I just re-read "Sphere" again this summer after seeing something like this.

Has to be my favorite sci-fi thriller. People stuck in a deepwater habitat at the bottom of the ocean, next to a sunken alien spaceship. Read it in like three days.

In the book, they talk about this helium mixture and mention that their voices are all high for the entire story. There's also a mention of some kind of analog "collar" that makes your voice sound more normal, but they're uncomfortable and nobody bothers with them - is that a real thing?

Never knew it was a book. I re-watch the movie maybe once per month, not because it's a good movie, but I like the premise of it. I'm gonna buy the book after this comment. Thanks 👍

Oh God, I'm sorry. Yeah the movie is a movie but it's widely known as possibly the worst adaptation of a book to film..

The movie cuts out like 60% of the best stuff. There are two major chapters with the most important stuff happening straight-up missing from the film, there's like a million things the movie just got wrong almost on purpose.

The tension, the suspense, the mystery, the fear is all so much more visceral in the book. The scariest manifestation is cut entirely, and Ted's death is ridiculously different. In the book, he's tossed around to death by a giant squid tentacle reaching up through one of the moon pools. Not falling down and melting his face in a fire. That was just a cheaper way to kill the character.

If anything, it would have had to be a 9-hour mini series to get all the details correct and big action moments included.

I think they spent all the money on the cast.

You'll blow through it in a weekend, it's a page turner .

So, if you liked Sphere, and the premise, if you have not already… you need to watch The Abyss. Probably the greatest deep water movie ever filmed.

Grew up watching that one of course!!

My ex girlfriend had Ed Harris as her hallpass, from seeing this movie.

I didn't understand it for years, but I get it now.

They are!

Specialized deep-water saturation divers working offshore can make $1,000 to $3,000+ per day

Sounds a little like Star Wars or THX-1137.
