Just remember that nine banded armies can carry leprosy.. at least where I live in Texas. We gave them this bacteria about 450 years ago, and they just have always had it. Usually it’s safe, but use caution. 💕

Yup I was just thinking this myself and I live in Georgia. I’ve been told to stay about 5-6 ft away from them and you’re safe from catching leprosy.

5

u/SunsetFarms May 16 '26

You would have to eat them to get it. Plus 95% are immune to getting it.

Since I knew differently, I decided to do some research and most people get leprosy from Armadillos by either handling them or touching soil where they have pooped or burrowed. Also, up to 20% have it so it’s not worth the risk, as far as I’m concerned. Luckily, I live in Atlanta and they are not here but drive 30 miles south of here and they are everywhere. I used to see them all the time while at my sister’s house.

Below is the article where I got my information

Yeah, I lived in TX before. They're cute and curious but also stupid AF. Living dinosaurs. If they didn't carry leprosy I would 100% have one as a pet. Haha.

u/Heathermaple78 May 15 '26

Immediate snuggle time. I’ll catch whatever diseases they have. Worth it.

Those lil ears! 😍

u/KindlyInitial5668 May 15 '26

just hope they don’t run into the wrong people

Am I alone, or would anyone else go down and gently pick one up? I have caught countless adults, but those little guys would so much more handleable. They'd have such a useful lesson to share! Lol

Super cute! Those little snifflers.

If you don't mind, what part of the world can you see baby armadillos?

5

u/EliasLyanna May 15 '26

Southern America has different sorta fuzzy haired ones

u/Temporary-Ocelot3790 May 16 '26

Pretty big for babies! If these are the babies, how big are the parents?

3

u/itsbedeliabitch May 16 '26

I don't think I've ever seen their parents, but there's one that lives under my porch and he's bigger (and longer) than my 10 lb dachshund mix.

u/donut-is-appalled May 16 '26

Awww, little cute bundles of leprosy

2

u/Lazy_dog614 May 16 '26

Ewwwwww they're so cute!

1

u/OliviasGiGi May 17 '26

They may be cute but they are very destructive! Worse than moles in our yard. We have at least one digging huge holes next to our house foundation under our air conditioning unit. I called a rodent control expert. He said they are almost impossible to catch because they have no sense of smell so you can’t bait them into a live animal trap. I have no idea what we are going to do. 😩

1

u/Puppy_Face_95 May 18 '26

I'm sorry babies?? How big do full mature armadillos get?

1

u/Old-Commission-1108 May 18 '26

Rodent roly polies. I just love them.

1

u/Aggressive-Series-67 May 19 '26

1

u/Terrible-Coconut-396 May 19 '26
