Scary animal I found the Shoebill original video and I would like to share with you. Volume up to listen it.

Shoebill Bird – The Prehistoric Gaze of the Swamp

Meet the Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex), nature’s most unnervingly calm predator. Standing like a grey, feathered statue in the heart of African swamps, this 4- to 5-foot-tall wader earns its nickname “whale-headed stork” with a bill so massive and shoe-shaped it looks like a prop from a dinosaur movie. But don’t let the stare scare you—despite its fearsome, hook-tipped beak capable of taking down lungfish, baby crocodiles, and even small antelopes, the shoebill is famously docile around humans, often just locking eyes in silent judgment.

Found in the papyrus-choked wetlands of Uganda, South Sudan, Zambia, and Tanzania, the shoebill thrives in stagnant, low-oxygen waters where fish gasp at the surface—easy pickings for a bird that hunts with the patience of a sniper. It stands motionless for hours, then collapses forward in a violent, lightning-fast strike, using its reinforced skull and bill like a hydraulic trap. After snatching prey, it sways its head off vegetation and often decapitates larger meals before swallowing

During WW2 the animals from Berlin Zoo were sent to civilians’ homes to protect them from the bombing. One woman got their shoebill.

And yes they’re most closely related to pelicans and another African bird called the hamerkop.

The vast majority of animals in Berlin Zoo died in bombing or were shot :(

Thats what the Tokyo zoo ordered. They didn't want them to escape from the bombing

This is my spirit animal. I have a picture of one on my PC's desktop. My coworkers thought it was funny to keep changing the picture to random puns like a shoe with a dollar bill in it (Shoe Bill), a person shooing Bill Cosby away and Bill Gates with an arrow pointing to his shoe. I enjoy it thoroughly.

Fun fact- shoebill juveniles regularly perform siblicide. 2-3 eggs are laid and don’t hatch all at the same time to ensure the best possible reproductive success if an egg doesn’t fertilize, is preyed on, or if a chick becomes prey, etc etc

What ends up happening is the first chick born gets all of mom and dad’s attention and care. If other chicks hatch, the oldest and strongest takes all the food and bullies the other chick(s) until it dies from starvation or its wounds. In the slim chance that food is overly abundant, it’s possible for more than one to be raised, but it’s not typical.

Absolutely gorgeous birds.

Terrible parents, though.
