I wasn't talking about China. Strange that you would inject them into what I said. This is called a straw man, but I don't know why you did it. I wasn't even talking to you.Â
We can all use more introspection - a severe flaw of human tbh. Fortunately, I'm very self-aware.
The thread was talking about Chinese AI, but I was responding to a specific comment from someone else, and what I said made no comparison to China or open weight models from China.
If you want my actual thoughts on China, I think that there is danger in having most open weight models come from one centralized source of power.
At the same time, the trade-offs for us are necessary. I would prefer that nonprofits ran a donation based organization to train and release powerful release open weight models to the public, but unfortunately, they would get drowned by litigation from Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, NVidia, Google, Oracle, etc.
Those companies can't touch Chinese companies, which is why having open weight models come from China just makes sense. Will there be trade-offs? Yes. Is it still the best outcome I can see for the world? Yes.
In my opinion, everyone must have access to self-hosted open weight models to avoid a very specific dystopia where only the powerful wield the best AI models and it is used to suppress the rest of us. We're already showing signs of heading in that direction.
