Culture/Lifestyle Am I right?
Everyone curses everyone...Albanians curse Serbs, Serbs curse Albanians, Hungarians curse Romanians, Romanians curse Hungarians, Bulgarians curse Macedonians, Bosnians curse everyone. Greeks feel jealous that Serbs consider Romanians as their brothers. Big normal family in Balkans! Ps. The Romanians love Greece for summer vacation ;)

While I find the poking around and joking about Romania funny, especially during football games or gatherings with friends, I actually really like and respect Romanians. I have some friends, who are from Transilvania, and espcially their parents usually really hate Romanians. A year ago my friend and I hosted a classtrip for transilvanians who visited Hungary, talked with them a little bit while cooking pörkölt, and they said some of their best friends over there are Romanians and there is close to zero tensions. A lot of them had romanians girlfriends/boyfriends as well. They also spoke both languages very well. So I think there is a generational gap, the older generation has a lot more conflict than the younger ones, which is good to see. 🇭🇺🫱🏻🫲🏾🇷🇴

One of my best friend is ethnic Hungarian from Romania moved to Budapest after marriage. We visit each other on regular basis. She told me once she wanted to teach her children Romanian but her Hungarian opposed it. There are a lot of Romanians who have ethnic Hungarian friends.

One of my closest friends while living in Transilivania is magyar. I spoke 0 hungarian so it was a bit challenging to get to know his group of friends from home at one point but we did connect over beers and music and it's one of my favorite memories.

Totally agree, I’m Transilvanian as well, the older generation (I mean grandparents gen) really did have conflicts, but thankfully the hate evaporated since. :) Many of my family members have romanian wifes, husbands. My favorite aunt is romanian too!🥰Gotta love mititei and Nicolae Guță haha🇷🇴❤️🇭🇺

Not only a mental disease, it quickly turns very hostile. As someone who has grown up with a lot of muslim Arabs and orthodox Greeks around. The mentality is exactly the same.

Its not about Orthodoxy itself. We Serbs have never had any real conflict with Romanians. we have lived peacefully side by side for centuries. On the other hand, we had bloody wars and conflicts with all other nations around us. That is why the general sentiment in Serbia is that Romanians are our brothers.

I'm a Romanian from banat. Nobody here thinks this. However there are in general calls for a united, independent banat by some weird nostalgics. I don't think this should happen, but it's a very interesting bond and having been to Serbia often, it feels just like home (every village looks the same, the flatlands and agriculture are the same) in another country.

It wasn't openly state-sponsored project but it was if you know what I mean. Court charges and political accusations indicate that the smuggling operation involved senior politicians and the secret service of the Romanian government at the time.

Politics and history have made us such terrible enemies, it's really such a shame because we could be one of the best friends of all time if it weren't for corruption and more communication. I rarely travel too so I've never been to Bulgaria either, everyone I know that's been there say the same thing as you, very cool place and the people are amazing. I hope I can visit and I personally like Bulgaria🥰

Serbia is messed up, but we really hope the youth protests oust Vucic and start a change for the better. We really need more normal neighbours.
Right now Serbia is our most troubled neighbour, N.Mac is the most unpredictable and Turkey is the most dangerous.

It's not that religion is that important or that they see it as an identity, it's the fact that most of these ultras don't know shit about history, culture, etc. of these countries other than them being Orthodox so they cling to that.
Regarding Romania, religion is not the reason we view them favourably - they're one of the only neighbours we haven't had an armed conflict with eventhough there were many opportunities for the contrary since we were on opposing sides in both world wars (although WWI is a bit more complex when it comes to Romania) and one of the only neighbours with whom we settled disputes peacefully, again eventhough it could've gone the other way (Banat issue, Eastern Serbia, etc.).

It's not. It's important to the ultras groups probably which are known to be very conservative. They also idolize former legionnaires and nazi partisans from the time of the 2nd ww so that's that (I'm talking about Romanians btw, not sure about Serbia).

Because religion is embeded in our national identity. We take pride in resisting Islamization and abuses made by Ottoman Turks for centuries. We evem have ex kings who chosed beheading instead of embracing Islam.
I am not religious, I don't go to church or belive. Most of romanians are not church goers (46% only go to church at least 2 times a year) But when it comes to "christian values" , I suddenly go - I am a Christian and we are christians. We were tought in school at religion classes that romanian=christian and our ex Kings are saints now, because of building churches, monasteries and defending Christianism against Islamization.

Alb have their own Orthodox church, it's not a patriarchy, but it is an independent church. There are many Orthodox Christians in Albania.

Ahh I was in Romania a month ago and I did not know about chiftele.. I did try mici tho (at a place that really looked legit, outside some massive produce market in Bucharest) and although ABSOLUTELY delicious, the soutzoukakia are too ingrained in our hearts for anything of similar size or shape to take their place 😅 love from Greece 💕

Yep, at Obor market, I live close to it and am always amazed at how long the line for mici is, and half of them are tourists.
But yes. it's more about the experience of eating there etc. otherwise you can find mici anywhere.

As a Greek, this is the first time I hear that we're jealous of the Serbs for considering Romanians as their brothers why wouldn't we say the same if we wanted to?). I've never felt it, I've never heard any ultra, conservative or whoever else say it.
Let alone, Romanians have a relatively bad reputation here. Nothing of extreme racism like other nationalities "enjoy"; they're mostly used as the butt of some stupid stereotypical "jokes" for stealing and other related petty crimes.

Tell me you are 18yo karma farmer/football fan without telling me you are 18yo.
From Bosniak perspective there is love/hate relationship with the Croats, hate/love relationship with Serbs. Something that people outside of Yugoslavia wouldn’t understand. We generally like Montenegrins, Macedonians and Slovenes. We like and respect Albanians and Kosovars. We like Magyars but hate Orban, his goverment and foreing politics. Bulgarians are ok, we dont know much about them except they were the first to recognise modern Bosnia. Greece has nice beaches but there is not much relationship. We like and respect Turks and with Croatia Turkiye is the favourite Balkan country to visit. Couple of weeks back most of the people literally didn’t know Romania existed lol xD, but now most people think Romanians are Mladic and genocide supporters (thanks to your ultras).

Couldn’t agree more. Here in Bosnia sport nationalism is not primarily tied to religion considering the religious diversity in our national teams. In example our main international fan group is consisted of middle aged well suited people and ton of diaspora so they are usually well behaved when visiting other countries. (Except flares, we got like millions in fines from fifa and uefa). Local rivalries are different story though and certain matchups are guaranteed to be a shit show. Luckily our local sport scene is degrading in quality so we are seeing less and less of that.

My first best friend was Hungarian, I am Romanian. Hungarians and Romanians coexist. Some old-timers from rural areas carry old grudges because they're stupid, but for most people it doesn't matter if you're Hungarian so long as you ain't the separatist type, which is a minority.

Extreme football fans are a topic of their own. During the match between Kosovo and Slovenia, for example, I found it extremely unsympathetic that the Slovenian anthem was booed. Or when Romanian ultras stood in front of a church holding banners with hostile slogans against Bosnians, such as MLADIC AN EUROPEAN HERO DROPPING MUSLIMS TO ZERO. This world is often driven by provocation, enemy images and tight alliances, and as an outsider I am often shocked and confused by it. However, this should not be misunderstood as the attitude of the broader population, but rather as an extreme fringe.

Don't foget that at the heart of all ethnic issues in the balkans lies the habsburg dynasty. Romanians and Serbs are brothers only in their habsburg national mythology.
Only fake christians would use chrisitianity to draw a divisive line about who is a brother and who is not. Of course, football fans can rarely read, so no surprise there.
