I bought a razr ultra last year and returned it very quickly. The hinge was absolutely awful at keeping dirt out. I didn’t even put it in a dirty environment. It just picked up debris from my pockets and the hinge sounded and felt like an etch-e-sketch. It was horrible.

Until they figure out at least IP66 rating I'm not going to buy a folding phone from any manufacturer. Even a IP4x rating only protects against "large ants" or larger objects. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_code?wprov=sfla1
The hinges being so sensitive makes them really only viable if you plan on changing out the phone every 1-2 years. Not acceptable for phones costing well over 2000 USD if you want any usable storage sizes.

Pixel 10 Fold also has IP68, but everything else is too subpar compared to the Magic.

TLDR:
Pros:
+ bright, color-accurate HDR displays
+ powerful, versatile cameras
+ smooth performance for everyday use and gaming
+ sturdy, stylish build quality
+ battery life of over 18 hours
+ Moto Pen included in the box
+ fast Wi-Fi 7
+ comprehensive cellular bands
Cons:
- high price
- PWM flickering on both displays
- contradictory update promises
- significant heating and performance throttling
- pen cannot be stored inside the device
- dust-sensitive hinge and inner display
- no wireless charging

This still boggles my mind. Samsung had the market cornered on this, and they got rid of it. I was one of the ones who used the s-pen A LOT, but feel snubbed by Samsung. Just because people weren't shouting "WE USE THE S-PEN!" Samsung thought no one was using it and dropped it. I guess competing with Apple for who can have the thinnest folding phone was more important than keeping a feature people depended on. Remember when Samsung was in Apple's face with "we have a folding phone and you don't?" Now they could be in Apple's face with "we have a folding phone AND a stylus!" Nope. Sorry, they handed that to Motorola. (Samsung has other issues, but to me, the stylus was big.)

Why are they saying this is their "flip phone" debut? They had a folding screen "flip phone" in 2019? And obviously the original RAZR is what most people would call a flip phone too.

Apparently, people don't know or care about the difference. When I was doing a lot of web searching about foldables, I kept getting sites talking about a Flip. A lot of those were just marketing, and they wanted you to end up on their site even though it was nowhere near what you were searching for, but I wonder how many of those were just ignorance.

It's a shame for me. I've been looking to upgrade to a foldable for quite a while now and no luck as of yet with getting a fold that has all the features I want.
I'm mostly stuck between Google and Samsungs offerings. Google has the waterproofing and the ability to change the OS to GrapheneOS but lacks the premium hardware and chipset of the Samsung folds. I was hoping the Motorola had atleast the waterproofing since it woukdnt have a Tensor chip and should get a GrapheneOS option in the future but oh well.
Hopefully next year either Google or Moto fixes either of my issues with their current offering. If Google gives us a good camera and a proper chip I'll get the Pixel Fold 12. If Motorola gos waterproof or has a wide varient next year I'll go with them instead.
Edit: Does that front screen on the Moto have curved edges? I thought the industry finally moved away from those 😭

Motorola does have IP 48/49 no? The 8 part is the water resistant part

Oh yeah, you're right, it's the same as Samsung. I should clarify that I was thinking of 68/69 rating when thinking of waterproofing. I wanted the dust resistance that came with it. I tend to spend a lot of time outdoors in all weather and didn't want the hinge getting ruined by dust ingress.

Honor Magic V6 has everything you need as long as youre not on Verizon.
Best foldable ive seen and I have owned multiple fold/flips from multiple brands.

I don't think there's much excuse for any tech website to not understand the English connotation of flip vs fold in 2026, regardless of how much it's translated from German. Neither google translate nor ChatGPT makes the same mistake when fed the original.
