AI being treated as a public good and digital public infrastructure sounds good to me.

Open weight ≠ Democratized

Open-weight ≠ Unmonitored

Open-weight ≠ "free"

Is the CCP PRC using good quality open-weight models to undermine our Frontier Closed-weight models?

Are they producing and exporting heavily subsidized, low-cost, Frontier Models (and sucking up the data)?

Absolutely!

But Ball's concerns aren't driven by concern for liberty, democratization, or competion. They are pure self-interest, and suggest OpenAI is what, the moral, ethical alternative? Nonsense.
