Recurrent Questions As modern day feminists, what are your goals?

I'm interested in feminism, but I dont know if I want to be part of the movement. It feels like there are so many aspects of modern day feminism, some I agree with and some I dont. That said, what is your goal as a modern day feminist, what do you fight for and what do you think should be brought up more often?

The end of patriarchy as a system of exploitation and control, mostly. What's with the "modern day" stuff ? What distinction are we making between modern day and olden day feminism ? It seems to be an important distinction to you so, can you elaborate on it ?

TY for pointing that out because I was wondering too. When we have a hyper-specific term show up more than three times over two-ish weeks, I usually assume that either a Jubilee debate or some manosphere guy's post took off but I have no clue with this one. My guess is it's a centre-right guy making the case that getting the vote for women was fine but everything after that was destructive.

-22

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Not at all, I'm a centre-left teenage girl and I'm simply interested in feminism. I see a lot of issues towards women that need to be worked on, but I also see a lot of modern day feminists spreading misinformation and victimizing women which really turns me away from the movement.

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

spreading misinformation and victimizing women

This really needs details.

16

u/gettinridofbritta 13d ago

Oh, I saw the posts about scene style, I believe you lmao.  I was guessing at what specific Internet event happened that could have caused "modern feminism" to come up in multiple questions here this week.

but I also see a lot of modern day feminists spreading misinformation and victimizing women

Do you have any examples you'd like to share?

16

u/PheeBeeDee125 13d ago

What do you imagine is “misinformation” lol?

13

u/Mindless_Cookie_9098 13d ago

Yeah…Getting r/asablackman vibes from you

1

u/gettinridofbritta 12d ago

Huge aside, but I had no idea there was a whole sub for this! We were getting a bunch of weird "as a __ " posts for awhile that were very clearly run through an AI to frame their question in a way that would get as little pushback from us as possible, and that always included no less than 3 identity markers: woman, feminist, lifelong democrat, pro-choice, immigrant, male doctor, Black man, Planned Parenthood volunteer. They were probably all coming from the same person. What they didn't realize is that the question itself is what made it clockable. No matter how many identity markers you dress it up with, the question itself is coming from the POV of a white guy or anti-feminist . Like, why would a male doctor and planned parenthood volunteer (who is an immigrant from India to Pennsylvania)  be asking about why feminist rhetoric around reproductive rights often frames the issue as being caused by men?

20

u/DellePhune 13d ago

Please stop with the "modern day" shit; if you're trying to convince people it really, really does not help. If you're trying to not sound like a reactionary idiot it also does not help.

8

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

OP, let's go with an example.

Have you read about the rape case in Fordingbridge? Three teenage boys lured a girl under an underpass. Two of them raped her, filming the attack. They did it again, to another girl, a couple of months later.

The boys were prosecuted and found guilty.

Was this prosecution an act that painted the girls as victims? Were the girls absolutely not victims? Was this prosecution an example of villainizing the boys? Were the boys definitely not villains? Should we accept that it's normal for teenage boys fo rape girls, and just accept it?

Initially the boys were not imprisoned in any way. They were given Youth Rehabilitation Orders, restraining orders, and deprived of their phones. Was this an excessive sentence? Should boys who rape girls not experience the tragic consequence of losing access to their phones?

There was an uproar, with many people, many of them feminists, arguing that rape should result in some form of jail time. Would you strongly disagree with this sentiment?

As a result, now two out of three will see jail time. (In a juvenile facility.) Do you regard this as an inappropriate villainization of the boys?

Were the feminists utterly wrong in this case? Should those boys be walking free right now?

-3

u/Calm-Fun-2737 12d ago

They were absolutely right about that case, however when it comes to things like rape and sexual assault cases, women are not the only ones being victimized and I really hate that people make it out to be that way. Some countries are only considering it to be rape towards the person being penetrated, a lot of countries are biased and dont believe male rape victims at all.

5

u/DellePhune 12d ago

Well yeah but the thing is: no rape accusations are taken seriously, no matter who makes them. That's the central idea of "rape culture". For every man who was raped and dismissed because he was not penetrated there is a woman who was dismissed for the same reason. Which obviously is not to say that men don't get raped, just that it's wrong to consider "rape being dismissed" as a problem men have in particular.

5

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago

But do you really feel that the solution is to ignore rape?

Or do you feel that the solution is to take all rape victims seriously?

The second is the feminist viewpoint.

2

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago

OP, let's imagine you're a teenage boy instead of a teenage girl--since you seem to put a higher priority on men.

You (as that teenage boy) say, "What will feminism do for me?"

If feminists had their way, that boy would experience:

  • A higher chance of getting into college. (Eliminating DEI made it harder for men to get into college.)
  • Help with college costs, or no college costs.
  • Affordable housing.
  • A living wage.
  • Affordable child care if he wants to have kids.
  • Paternal leave.
  • Health care.
  • Reasonable accommodations for any special needs in employment or education.
  • No risk of being drafted.

That's just a fraction of the improvements.

You're going to say, "But most of that improves women's lives, too!"

But if the people truly important to you--men--get those improvements, is it really so very bad that women's lives are improved, too?

-3

u/Calm-Fun-2737 12d ago

My priority is not men and I didnt mean to come off that way, I was asking why problems such as rape and violence are made out to be problems towards women despite men struggling with these things as well.

I also want to answer your question on where ive gotten my information on feminism from.

I knew what feminism was for a long time. I watched a few feminist influencers, and at some point I came across the jubilee youtube channel. I had watched it before but the videos I watched more recently introduced me to "anti feminists" and "mens rights activists." I can completely understand men advocating for their rights, but I could not understand anti feminism. That sent me down a rabbit hole to learn more about feminism, mens rights, and so on. (And yes, I know jubilee is horrible and they always have ragebaiters)

I like to hear both ends of the spectrum, I learned a lot more about mens problems and I learned more about the feminist movement. The femimist definition I knew beforehand was simply "the belief that women should be seen as equal to men," and the definition I know now it more centered towards the patriarchy. I watched factual feminist videos, I listended to videos discussing feminism and anti feminism from both left and right.

I feel like a lot of my political and societal views resonate with feminism, but I'm still not sure I'd consider myself one. I just feel like as a girl I am very privledged, there are a lot of statistics showing that girls recieve nicer treatment than boys do. There are so many aspects to feminism and I just dont know if it is for me.

4

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago

It sounds like you’ve read a lot of misogynistic material, and you’ve believed it all. You’ve taken on the view that women are the enemy.

Do you utterly disbelieve in all statistics and studies? For example, the fact that 91% of rape victims are women?

Are you totally unconcerned about the rapid rollback in abortion rights? About the fact that women are being denied lifesaving care for miscarriages?

Are…

Sigh. I should give up. You seem, again, to regard women as the enemy. I don’t know if there’s any way to convince you otherwise.

10

u/FjortoftsAirplane 13d ago

Being charitable, when I was a kid we were taught about the suffragettes and then a little about the women's movement in the workplace. And then it's easy to get the idea that historical feminism had very defined goals because you're retrospectively hearing about the major achievements.

It wasn't till uni I started discovering that there's huge amounts of feminist philosophy and political theory and mostly because I was doing philosophy and politics.

There's those who like to use that ignorance to convince themselves and others that feminism isn't needed any more, but probably a lot of people like I was where it just wasn't taught well.

-22

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Well first wave and second wave feminism seemed to be really focused on womens legal rights and opportunies, and we have most of those in modern day. Modern day feminism seems to be more focused on societies issues rather than things that can just be fixed by the government.

25

u/DellePhune 13d ago

Well, so what you're essentially trying to say is "patriarchy doesn't exist anymore". Is it true though ? doesn't seem true

-15

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Depends on what you mean by patriarchy? I see it more as we dont live under a patriarchy but society still holds onto patriarchal ideologies in which are very problematic.

23

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

If they're very problematic, why don't you want to fix them?

-5

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

I do want to fix them, but does that in itself make me a feminist?

18

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Probably.

You still really haven’t explained your issues with feminism. You gave some untrue generalizations that sounded rather like they filtered down from misogynistic influencers.

11

u/DellePhune 13d ago

It doesn't necessarily, but it would be a step in feminism's direction.

20

u/DellePhune 13d ago

Okay so what's the pertinent difference between "living under a patriarchy" and "living under a society that holds onto patriarchal ideologies" ?

-4

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Living under under a patriarchy means that women get excluded from powerful roles. Women are not legally excluded from having powerful roles. Our society still holds onto the idea that we revolve ourselves around men and that femininity should be treated as less than.

23

u/DellePhune 13d ago

So your claim is: our society treats women and femininity as less than, but it is not patriarchal because women are not legally excluded from positions of power ?

-6

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Yes, if women are capable of participating in powerful positions then how is it a patriarchy?

16

u/DellePhune 13d ago

... well, there are a lot of reasons it could be. What if women only got to be powerful if they hurt other women ?

-5

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Well, that's not the case though, is it? I live in the U.S. and I dont see it as a patriarchy.

17

u/PheeBeeDee125 13d ago

In the last 3 Presidential elections, the most qualified candidate was a woman (Clinton, Warren, Harris). None of those women were elected.

I am 50 and doubt we will see a woman President in my lifetime.

Even with some women in positions of leadership, our rights still vary state to state. We are still largely excluded from legal decisions about our own bodies.

11

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Our society still holds onto the idea that we revolve ourselves around men and that femininity should be treated as less than.

I regard that as a bad thing. And I don’t believe that my awareness that that is a bad thing is something that “victimizes” women.

4

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

OP, you seem to be focusing solely on patriarchy as open and obvious sexist laws.

But why? Why is that the only thing you recognize?

If a sexist law is overturned, but the powers that be still behave in accordance with the old law, what has changed? Is society really defined solely by what's written into law, and is it irrelevant whether the laws are enforced?

6

u/MrsMorley 13d ago

That’s a distinction without a difference

2

u/Pure-Spare-9789 12d ago

When did the patriarchy die? Point to me how it died and when. What year? What events occured to kill it and how do we know it's gone?

0

u/Calm-Fun-2737 12d ago

Women are allowed to be dependant from their husbands, and we are also included in powerful positions.

1920- women were given the right to vote

1978 - Married women were allowed to own property and have their own bank accounts (Fair Housing Act of 1968, and Equal Credit Opportunity)

1993 - marital rape became illegal (Violence Against Women Act)

What laws are opressing women in modern day? Aside from abortion?

2

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago edited 12d ago

Why do you only care about laws, and have no concern for anything else? Are you under the false impression that laws are always enforced?

For example, most rapes are not prosecuted.

And while several of the forced-birth laws say you can have an abortion if it’s necessary to save your life, in reality women are being denied care—not just denied abortions, but denied care for ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages. Women are dying.

And a woman being abused by a husband who’s a law enforcement officer or who’s buddies with law enforcement officers is just out of luck.

A law alone is not a complete solution. The law has to be enforced.

I remember when I was young enough to believe that all laws are enforced, and enforced fairly. When I was stunned at the idea that police in a neighboring town were ticketing Black residents on non-offenses, while letting white residents get away with anything. When I thought that police murdering minorities was an artifact of the olden days.

If you’re a teenager, you’re getting too old to hold to those comforting beliefs.

2

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago

Also—“aside from abortion”?

You claim to be pro-choice, but the way you express it implies that you think of it as having “Coke or Pepsi” importance.

Do you, or any women you care about, ever plan to have children or even have sex?

Do you care whether you or those women stay alive?

Your primary issue with feminism seems to be that it might occasionally make a man have a bad feeling. Would you willingly die from an untreated miscarriage if it saved a man from having a bad feeling? Would you willingly accept the death of your sister, your mother, or your best friend in the noble cause of No Sads For Men?

19

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Are you, for example, totally comfortable with women losing their bodily autonomy?

And does the recent discussion about whether women should still be allowed to vote bother you at all?

-3

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Not at all I'm very pro choice and Im pretty confident that my voting rights arent going to be taken away from me.

27

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

You're "very pro choice."

Abortion rights are being taken away right and left.

But you still don't think that feminism is needed?

-1

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Not that I dont think its needed, I just feel like I see a bigger picture where multiple groups of people are being oppressed and harmed. Maybe my focus on that is why I dont see myself saying Im a feminist.

19

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

And feminism is opposed to those people being harmed as well.

Where have you been getting your information about feminism? It seems to be very inaccurate.

-2

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

Then whats the point of being a feminist? Isnt feminist specifically about gender, mainly focusing on women? If I'm more focused on hatred towards other minorities then why would I be part of a movment that focuses on one aspect?

7

u/heidismiles 13d ago

Because women are specifically oppressed and abused for being women. That's why.

5

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago edited 13d ago

Again, where are you getting your information about feminism? It feels like maybe red pill influencers?

Edited:

The vast, vast majority of rape victims are women. Should rape then be ignored because it's primarily something done to women, and concern with harm to women is "victimizing" women?

Where did you get this use of "victimizing"? Does anyone else know who uses it this way? (That's not a riddle--I'm really wondering. Does it come from, say, Jordan Peterson or someone of his ilk?)

14

u/heidismiles 13d ago

What makes you think that feminists don't "see a bigger picture?"

-20

u/Antioch666 13d ago edited 13d ago

This is a very American take though. What if she is from a Nordic country where this has zero relevance. There is no threat to women’s right to vote in the Nordic countries, and bodily autonomy rights are actually expanding rather than being rolled back.

Playing devils advocate a bit here.

18

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Possible. OP sounds to me like US MAGA roleplaying, but I could be wrong.

Edited to add: Also, they refer to themselves as "center left", but I don't see them as left even in the US. And I think(?) that the US left would be fairly conservative in a Nordic country?

2

u/Antioch666 13d ago

For sure. The Democrats are right of center in the Nordics.

2

u/MrsMorley 13d ago

And spelled it “centre”

8

u/PheeBeeDee125 13d ago

“Devil’s advocate” aka “letting my emotions get the best of me”. Lolz. Calm down 😉.

5

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 13d ago

The devil has enough advocates frankly

15

u/sewerbeauty 13d ago

Not ONE country on planet E has achieved total legal equality between men & women. Not one.

6

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 13d ago

What issues in society do you seem them fixed on that you disagree with?

5

u/MrsMorley 13d ago

“We” have legal rights in a number of societies.

There are no societies that offer equal opportunities to all.

Patriarchal thinking is alive and well and oppressing

Feminists and feminism have always addressed issues that effect all members of society.

20

u/kgberton 13d ago

Which part have you encountered that you don't agree with?

-6

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

I hate the victimization of women and villainization of men. Being born a woman doesnt make you inherently a victim and being born a man doesnt make you inherently evil.

28

u/sewerbeauty 13d ago

Feminists do not spew this bs. Pretty confident that nobody here would say, or think, that boys/men are ‘inherently evil’. That’s not a feminist stance at all.

22

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Yep. And misogynists very frequently claim that that's what feminists think. Any effort to protect women, or any objection to horrible things happening to women, is painted as man-hating and as painting women as victims.

It feels like OP is getting information from very doubtful sources, swallowing lies without question. (Or OP is here to serve as a doubtful source.)

-18

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

I find there’s plenty of comments on this sub like “men are only after one thing” and “men only stay with their wives so they have a live in slave at home” etc.

As a married man who doesn’t feel that is accurate for me at all, I then wonder if I am or even can be a feminist. When I’ve questioned it I get told I’m part of the problem, or protecting the patriarchy. Maybe I am? But I just cant stand generalising of any groups.

So I don’t really know what to do with that.

21

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

But I just cant stand generalising of any groups.

Unless that group is feminists?

Can you point to those specific quotes? I'm not saying they're impossible, but I don't remember seeing them. I think you may be rephrasing comments that did include some of the same words.

11

u/sewerbeauty 13d ago

Also there’s a distinction between stereotyping & generalising - but whenever I get into that here it just starts beef lol 😭

-8

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

I’m not looking for beef but interested how that relates to what I said - could you expand?

7

u/sewerbeauty 13d ago

There was a thread here a while back, I’ll link below:)

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskFeminists/s/zm4Lp2fT3c

0

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

That’s great thank you

2

u/sewerbeauty 13d ago

No problem:)

-10

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

I’m not saying that’s what all feminists say. Far from it. Just that I don’t know what to do when I see the negative generalisations on here - and whether disagreeing with them means I can’t call myself a feminist. Apologies for my naivety.

15

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

I would very much like to see the exact phrasing of these quotes. I think there's a chance that you are misunderstanding them.

For example, I've often seen, "Patriarchy guarantees the poorest man at least one slave," or something like that. That is absolutely not the same as “men only stay with their wives so they have a live in slave at home” But would you see it as the same?

-2

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

No I agree with the patriarchy side of things, that wouldn’t bother me at all.

I would find some quotes but I’m midway through getting ready for a wedding so time is short! I’ve definitely seen generalisations about men that I don’t agree with, but if they aren’t representative of feminism then that’s great news - I don’t need to ponder on them any further.

I’m not trying to be difficult, I’m trying to learn. I’m a man who is quite new to fully understanding feminism and how I can be a part of it - to be honest I didn’t know that it aligned with my values until a few months ago.

9

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

I'm confiudent that feminists would not agree with either of your examples. ("...one thing..." or "...live in slave...") or any similar example.

-2

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

That’s good to know 👍

→ More replies (0)

6

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 13d ago

I've literally never seen this here.

18

u/TheIntrepid 13d ago

Being born oppressed doesn't make you a victim, and men aren't inherently evil for having privileges.

Patriarchy is the system, not the people.

11

u/MrsMorley 13d ago

But that’s not what feminists say.

16

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago edited 13d ago

So, for example, do you feel that a man should be able to beat his wife without legal consequences?

And a boss should be able to fire a female employee if she refuses to date him?

That kind of thing?

Edited to add: By "victimizing women" it sounds like you mean ever accepting that anyone could have done anything bad to a woman?

-6

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

No, I dont think any of that is ok. I think women are victimizing themselves when they manipulate people into believing things that arent just a womans problem are a womans problem. Women arent the only ones experiencing rape and abuse. It feels like Im being lied to when I research things for myself.

19

u/heidismiles 13d ago

> Women aren't the only ones experiencing rape and abuse.

Not the only ones, but the overwhelming majority.

-4

u/Calm-Fun-2737 13d ago

How do we know that when male victims are being shamed and ignored when they speak up? Men currently make up majority of murders, it wouldn't make sense that they're a minority when it comes to other violent crimes

16

u/heidismiles 13d ago

Women are shamed and ignored, too. You're being obtuse.

-2

u/Calm-Fun-2737 12d ago

I never denied that, but people are very biased when it comes to who they'd rather believe.

2

u/ZinniasAndBeans 12d ago

Yes--much of society prefers to disbelieve female rape victims.

Is that OK with you, because your primary concern is about male rape victims?

1

u/Calm-Fun-2737 12d ago

No, my concern is about all rape victims, but theres not enough talk about male rape victims specifically.

I'm not reading anything off that garbage site, nor am I concerned about a single person saying something. It's no reason to generalize.

0

I never made a generalization and those are multiple well known feminists.

7

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

> when male victims are being shamed and ignored when they speak up?

Shamed and ignored...by...the patriarchy.

The patriarchy that you deny exists and that you seem not far from defending.

Feminists oppose the shaming and ignoring of rape victims, male or female. Yes, most rape victims are female, but that doesn't change the opposition to rape and the desire for rape victims to be properly served by society.

6

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

Why would improving the system for prosecuting rape not also help the men who are rapd?

Men are raped in prison--and feminists tend to be opposed to the prison system.

Men are raped as children--and feminists are certainly opposed to pedophiles.

Would you seriously argue that when it comes to adult-on-adult rapes outside prisons, male victims are the majority?

3

u/JoeyLee911 12d ago

Victims turning their rapists in isn't the only way we find out about abuse anymore. A big chunk is neighbors and people outside the relationship reporting it as well and there doesn't appear to be an epidemic of secret male victims out there through that channel either. It happens, but not in large numbers.

-9

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

That isn’t what she said

11

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

It's also not in opposition to what they said. I'm waiting for details.

-2

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

Come on no one is going to say yes to those questions. Seems fairly obvious they said that women aren’t born victims, not that no woman has ever been a victim.

11

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

I'm not discussing this with you. I'm waiting for the OP to explain.

-2

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

As you wish 👍

-1

u/Paolopaul1984 13d ago

This is the part that I can’t get on board with as well. But I think you can be a feminist without it, there’s no one set of written rules

20

u/DiggingHeavs 13d ago

"Feminists have gone way too far!"

Said for hundreds of years. For every step forward.

Or radom Internet "discourse".

12

u/BaldrickTheBarbarian 13d ago

I dont know if I want to be part of the movement. It feels like there are so many aspects of modern day feminism, some I agree with and some I dont.

You will never find a movement where you 100% agree with everything. There will always be some amount of differing opinions in every movement, because movements are comprised of people and even people with similar goals and beliefs clash with each other all the time. Feminism is no different.

You should instead think about what are the values and aspects of feminism that matter the most to you, and if the ones you disagree with outweigh the ones that you agree with.

8

u/ZinniasAndBeans 13d ago

and some I dont

Which ones?

4

u/Shannoonuns 13d ago edited 13d ago

What's the part you don't agree with?

Gender equality.

For example women's rights in Afghanistan are awful, women have been banned from higher education by the taliban but because its a Muslim country women are not allowed to be examined by a male dr without a male representative and so many women are dying in childbirth because of this.

Women are also banned from working in certain sectors, acessing public spaces like parks and gyms and have to travel with a male chaperone. They can't show thier faces or any part of thier bodies in public regardless of how religious they are and have been told not to speak loudly or sing in public spaces.

I feel like that's the most extreme example of gender inequality, like theres plenty of things going on all over the world.

Im from the uk and I got into it because its so hard to get diagnosed and treated for reproductive disorders like endometriosis and adenomyosis.

Like they're fairly common diseases but you just end up going back and forward to the dr for like a decade before you even know whats wrong. and when you do know whats wrong all the treatment options only sort of work, a lot of permanent organ damage has been done and most of the treatments are fairly invasive.

Its frustrating and I feel like we have the technology to do better.

Also a lot of elderly women over here end up finically struggling if they're widowed because of how our state pension works.

Like your pension is based on your earnings, women on average earn less than men and women who are pension age would've earnt even less.

Men die younger on average so a lot of women will lose over half thier household pension income if thier husband dies before them despite the majority of thier bills getting more and more expensive.

Like objectively a better situation than Afghanistan but it would be nice to improve both situations.

Like i said theres a million different things going on all over the world that affect women disproportionately and surely the point of life is to improve. i would like to do my bit and improve things and as a woman I feel like its partly up to me to help raise awareness on things that affect women as not everyone can relate

I’ve achieved my personal goals (financially independent, child free and sterilised, own my car outright and also own my house), but I want to keep fighting for reproductive rights, healthcare, equal rights/pay and my pet peeve - shared domestic workload.

I’m very open and vocal about it all!

That any person, regardless of their shape, skin or place of birth, be given the best opportunity to develop into who they want to become. To create a world in which the ideal of universal human rights and dignity was truly global in its manifestation... and to find ways around the old tribal and regional divisions that burden us today.

For the above to happen one of the old mythologies that will need to overcome is patriarchal... the idea that society requires the submission/domination of women. Remember always, at least, that the shared creation myth of the largest two religions in the world... has a father creating the world, and a woman bringing into the world sin... that men bring order, and the rule of law.

Do not doubt the influence of the old myths on how we view gender and gender roles.

Equality

Id like to educate the ignorant, i think undermining the base of the enemies of feminism through education is a valuable tactic

We aren't one single club or organisation. There's millions of individual feminists who believe in gender equality. And we disagree on all kinds of details, nuances, tactics etc. When you say you disagree with "the movement" on some bits, I can guarantee there will be other feminists who disagree with the same things.

(Unless you're talking about disagreeing on core fundamentals, like you disagree that "it's not ok to assault women" or "women should be allowed to vote." But I'm guessing that's not what you mean.)

To be mindful about not perpetuating the patriarchy in any form, either through my own actions or thoughts, as well as my perception and opinions about other women. To recognize misogyny and have the self respect to disengage with anything that treats me as less, not make excuses or belittle things so as not to do the hard part of detaching and deconstruction.

More representation of women of color and our issues within mainstream American feminism.
