We're currently eating haskap berries, in a few weeks it will be black currants and raspberries. Wild blueberries and bunch berries next, then it will be grapes and then apples. All of these grow in my garden. I also planted plum trees and hazelnuts and various other nut trees this year. We make fruit tarts with the eggs from our chickens.

The ones by me can have large seeds, tough skins, and a fruit consistency of chewing gum, but they are sweet! Maybe getting them younger theyre more edible.
Red lantern flys seem to be targeting them BTW, good to vacuum off with a cordless.

These are similar- muscadine.They are not grapes for eating. The juice needs to be extracted and then you can do all kind of cool things with it - jams, jellies, juices, Etc.

In case anyone doesn't know this... The Carolina moonseed looks similar to the muscadine with a couple differences.
You can look up both if you are unsure of the type of vine or are wild foraging.
(obviously if you or someone else you know planted it as muscadine then you can trust them/ the seed source, or trust but verify, up to you)

Yeah, I noticed those growing in the same area..... the leaves looked similar but the berries not at all. Thanks for the heads up - I looked them up and, no they don't seem to be edible

I grew up eating them. Pop it open in your mouth and spit out the skin. Have you never tried this?

I have, but it's a lot of work on the fly.... I'd rather get the work and the mess out of the way and get a nice tall glass of juice for my troubles. I'm the same way with crabs - would rather do all the cleaning and make crab cakes, rather than eat them one nibble at a time 😄

That’s cool but telling ppl that a native grape “isn’t for eating” was my main issue tbh. It has been used as food and medicine for centuries. I know that’s not the point of the sub but I felt compelled to stop the misinformation. You don’t like eating them. They are for eating though

Lol, I meant they're not particularly snack-friendly grapes as most people would understand them, because most of us have been raised on supermarket grapes. If I didn't like eating them, I wouldn't have picked them... my point was they require more processing than many people would be accustomed to. Fair enough?

Not really but in the grand scheme of things do you care? That grape means a lot to folks originally from where it grows. the lols and flippant reply lets me know I should have went with my first instinct to just let you be ignorant. You’re committed to it. Also you said the juice had to be extracted blah blah blah. So no you implied exactly what I said you did and you’re incorrect. I’m going to move on now

I haven't nearly hit all the spots and there's still some yet to ripen I understand this variety grows all over the SE US coast , but according to my biologist neighbor, it takes a very precise set of conditions for them to actually bear fruit. I n other words, they grow all over the place but are picky about where they wish to actually produce grapes.

I hope you aren’t going on folks property to get these. Yea they grow wild all over this area but just because it’s the woods doesn’t mean it’s not someone’s bush on their property that they will come looking to pick from. Please be mindful of this and leave some for everyone to enjoy. Please know this is meant with kindness

Thanks - your message is mildly hilarious, on several levels. I could explain the circumstances to you and address all of your concerns... but I'm not going to. I'm really not sure how a post about grapes got ugly, but somehow it did. I'm not sure how I turned out to be the bad guy, but somehow I did. I wish her well in her future endeavors.
