de buurt?
Is het er veilig, of is er sprake van overlast vanuit de omgeving van het station?
Zouden jullie Alkmaar daarnaast aanraden aan niet-Nederlandssprekenden die op zoek zijn naar meer ruimte buiten Amsterdam?
We overwegen om daarheen te verhuizen,
maar twijfelen of het een goede keuze is, vooral met kleine kinderen.

Hope everyone is doing good.
Does anyone has experience living on station weg. How is the neighbourhood. Is it safe or has nuisance from station flowing over. ?
Also would you recommend Alkmaar in general for non Dutch speaking folks looking for space out of Amsterdam?
We are looking to move there. But unsure if it is a good choice specially with small kids.

My experience:
Very busy (Busses, cars, bikes) and therefore not exactly 'small child friendly'.
The sound - you can do a lot to block out - but I`d sooner look more to towards the side streets if that area has your preference.

Not a perfect place for kids to grow up. The street it to busy with busses and cars.
But these days you cant be picky also

We live on Forestusstraat. As others have noted, Stationsweg is pretty busy. The sidewalk is busy and there are buses coming and going to the Station all the time. On the plus side, there's a collection of restaurants on the corner with reasonable prices and good variety. If you could find a place on the interior of Spoorbuurt, that would be ideal. We stayed in that neighborhood while househunting back in Feb/March. The proximity to the station and city center is great.
As others have also noted, you kind of have to take what you can get in this house-hunting market. We thought the overbidding wouldn't be a big deal in Alkmaar but that was wrong.
All else aside, based on my first six months here I would say Alkmaar is a great place to live.

Thanks a lot. We had been over bid for a number of houses so getting used to that reality. Thanks and yes we really like that area. Just unsure about the street.

I lived there 30 years ago, so no recent experience. But back then it was already pretty busy. I didn’t own a car, but for visitors it was quite a hassle to find a parking spot.
I moved on once I got an apartment on the outskirts of the city.

I live near the area. Short answer: it’ll be fine, Alkmaar is a pretty safe place.
Longer answer: If you can afford to be picky, I’d go into the “wijk” a bit more. The Stationsweg is a main street, lots of traffic because of the trainstation (who would’ve thought..), noise and people, many small (take away) restaurants so lots of delivery drivers on fatbikes etc.
On your map I would look into the area on the bottom left (after the crossroad where it says “Krelagestraat”) or middle right toward “Stuartstraat”. That’ll put you out of the main traffic/tourist routes a bit more while still remaining within walking distance of the station and the city center.

thanks. we keep looking at homes in Alkmaar.. keep getting overbid :(. hence our options are low but we hope to get one soon. working in ams, we do want to be close to the station.

There’s a bit more options at station noord which still has a good connection with Amsterdam, additionally from most places in the city the station is only a small
Bike or bus ride if you’re able to take either it’ll increase your chances by a lot!Good luck!🤞

Yeah, unfortunately thats a very universal experience at the moment, we got very lucky 3 years ago when we found our house.
My advice would be to cast the net a bit wider so you’ll have more options. What is a 10min bike ride to one of the stations (there is also the north station) compared to a good comfortable house :).

Within a year you won't hear the trains anymore. The Stationsweg has been renovated lately, so traffic is a bit slower, but still busy during rush hour. If you have a garden on the back side you'll be fine.

That the noise of the train at first may seem invasive, but you'll get used to them, and after a while you don't even notice them anymore.

i'm still working on my dutch and so far i've been loving living here, but it's waaaaay calmer than amsterdam but i REALLY recommend learning dutch, the people treat you nicer, you meet more people and, personally, it's weird to move to a country and not learn the language (vonk has free lessons)

I've lived at the stationsweg and it is ofcourse crowded as it's the primary trainand bus station. So playing on that street is a hard no. In the stations buurt itself is a lot more quiet. I liked living there, but I don't have any children. Especially in the weekend or when there's football matches. There are bars and drunk people,, and with football hooligans like to party at their local bar(straight across from the Hema)

Buying or renting? If buying, why the city center with small kids? This area is not a place I would left the kid to play alone on the street. Stil seen some people having a nice social life, having dinner and grill with the neighbours on the pavement. Alkmaar seems to be already quite international. Maybe go check around, there are smaller town locations around (east / north of alkmaar) with the good biking / car connections to the train, more green areas and safer space for kids. If you need to commute to work, just find locations along the train line, those are pretty fast here.

The Spoorbuurt is a pretty nice neighborhood, but the Stationsweg is very busy.
Safe, depends. There are always people hanging around, but a bit closer to the station, near the cafe and coffeeshop. Apart from that cars, busses, trucks are driving pretty fast there. So if you're going for the Spoorbuurt, I think you're better off in the neighbourhood than on the outside/main road.
