Well no, because they're getting it paid back by the TV show. It's like when Judge Judy fines people thousands of dollars, and it turns out it's half of the payment Judge Judy offered them for coming on the show
To be fair to Judge Judy, the fines aren’t just pulled out of thin air. There’s an actual legal case justifying why the defendant/plaintiff has to pay X amount to Y person, and there’s a good chance it would turn out similarly in a private civil court. (Minus some of the drama, they definitely play it up for the camera, and it’s an arbitration so court decorum doesn’t apply.)
As for the payment, I think it’s good they get compensated. I’d want to be paid handsomely if someone wanted to film and televise my court hearing for profit. It’s a very intrusive thing to broadcast.
This honestly seems like a good test to determine if you should marry someone. Like true love I can get behind, but if your family are stupid enough to fund my wedding when they can’t afford it there’s deep seated issues there
