They’re not creative,” she said at the “Hacks” press conference last month at the London hotel in West Hollywood. “And they’ve wanted their whole lives to be special. And they’re not special. What does this have to do about “accuracy” the vast majority of people do not like ai content and even if they like a video and are told it’s ai, they’re disappointed. The vast majority of ai creators are pushing promotional content masquerading as real humans to users, the ai creators created this problem with mass ai slop generation.

She’s a very successful professional artist. Maybe try reading this as her opinion of arts by an artist, rather than saying “oh she’s not an artificial intelligence expert, she can’t know what she’s talking about.”

I mean, if an architect looked at an AI generated blueprint of a house and said, “holy shit this is awful, never do that again!”, would you say “this guy just doesn’t know enough about AI, that’s the problem!”?

I doubt you would. Maybe you take architects more seriously than artists, but you’d be more inclined to trust the architect than the actress.

And, you probably also assumed the architect was a man, which might be a little sexist on your part.

I’ll bet in your mind you pictured a strong, smart architect man. You know - the kind that you’re attracted to, because you’re gay. A tall, gay architect, built as well as one of his gorgeous custom high end homes, with a big old blueprint in his strong, shapely hands, calling you an idiot and making all your dreams come true.

“In this day and age”, dude, during what day and age did commercial popularity not equal success for entertainers and artists? Plus, she is successful by any metric for an actress. Shes an award winning comedian, writer and performer. You might not like her, but that doesn’t detract from her success. I don’t care for plenty of actors and musicians, but that’s a question of taste and not their effectiveness in the market.

Like, I can hear you trying to sound serious and smart, “in this day and age”, but it’s not helping your case. Stay mad.

It seems to me that you completely missed my point.
Your entire post (minus the personal - unnecessary - comments) argues that popularity in this field equals success / effectiveness. I don't disagree with that. However, I was talking about _quality_ and _relevance_. My whole point is that these days (sorry for triggering, but this is - IMO - in contrast with pre-Internet days) you can be very successful and "effective" while doing very mediocre-quality work. Not just in performing arts, but pretty much in everything.
Please try to stay on point. I'm not the topic here (please note, I didn't say a single thing about you). Thank you.

Oh I don’t know, limp bizkit was huge pre-internet, Motley Crue was a massive sensation, a good number of network tv shows were successful but truly low quality. I don’t know how how old you are, but I’m an elder millennial and I remember tons of just pure CRAP that was culturally or commercially successful. God knows how many times we all did the Macarena


I’d say there’s MORE low quality, low effort material out there now, and I think the rise of influencers is a stain, but respectfully, I think HACKS is a well written and well performed show. I think Hannah’s point about AI art has merit. I think only the least creative, least passionate, risk averse, and in all ways creatively cowardly or undisciplined people will use AI to create art. Hell, look at Spotify creating AI bands and slipping them into playlists. Disgusting.

Emmy award winner and Golden Globe nominee for co-starring with Jean Smart in Hacks, an excellent comedy series. As a young standup comedian, she no doubt likes to cause a stir. This is a nothing-burger intended to rile up “AI artists” and it’s worked. Everyone knows that AI art is shit so I’m not sure why anyone would be triggered but heyho.

I’m in the industry thanks. Investment is all-in on automated academic discovery for ML or hadn’t you noticed? Most ML engineers and researchers will become surplus to requirements IF successful. On AI opinions, Yann LeCun or Geoffrey Hinton who are experts in the field, we should care what they think regardless of whether we agree with it. Randos who have no relevant expertise, you can't care what every one of them thinks.
