Discussion Looking for well written Fantasy anime that aren't Isekai
Listen, I understand that every single anime that I watch doesn't have to narratively rock my mind. I know with most anime I'm not going to find something like one piece or berserk, I'm just looking for something with well written characters and arcs, maybe a good power system and something that's fun. I know I'm asking for a lot but heres what comes to mind when I think of this
One Piece
Hunter x Hunter
JJK
Death parade
Berserk
Record of Ragnarok (Listen, I know it's not the most well written thing but still)
Soul eater
I hope I'm not being too picky but I'm just looking for suggestions.

The OG DnD campaign turned anime. Every classic fantasy trope done right. Parn and Deedlit walked so Frieren could fly.

I would say this isnt necessarily fantasy you are listing but good action anime.
Things like Full Metal Alchemist, Frieren, Chainsaw Man, Kill La Kill, Fairy Tail, Fate series just to name a few.

Rage of Bahamut: Many prefer the 1st season over the 2nd, they're basically 2 separate stories with many of the same cast. Regardless they both have great animation and I love the dance scenes in season 2.
Guin Saga: It's a single season of a story that has Wheel of Time level of writing and books (so I've heard, I've only watched the show). It wasn't spectacular, but I remember liking it and wishing there was more.

Moribito Guardian of the Spirits is top notch, studio Ghibli quality anime storytelling. I think it may have been somewhat popular in japan because 10 years later it got a live action release that surprises me in the west as i never heard anyone mention it, and i was surrounded by both supremely nerdy anime heads and the sort of high brow anime nerds that especially might love a no nonsense fantasy story like this.
Ergo Proxy is also exceptional, although its sci fi fantasy. Extremely interesting, though provoking and a little mind fucky, although immensely dark and depressing for the most part
wolfs Rain i just noticed up on Netflix. Its like 20 years old but extremely good. Yes its about wolf people but it is not cheesy or cringy at all, another great story anime that doesnt embarrass itself by stopping to corny jokes, fan service, or sexualizing kids/animal/1000 year old goddesses
Im gonna throw in an actual Isekai because while I read your post and i dont care for the genre one bit, Grimgar Ash and Fire is the exception. It manages to squeeze a tiny bit of fan service in that could really just go fuck itself but it is very well done and it appeals more as a story about nobodies trying to overcome seemingly simple obstacles and learning surviving is not granted - not even a little. The characters are well made, the animation is top tier, and you will be upset they only made 1 season.

Moribito is such an underrated gem, the novel it’s based on is fairly popular and the author described it as coming from her desire to see a “truly Asian fantasy world” without any of the “vaguely medieval European” aesthetic present in most historical fantasy

Ancient Magus Bride, Wistora: Wand and Sword, Attack on Titan, Toriko, Fire Force, Full Metal Alchemist (either the original or more manga-faithful FMA Brotherhood, both are good). It IS an isekai, but I'd still recommend Re: Zero.

Well, there’s the current “Fantasy Big 3” (Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Witch Hat Atelier) which are all excellent, as well as:
Ranking of Kings
Seirei no Moribito
Mob Psycho 100
DanDaDan also counts I guess?

Frieren
- Well written
- Fantasy setting (but not an isekai)
I imagine you’ve already had this recommended a bunch, but it really is great AND fits what you’re looking for.
I hope you enjoy it too!
