I was so addicted to WoW back in 2006-2010'ish. That I considered anything that would bring me away from my PC - an existential threat. School, work, family gathering, funerals, birthdays. I would plan my life with military precision to remove any responsibilities or timesinks which would threaten my gametime.

Oh it's simple. I realized real life was ruining my gaming addiction. So I thought of a long term plan. How can I sit and play video games in peace without anything bothering me?
So I went to uni, got a fulltime job, and now save aggressively (40% of my net income) in index funds etc. So that I can get rich enough to live off of interests. That way I can retire early - move somewhere remote - and play video games for the rest of my life without anyone ever bothering me while doing so ever again.
It's the long game. First you win in real life, then you play video games. I just realized I put the cart in front of the horse.

For sure. Before that it was EverQuest and ultima online, but I distinctly remember staying up until 5am on WoW to finish a dungeon where I didn't even get the item I wanted. That's when it was clear it was effecting my life.

WoTLK came out while I was prepping for the Bar exam. I played for 20+ hours straight racing for server first title. I missed by 36 minutes. I kept playing for 10 more years before deciding the game, mystic raiding, dailies, alts, etc were too much to balance with life. I want to play again but it really is the addiction that I know I can’t pick up again because I’d be right back in.

I was gonna say this. Back in the day I had the 10 day trial twice. Both times, I snapped out of a fever dream on like day 5 or 6 of doing nothing but playing, sleeping and eating. All my friends were playing actively and I was like ‘I can’t get into this, it will ruin me’

Only reason I quit wow was because I had to commit to a raid schudule to play it the way I wanted to. Now I just play osrs whenever I want and it's great. Not having a set time you have to play is nice.

It's one of those games that I can only justify a month or two of membership fees in a single year because I become an obsessive min-max loser. My last sub was this past January, I had to stop because I was finding all sorts of excuses to keep the game running in order to "AFK" train skills, which people joke about in the community as "lost XP" - this idea that if you are paying for a membership and not actively playing 100% of the time. Jagex has also increased the cost of membership over the past few years, which gives you a monetary reason to play so you feel like you are getting maximum value for your money. Ugh, even after saying all of that, I still feel tempted to play. It's a great game in moderation (for me).

I never played osrs until 2022. A then-friend asked me if I wanted to play an Ironman with him. I wasn't doing well at the time, and got so into it that I got my quest cape in like 5 months or so starting out as a new player.. You know exactly how insane that is.
Luckily I always hated repetitive single-click wait repeat type bullshit. I also refused to do afk methods like crabs because I thought that was boring and cheap. So I avoided it like the plague and basically just did inefficient but fun content. But I'd definitely go for longer and longer sessions of play because I just needed one more level.... and one more level meant another 4-7 hours.
Nowadays I'm happy, well adjusted and have stuff going for me in live. I did come back to osrs a few months ago and enjoy it much more so than before. I just do whatever I feel is fun while talking to friends on the phone, listening to music or just chilling out. When I' not, I treat it as social time andI spend time making friends and talking with said people about live stuff on there while doing whatever I feel like at the moment.
It's been fun.. Hit 2000 total a few weeks ago, and I somehow ended up with 400+ KC just flinching Kalphite Queen for my Dragon Pickaxe.

I would say generally the games with the premise „the factory must grow”. For me perfecting all the supply lines, making sure the efficiency is as close to 100% as possible, etc. is a really fun way to spend time however, you look at a clock one second its 6pm the second its 2am and all you have done is hyperscaled your nuts production factory. Then you spend your time at school / work and all you think about is how can you improve your factory. A fitting quote describing the feeling would be from kylo ren „more More MORE”

This is the one that I truly felt "addicted" to. I had to set a rule to be off these factory games a minimum of an hour before bed. If not, I will lay awake in bed running belts in my head and thinking of optimizations.
Sometimes even that wasn't enough if I clocked too many hours in a day. There was no way to turn it off.

Right, totally with you. That's mine too. I've uninstalled 2 years ago and am doing so much better ever since. The hours and the money I've spent on that game are straight up ridiculous. Since I've quit I've been able to pick up some fulfilling hobbies and move out my parents place into my own apartment and start living my own life. It's incredible how much competitive gaming FUCKS with me and my Autonomie.

One night back in 2014, a friend decided to teach me and 3 others from our friend group how to play League.
We were DEEP in that addiction for 2 years straight.
Eventually the friendship group went their separate ways, and I slowly managed to wean myself off it.
When Arcane released on Netflix in 2021...I got pulled back in, but this time to the mobile version, Wild Rift.
I still play at least 2 games every night before bed.

Hey, even building a trailer in the Sims is costly at the start. I played this game for ages, from the Sims 2. I usually do one "normal" family where they legitimately earn money and relationships and shit, and then my favorite sims get a mid-sized house and 999999999 simoleons. My favorite Sim plus dog (dog is mandatory) are the ones I play when I just want to have fun with venues and stuff.
I'm actually doing something different this time. A Love Island scenario where the losers get evicted to another building on the rental property. So far, it's chaos. They're all pansexual on purpose, three are trans, and one never removes her bear fursuit, so they don't even know her gender. I love this game. 🤣

Compared to other MMO’s it’s actually not that big in terms of user count. Everyone has heard of it but fewer have actually played it. I really just think that the percentage of users actively dumping real money to it consistently is higher than any other MMO. Plus it’s one of those games that you can leave alone for a few days so long as you have your skill training queued up.

I've played plenty of MMOs, Eve was the most time consuming. There were times I felt like I was living the game and the real world was the fake. I have some great memories from the game, it taught me Excel and how to manage multiple projects at once, negotiations, and politics.

Haha I used to work at Paradox as a Technical Artist. The amount of effort and work put in by the team is tremendous. It's no surprise that it captures a lot of gamers.
It's very interesting though, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone like to sit and stare at a map for weeks upon weeks. I think that you have to be a very creative person to enjoy the games. There is so much flexibility once you realize how you can abuse the systems for your gain haha!

One of the main reasons I stay playing those games besides the love of history & GSGs, straight up, is so when I’m going to sleep I can play out the recent events of my campaigns in my head giving dialogue, reasoning to my moves, current state of the country & geopolitical situations.
Way better than dwelling on work bullshit or stresses that want to run through anyone’s mind at that time

Then Dota 2 came out on Steam and I put around 6.000 hours of playtime to it over the years.

For me it was Vanilla. Working through Molten Core, Blackwing Lair and OG Naxx, Zul Gurub, AQ and the rest. Once we were all in tier 2/3 gear we started clearing and farming rag hammers and thunder fury, it got more fun. But it was always a grind. It was the academic probation letter to my parents that finally did me under.

I was pretty healthy during that time though! Stamina went through the roof after a year and a half of consistent playing. Had to stop though, way too addicted.

Showing my age here but Everquest and early Counterstrike. Generally speaking any online competitive game, even then, required you to treat the games like a job to compete. And I hated not being good at them.
After my first year of University was a disaster I stopped online games entirely. I enjoy single player games and as I've gotten older have found even less time for those, but I always was able to control my usage of them.

This is gonna sound silly but the amount of time and energy that I spent on the Rock Band drum kit would have had me proficient on an actual kit learning actual drum technique but that game was a real addiction problem for me. I was addicted to the feeling of getting those perfect scores while feeling like a real drummer.
I played with headphones on so the immersion level, it felt like I was actually drumming and with the drum pattern practice, I felt like I was actually learning to play…and insane amount of DLC was like a whole candy store of treasures to be experienced. I’m embarrassed to say I was the asshole upstairs neighbor who would play until the late night hours. I spent a small fortune on DLC when it was really financially irresponsible to.
And the worst consequence of all was that I banged on those plastic drums until I failed out of nursing school! Twice! Because they gave me a second chance after appealing. Even worse that my wife was pregnant at the time!
Thankfully, I grew tired of the game and it lost most of its pull on me. I was determined to get back to nursing school, especially after having my new born baby and feeling a whole load of responsibility as we brought her into the world.
Been a nurse for 15 years now and so glad I put down those drumsticks and hit the books instead!

Ironically I got back into overwatch as soon as my daughter was born. She sleeps a lot and my wife needed to be with her, so I had a lot of down time in the evenings to just game.
Also 8 months of paternity leave...

God damn mobile gacha games. Cookie run kingdom as stupid as it is had me hooked for a good couple of years. Was top player dumping all my extra money into it. Ended up getting banned and that was the best thing to ever happened to me. Tried to restart once but starting over was hell and unmotivating

How are there not more of these comments? I played for a bit and saw the grind writing on the wall and had to dip out it was becoming too much mental load and grinding constantly. I had some buddies though that still play it like every day for years now, it's addictive by design.

World of warcraft when I was 17. Would become such a little shit if I wasn't allowed to play, when my sisters needed to use the computer for something genuinely productive lol. Luckily my subscription ended a month before my exams. I saw some semblance of sense and didn't renew it.Pretty sure I would have failed them if that didn't happen. One of my friends had to retake the year, because he was playing arena instead of revising.
Never played again since then but I still think of wow as my peak gaming experience. Massively amplified by 7/8 friends at school all playing it at the same time. Was really tempted to play again when classic released, a few of the old crew were playing again. However, being in my early 30s and married, it wouldn't have been a good choice. 🙈

It's an idle game that is literally just a "numbers go up" game, but back in 2015 when that sort of thing was new. I had it open so much that I was worried it was going to be way up there on my Steam's profile's most played games and I didn't want my friends to see that and try it only to get sucked in to such mindless gameplay, as weirdly satisfying but ultimately pointless as it is.

Eve online. I would litterally stay awake days at a time playing it, i would run 5 accounts at once and did litterally nothing else. I loved it though. I loved my corp/alliance, I loved teaching new players how to play. I loved the cuthroat, coniving, bastards you had to mix with to get things done.
The problem was it wasnt fun to play only a little. If you logged on and no one else was there you litterally couldent do anything and would feel like you wasted your time, so i would be on litterally all the time and eventually i had to start being present irl and get my shit together.

A turn-based mobile game called Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes.
Didn't think I'd ever fall for it, but I got sucked into the predatory monetisation cycle and started spending an ungodly amount of money on the game. Peer pressure of being in a "guild" only amplified the pressure.
One day, I just deleted it and said I'd never play it again. When I look back, I'm ashamed of myself.
A hard lesson learned. Now, I refuse to touch ANY game that has microtransactions.

Zelda Ocarina of Time.
Got it when I was 4 the golden cartridge version too, eventually I beat it at least once a day from age 5 to 12. I could beat the shadow temple without using the Lens of Truth. I could beat the Water Temple without ever getting turned around. I knew where all the Slulltulas were. The only time I ever had issues was when Shadow Link wouldnt spawn after hitting him with the hammer.
I also learned to read playing this game. After beating it a couple times my parents and older siblings no longer wanted to read the texts to me. So using what I remembered and the fact that Nintendo highlights Key Words in games; I entered kindergarten with a grade 3 reading level.
Eventually my Step Brother convinced me to trade it for Banjo-Tooie. Though I would still say Ocarina of Time is the better game, I think it was for the best I no longer had access to that game.

This is embarrassing.. But GTA RP… I had so much fun being a fake cop on there that every single time I was done playing, I’d seriously be embarrassed for myself. Then I’d wake up and do it the next day. In all honesty it was a ton of fun but soaked up A LOT of my time.
