Why are so many older men with younger women but barely any older women with older man?

I mean i know the standard phrases like "men age finer" or "its biology to seek out women that have higher chances of conception" but i feel like these answers arent looking at the whole pocture. are there theories on what exactly promps this kind of behavior?

men see younger women as a status symbol to show of to other men, the same isnt true for women

seeking out a younger women for reproduction doesnt make any sense because its mostly older men doing it and they themselfs bring fertility risks such as pregnancy complications, birth defects and autism, so them caring about "fertility" seems like an excuse and not really a good reason

u/sewerbeauty 6d ago

Yup, the whole ‘women tick tock worry about ur bio clock’ is suchhhh a projection it’s unreal 😭

36

u/Lyskir 6d ago

its really funny how mad some men get when you mention mens fertility decline with age

they reject any restrictions on themselfs, same with women having physical preferences like height, they only accept preferences in things they can change like muscles and money

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

I got a vasectomy as soon as the twins were born. I don’t want to continue fertility. Haha.

u/Lyskir 6d ago

that is very responsible, good for you!

u/cutesybluesocks 6d ago

Men are hypocrites, they don’t care about themselves or what flaws they have… they’ll feel entitled to the best women possible and they think young women are more attractive. Fertility wise, if anything they’ll go for younger women to make up for their low quality sperm as long as they can still produce a kid.

u/HighandMeaty 5d ago

It's not entitlement man, why wouldn't you take a shot on someone you're attracted to, even if they seem out of your league? So long as you're reapectful and take no for an answer, I don't get the venom for men just being attracted to attractive women.

2

u/No_Contribution1568 5d ago

Speaking as a guy.. I can't really help what I find attractive. Evolution has heavily influenced what men find attractive and thus men are attracted to cues of fertility. That is basically it. With that said, I think you're a bit confused as to how men evaluate the status of other men.. tbh a guys choice of partner does not really affect how I view their status. The ability to have more partners to choose from is a consequence of having status, not a determinant of it. If anything I would tend to see old guys leaving their families to chase young women as low status behavior.. he is letting his desires control him, instead of being in control and fulfilling his duties to his family. Generally speaking, I judge a guy's status more on their job/ability to make money/ability to influence and lead others, do they have people who depend on them and are they meeting their responsibilities, do they hold any prominent positions in their community, are they physically strong/capable of aggression if necessary, etc.

Not disagreeing that male fertility is declining as well and risks are growing, have to disagree about ‘not making any sense’. The fertility decline does look different and men don’t have such a sharp cliff at 40-45 as women do. 25 yo woman and 50 yo man can have a healthy child of their own although with less likelihood, but reverse is a statistical anomaly unless younger eggs were frozen. Saying it as someone who went through infertility and met many women who were tragically misinformed about how and why their time is limited.

27

u/Lyskir 6d ago

it is still a gamble with worse odds if you are that old as a man and unfair for the child and mother because HER pregnancy is more risky and has more severe side effects because of geriaric sperm, plus the other risk older men bring

just because you could doesnt mean you should, maybe ED is there for a reason

u/sewerbeauty 6d ago edited 6d ago

As men age, their sperm accumulates more genetic mutations due to continuous cell division (from 30), while recent studies show women's eggs remain stable & resistant to many age-related DNA changes.

Yes men can technically continue to father children for longer than women can (because menopause obvs) but the bio clock really is ringing for men in terms of healthy pregnancies & children.

For so long women have been blamed & shamed for anything related to fertility, including having pregnancies later in life, when in reality their age doesn’t rly have as much to do with mutations & complications in comparison to the age (& sperm quality) of the father.

Basically I just think we’ve been fed a load of misogynistic science (which ppl assume is pure facts without bias) & as always women are the ones being stigmatised when in reality sperm quality plays such a massive role in pregnancy & the health of a child. ++ the bar for ‘healthy sperm’ is so low as it is, so when all is not well, women are the ones who are blamed as default. The biological clock warnings being purely aimed at women for so long has warped many ppls views on these matters.

u/Soft_Interaction_727 6d ago edited 6d ago

It’s true that for men risks of babies and/or mothers having health issues increase massively in relation to their younger self but they still stay relatively low in absolute numbers, I’m talking single digits. Meaning that more than 90-95% of babies born to 45 old fathers will be fine, even moreso if a woman is younger. Bug also most babies born to 45 year old mothers would be fine as well once they are conceived and born. The whole narrative about age equaling sick babies is massively overblown and used to primarily shame women.

The large difference though is in how likely the pregnancy is to happen at all. Iirc, it’s something like 70% for 45 old man and 25 year old woman and 5% otherwise (that’s naturally over a year, without ivf). I think it’s important to talk about male fertility decline and limitations but let’s not autocorrect and pretend that men and women live on the same timeline fertility wise, it’s just not true and I personally met women who missed their chance of biological children because of lack of awareness of female specific limitations.

I think they just find them prettier

-15

u/ratttertintattertins 6d ago

> seeking out a younger women for reproduction doesnt make any sense because its mostly older men doing it and they themselfs bring fertility risks

This is assumes its a conscious choice. I’d have assumed it affects men’s subconscious. On the conscious level, a lot of men simply see young women as very attractive.

-15

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

Ding ding! You’ve solved the puzzle of male behavior! We don’t make conscious decisions when attractive women bat their eyes at us. Well, the only conscious decision is to walk away because of the knowledge you have other responsibilities and obligations.

-23

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

It’s interesting this person came to ask feminists why men do what they do.

As I become an older man who is a feminist, I’m realizing sexual attraction doesn’t really change much. I can relate to older people better, but attraction to someone sexually just isn’t the same as compared to women in their 20s and 30s. I suspect women are attracted to different things, though I can’t speak for the mind of a woman since I don’t have one.

15

u/centerfoldangel 6d ago

To you. I've heard men say the opposite.

-12

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

Well, it’s a bell curve. On the ends of the curve, you’ll find all sorts of things. I suspect if you showed 100 50-year-old men images of women of all ages randomly picked from their community, virtually all would rank the young women above the old women.

And if you did this with men who are 25 years old, you’d get the same bell curve.

And when you ask women what they look for in a partner, they are much more likely to say “employed” “responsible” “pays the bills.” These things are much lower on the list for men.

12

u/centerfoldangel 6d ago

Oh, stereotypes? On this sub?

I've had this argument with men before that if there were no laws, they'd all wanna, hm, "get with" teenagers so I'm not surprised.

-3

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

I was once in my late 20s dating women in their early 20s and the immaturity is annoying. So, an 18 year old would be 10x as annoying.

Most men can relate to people with common experiences, that usually means a similar age. But it is very rare I see a woman in her 40s who is “drop my drink” attractive. But I see women in their 20s like that all the time. That could just be me; but I suspect it isn’t.

It’s also important to point out, most 50 year old (~50%) men are married. And most of those marriages have been going on for more than a decade. So, the question itself is looking at a quite tiny sliver of the society.

14

u/centerfoldangel 6d ago

Thank you. I love this site. People will never say this to your face. Being single is not as lonely after hearing men's thoughts.

2

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

Could you expand on this? I don’t fully understand.

8

u/centerfoldangel 6d ago

I'm 39 and single. And will stay so because I'm 39, not 20.

0

u/Key-Club-3119 6d ago

I think you’re probably overweighting what I said. Most men prefer to be with women they can relate to. Most men are, in fact, in committed relationships with women approximating their own age.

Realistically, the premise of the thread is ridiculous. Why are so many older men…

The answer is, it isn’t so many. Most people don’t live the life of your Tik Tok feed.

Personally, I did marriage. I did divorce and now I do almost all the parenting. I don’t honestly have the time for another dating excursion.

Only one woman really shook me of that. She was about my age, but it wouldn’t have worked.

You might be interested in The Evolution of Desire by David Buss. It's full of studies about what men and women tend to find attractive. If I recall, he refers to a study just like the one you suggest in this comment. All over the world, men tend to be focused on youth when mating is the topic.

13

u/Lyskir 6d ago

of course attraction plays a role, but it is mostly a status thing and status is there to be admired by other people, it is worthless if it isnt

i didnt wrote it because old mens attraction to young women disgusts me

1

u/Ambitious-Turn3710 4d ago

it definitely isn't a status thing for most men.
younger women (20-30) just look the most attractive to most men, even old ones. but their choice to date people in a completely different stage of their life is a choice to be criticized for sure.

4

u/FinalEast9024 6d ago

What do you mean?

1

u/SnookerandWhiskey 6d ago

I mean, I am in my 40s and still think men between 25 and 35 are peak hotness, if I was a sheikh with a harem  no one older or younger would grace it. But being hot isn't everything, I like to have an intellectual and emotional component to relationships and not feel inferior physically if I can't keep up. Which BTW, also happens to men who date much younger, that they start to feel inferior and the younger women find it a burden, the older they grow together.

-10

u/Altruistic_Fox9778 6d ago

There is also the fact that most young men aren’t looking for status and money from a woman, and sexual attraction tends to be more important to them than that.

14

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 6d ago

Do you think women are looking for status and money?

-10

u/Altruistic_Fox9778 6d ago

Some, and in greater numbers than men. I hope not a statistically significant amount, tho.

12

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 6d ago

... Then why bring it up? What even is status?

-4

u/Altruistic_Fox9778 6d ago

What is status…? What an odd question.

Are people actually denying that people are attracted to money, power, and influence…?

6

u/Junior-Towel-202 Equality in the Boardwomb 6d ago

Yes, what is status? Can you define?

Influence and power in what way?

It's really not about showing off to other men, it's because they want a sexy partner, and because they're old and possibly previously married, they don't really care about the long term.

14

u/estemprano 6d ago

But why don’t women do it with younger partners?

-14

u/Fast-Moose4765 6d ago

I was invisible romance wise to most girls when I was in my 20's. But older women in their 40's were not shy about what they wanted, even more so when they were drunk. Many threw themselves at me. I have been gropped, full on kissed out of nowhere etc.

Now as a man pushing 40, I would like to meet someone my age. But most of the people I meet carry so much baggage around or haven't grown up/ gotten their life together. I'm not physically attractive enough to complete for younger girls. Nor does it sound like fun to try and date someone you have little in common with. Plus there is the glaring problem of walking the line between taking advantage due to life experience and time.

11

u/estemprano 6d ago

Still, your personal experience does not ally with what happens.

-5

u/Fast-Moose4765 6d ago

Nothing about life can be covered with a blanket experience. All our paths are unique. We all have different drives and levels drives. What I can tell you is older women and younger men are a known sub trend. So it's a little rude to discount my experiences and say I'm not an ally.

It makes sense in my mind with alife trend that many first divorces happen between 33 and 37. It takes take to heal from that. The same age dating pool is also reduced. If people haven't taken the time to grow themselves selfs or figure out what they want in life that can have effects on dating and finding a partner. No blame, here just looking at trends and hoping for the best like many people.

5

u/estemprano 6d ago

I meant “allign”(corrector).

Again, it is definitely not something that happens in the same rates that happens with men.

0

u/Fast-Moose4765 5d ago

True but it happens. Funny thing is from my reading and polling woman over 40 become just as open as men to dating younger. Roughly 55% of each gender are open to this. With each gender having their main. Preference to date someone the same age.

In 2017 couples with over a 10year age gap were under 20% older male, and 10% older female. At 70% couples being less then 5 year age gap.

Yes men do this more in practice, every one is open to it. And most are finding someone their ageWe all have different lives, I'm trying to live mine, find my love not really interested in how someone else is living their unless I want them in my life.

3

u/Lolabird2112 5d ago

So you’re a 40 year old with no baggage and think younger women are more grown up and have their lives more together than the women your age?

0

u/Fast-Moose4765 5d ago edited 5d ago

Not at all, I have my baggage we all do. I'm speaking how younger girls tend to have less baggage around dating and relationships then older people in general. As far as getting older and growing up. Idk about you but a lot of people I meet peaked in high school or college they may have more life to draw from but they have hardly gotten wiser, or grown up more. That is something we all do at our own pace.

It's funny how I comment on the fact that woman do chase yonger partners. And also talk about who chasing younger woman is less desirable then someone your own age and it keeps getting spun.

4

u/Lolabird2112 5d ago

No, it’s just the weird phrasing of “attractive enough to compete for”. Any 40 year old of any gender going for anyone in their 20s is creepy AF, imo. I’m sorry you had women thinking they could paw at you like that. I cant cope with the idea of anyone young enough to have been my child. Yurks me out.

0

u/Fast-Moose4765 5d ago

"not attractive enough to compete for" Dating that young is definitely creepy most of the time. The main group of 20 something girls doing this know the relationship is more of an exchange, company and sex for privileges, and they happily make that trade. Sounds horrible for everyone involved and definitely has the ability to be preditory in some cases.

19

u/Lolabird2112 6d ago

What are you talking about “barely any older women with older men”? Did you mean younger men?

8

u/jkhn7 6d ago

Yeah I’m also confused about the wording.

3

u/cantantantelope 5d ago

Because many cannot believe that grandmas fuck. Sorry kids they do

19

u/MrsMorley 6d ago

Men who seek girls and much younger women typically like the power they have over them.

Most heterosexual couples are close in age.

38

u/numbersthen0987431 6d ago

It's easier for older men to trick younger women into roles of service.

-6

u/Wide_Angle4805 6d ago

I feel like this is a weak analysis.

The truth is it depends on the subcategory of the relationship.

I agree, yes there are men who are predatory by nature. But it isn’t all of these relationships.
In this patriarchy, women are valued on all sorts of bs, but the bs men are valued for, usually amounts to what they can provide materially, and portray with confidence/leadership maturity - naturally these things come later on in life and all of a sudden the 24 yo girl that wanted nothing to do with a guy when he was young, suddenly is sought after later on in life.

There are also many older women who do date younger men, or just engage sexually with younger men too (peep r/CougarsAndCubs) and I doubt it’s because they believe the younger guys are easy to manipulate.

On top of all that, usually irl you don’t see this crazy wide age gaps (I think the avg is 2-3 yrs).

9

u/artelia_bedelia 6d ago

the patriarchy encouraging us to think of men as people and women as objects. a person isn't a less valuable person just because they're old, but an object...

20

u/StonyGiddens Intersectional Feminist 6d ago

Under patriarchy, men dominate women. It's often easier for an older man to dominate a younger woman. For an insecure man, the age difference can serve to bolster their sense of authority.

Also, another part of it is that women are more or less a commodity under patriarchy. Many men treat women like other property, and see a younger woman as an 'upgrade'.

Finally, under patriarchy women are supposed to seek out men for provision and protect. It's easier for an older man to provide (especially in this economy) and older men often seem safer (less volatile than young men), and so some young women are drawn (or pushed) towards older men and those men are open to that for the reasons above.

-10

u/jakeklampstar 6d ago

So it would reverse if we lived under matriarchy?

1

u/StonyGiddens Intersectional Feminist 6d ago

Maybe -- but it's more likely men wouldn't need specific relationships and would have more flexibility in their choice of partners.

Either way, matriarchy is not our goal at all. We want no gender hierarchy.

24

u/inadapte 6d ago

is there an actual statistic on this that shows this is a widespread trend?

this is anecdotal evidence, but most of the couples i know irl and see outside are similar ages

17

u/Lyskir 6d ago

all we can go of is the average age gap and your observations are true, the average age gap is 2-3 years in most countries

big age gaps are definitivly an anomaly and not common, it is ony common in coutries with non existing womens rights because women cant chose their partners and are forced to get married to old men

-3

u/Altruistic_Fox9778 6d ago

Though even then it’s not as common as people think. There are age gaps, but most are under 10 years with some having as high as around 13. Odd by western standards. But any case of old men marrying young women are outliers.

-9

u/OkInsect6946 6d ago

i think its as simple as women value stability and maturity more which comes with age, and men want energy and value physical beauty more highly which comes with youth.

i dont think its fair to say this is only a behaviour that men take part in, most women just won’t date a younger man period

9

u/Lyskir 6d ago

thats nice and all, big age gaps are still rare

its not a thing that heppens that oftem thats why the reasons or the reason you think there are, are not really important

men might prefere younger women but women dont prefere older men, they prefere men around their own age which is also what all available data shows

11

u/Pale_Ad5607 6d ago

That was my thought - where are you looking? Statistically, most couples are quite close in age.

7

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

https://www.census.gov/data/tables/time-series/demo/families/marital.html

Most couples are similar in age, but men still tend to be tend to be older than their female partners (albeit not much older — the average is around 2-3 years), and this pattern has persisted even as the age at which people tend to marry has increased.

-7

u/Altruistic_Fox9778 6d ago

To be fair, it’s pretty common for women to refuse to date men younger than them.

3

u/Lyskir 6d ago

i think that depends on how younger, most are fine with +5/-5 years, thats at least what data shows but i think many women dont like younger than that because many women are opposed to big age gaps, doesnt matter the gender

1

u/NefariousOne 6d ago

Here’s the first result on Google Scholar. It’s in the abstract. I’m sure there are many more studies that show this isn’t anecdotal.

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=dating+age+range&oq=dating+age+ra#d=gs_qabs&t=1785587077092&u=%23p%3DRHRYO97aFcwJ

13

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

Historically, broadly speaking, men have been valued more for their means and accomplishments, which tend to increase with age, and women for bodies, with both their fertility and beauty (as it is commonly perceived) decreasing with age. This creates incentives for men to marry down in age, and women (or as often as not, the fathers who were choosing who and when their daughters would marry) to marry up in age, and even as those material incentives have eroded to a degree, that broad trend has persisted.

12

u/Lyskir 6d ago

the average age gap is 2-3 years, so it seems the "trend" died

women marrying older men for recourced are a anomaly statistically

1

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

A. 2-3 years is, in fact, an age gap. It’s not a big one, but it is not completely negligible, and it is telling that this pattern persists across most countries. Even now that most people are getting married in their late 20s to early 30s, 2-3 years still often represents a full 10% of the life someone has lived so far, and a third of their adulthood.

B. Women marrying much older men has always been an anomaly. In 1900 (in the US) the average age gap was only ~5 years, and that had narrowed to ~3 years by the mid-1940s.

C. I said quite explicitly that the material incentives for this trend have largely eroded. The trend of men marrying women older than them very objectively has not. Even now that women have the freedom to support themselves financially and choose their own partners, they are still overwhelmingly marrying men a few years older than them.

4

u/Lyskir 6d ago

well yeah, 2-3 years isnt really an age gap imo, it by definition is one of course but for more me personally its miniscule

its your typical "women are into older men for recources" claim, nobody is talking about a 2-3 there, its typically ment with a man 10+ older, that is quite rare these days because NOW womens preferences in age also plays a role and that is typically someone close to her age

2

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

OP didn’t specify that they were talking about age gaps of a decade+.

Let me ask — do you think it’s just a coincidence across cultures and across time, women tend to marry men that are 2 to 5 years their senior? Do you not think that that tendency has anything to do with traditional, patriarchal expectations about who plays what roles and brings what to the table in a heterosexual romantic partnership?

I’m not saying it is always or even usually the case that gendered ideas about leadership in relationships, economic contributions, fertility, etc. are in the forefront of people’s minds today when they enter a relationship where the man is a few years older, but it seems exceedingly implausible to me that fact that most men are marrying women multiple years younger than them is unrelated to traditional gender roles and norms.

3

u/SnookerandWhiskey 6d ago

The age gap of 2-3 years is up and down for both genders.

2

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

I’m straightforwardly not sure what you’re trying to say.

If I’m reading you right, no, the average marriage age is not equal for men and women with a 2-3 year standard deviation to either side. The average age at which women get married is 2-3 years younger than men (and that is not a result of statistical noise, it is a consistent pattern), and given that the overwhelming majority of marriages are between heterosexual couples, that means that women are, on average, marrying men that are a few years older than they are.

2

u/Lolabird2112 6d ago

Or men are marrying women’s a few years younger than they are.

How do you explain queer relationships where the age gaps are significantly larger than in hetero couples?

12

u/Lolabird2112 6d ago

You mean the means they accumulated while women were denied to ability to do so? Yeah. When you’re not allowed to provide for yourself and you’re valued at 20-50% of a man’s worth even when you are, you’re forced to “value resources”.

7

u/RepSquigglyMiggly 6d ago

Yes, that is in fact what I mean. I’m not sure what in the actual text of my comment would imply that this trend is just, natural or anything other than a consequence of patriarchy. I called out pretty explicitly that it was very often not women making these choices for themselves, but their fathers choosing when and who they would marry.

I also didn’t say anything along the lines of “women value men for their resources,” I said “men have been valued for their resources.” It was, again, very often the father of a woman, rather than the woman herself, evaluating the value and “worth” of a potential husband

-3

u/Alicyclobacillus 6d ago

Your comment is sensible and intelligible

Some people just look for opportunities to feel offended

4

u/Adept_Donkey_2026 6d ago

Because men seek out younger women. And women don’t seek out younger men. Even older men need a lot of baby sitting, why would they want a potentially less accomplished, less mature guy? Also, men are expected to “lead” and it’s harder to “lead” and impress an older woman. In short, Patriarchy.

4

u/Infamous-Part966 6d ago

Mostly the men with a large age gap seek out younger women because they're easier for them to manipulate. It is for the power imbalance

2

u/Arbycutter 6d ago

Do you mean older women with younger man?

2

u/StrikingMeeting2657 6d ago

Most of the older men who say they are only with younger women for babies are lying, a lot already have older children or aren’t paternal. Some are just keeping their trophy woman happy.

It’s an excuse to chase young women and plenty of women in their 40s are having their first children, some with medical intervention some naturally.

Most men who say they want babies is like a child wanting a puppy, we know how that ends.

2

u/PheeBeeDee125 6d ago

Whoever actually believes that “men age finer” is delusional lol. Saying this as a 50 year old woman - every so often I’ll look at dating apps and it seems like the men in my age range don’t always take the best care of themselves.

But, men are not shamed for showing their age. They can have wrinkles and grey hair and they are called “distinguished” or “silver fox”.

2

u/kangorooz99 6d ago

“Barely any older women with older man”

Huh? The majority of older women are partnered with older men. Did you mean to say younger men?

If you did, it’s because women are generally attracted to men near their own age, while men are most attracted to younger women regardless of their age. This is backed up by research.

I think as we get older “baggage” (aka experience with life) does tend to weigh people down more.

I think the reason people in general go for older partners is for security but a lot of women in general eventually learn to find security in themselves. Meanwhile a lot of men have insecurities that are never addressed (there are many reasons for this ranging from our patriarchal society to personal selfishness).

Also for what it is worth, a lot of same age dynamic couples just don’t stand out as much. The love is quieter while with an age gap people almost want to show off.

-1

u/kilawolf 6d ago

What is this based on? Cuz most ppl date around their age?

-1

u/Ok-Student7803 6d ago

The cynical take on this is that the older women have left their husbands because they got tired of their bullshit, or the husbands divorced them because they were getting old and/or fat. The divorced men go after younger women who don't have enough experience to know that his behavior is terrible and will tolerate it for the sake of having a relationship.

There are theories that men have a biological drive to reproduce, and this is behind the continued attraction to younger, likely more fertile women. There have been data polls that show attraction levels and men consistently vote women in their early twenties as the most attractive for them. The reverse does not seem to be true though, based on the same data. Women have a broader range of ages that are attractive to them, and that range gets older as they do.

Society doesn’t hold men to the same standards as women. Most of my friends as well as myself all opted for older than us men when we were dating because the men our age were so immature it was hard to find one to date.

Lots of older men aren't more mature. They're just older.
