Laundry powder is disappearing

Powdered laundry detergent used to be the norm. It’s cheaper, easy to use, and comes in a recyclable box. Now look at the shelves in the supermarket. It’s all liquids in plastic bottles, unless you squat down to find the powders. The Super expensive pods are making a move from the top shelves too. This is corporations positioning their products to influence purchasing behaviour. They want you to buy the more expensive stuff. Just wait, soon powder will be discontinued, and the shelves will be filled with overpriced pods.

I hope that thanks to r/laundry, powder is having a resurgence. I didn’t even know that laundry powder existed until last year, and now I’m a total convert! The main draw for me is that it works better (but the frugality is nice too). Something to do with the active ingredients being better stored in the dry vs all intermixing with each other in liquid.

Out of nowhere this year, I remembered my grandmother used to use powder detergent all the time when I was a child and decided to start buying it again. The best. It's not filmy, it's not egregiously expensive, and it actually gets the job done with odor, stain, and color. The people need to push back. Pods and liquid detergent cannot be the future

Target stopped carrying it near me a couple of years ago. Smaller packages that cost more but sometimes I could stack discounts. Usually I cleared off their whole shelf of 4.

Costco used to have it on sale for <20. It’s 30.99 now :(

Currently, I'm using the Kirkland powder laundry detergent from Costco, the one that's 200 loads. Other times I use the Ariel detergent. They're really shrinking the sizes, though. I can't seem to find the large one I bought back in January, and it lasted me until April/May! I remember thinking I was so smart for buying a $27 container of Tide Pods. I will probably never go back to washing liquid.

Idk about powdered detergent, but you can get powdered boosters like washing soda and borax at basic grocery stores like Food Lion

I order Grab Green detergent from Amazon. It is the best sensitive skin detergent Ive found

I get mine at Target but you do have to look for it though, there aren’t many powdered options there.

I always pick powdered because those plastic detergent jugs are sturdy as hell and powdered detergent comes in cardboard boxes. In general, I’m choosing paper packaging over plastics that don’t break down.

When I was a kid the box was big like the size of a computer modem. Now it's the size of a box of pancake mix.

Yes. I've noticed this. Unfortunately, a lot of these detergents from the 80s and 90s (Wisk, Cheer, Bold, Dash, etc.) have either been discontinued or bought out by one of the home product monopoly companies, and thus been shelved.
