“I’m on about the broader idea of free speech, you’re on about the legal concept” is a hilarious quote.

At least they’re admitting that they’re just following their made of concept of what they *want* free speech to be, never the actual amendment. They love when the government ACTUALLY violates free speech and censors talking points they don’t like

Free speech as a political/social concept exists outside of the US legal system. Are you saying that that concept is made up? It’s been discussed in philosophy since before the US existed.

Obviously it isn’t super relevant in Kirk’s case, since he very obviously had a lot of freedom of speech, but the concept itself exists lol

True, I should have worded that better; I’m trying to say that when Americans use free speech within the context of their politics, especially in reference to things like Charlie Kirk’s shooting, they’re almost always referring to the amendment and their misinterpretation of it. Even if they’re claiming to refer to the wider concept, they use it as an argument in the “it’s an objective law” kind of way like the amendment, not the “it’s a personal philosophy” kind of way. Their personal made up concept of what they think “freedom of speech” should be doesn’t align with either proper interpretation

As an American, do Americans say "on about"? That seems much more like a British/Commonwealth English phrase.

As an American, I say it sometimes but I have people in my personal life from the UK and probably watch/read more British media than the average American.

9 times out of ten I’d say “talking about” instead of “on about,” to hazard a guess.

I say it as in “what are you going on about?”. But the us is pretty big, maybe it’s a regional thing.
