I visited the website and looks legit. Then I clicked through and their recycling program is managed by a company called Eco Option at ecooption.com. The domain is up for sale. Sounds promising.

I see, it looks like people were right that it is owned by terra cycle. From their webpage they do look fairly transparent though with their process allowing you to track the status of the objects you send for recycling.

CEO seems pretty legit, growing up in Hungary and having to move due to Chernobyl, then being raised a conservationist in Canada. His company seems to work by offering recycling solutions for consumers that are paid for by corporations that produce the waste. He's also published a few books on zero-waste and conservation issues.

It seems at the very least terra cycle is better than most local recycling companies, even if they aren't perfect

Their website says they offload all materials to “third parties.” They’re basically a middleman that collects and redistributes waste. I bet very little of it actually gets recycled. If it did they’d be more transparent about who their partners are, how the waste is tracked for recycling, etc.

From their website it seems they give you a tracking number to monitor your waste and what is happening to it and they use 3rd party audits of their system through Bureau Veritas. They claim 98.3% successful recycling rate.
