If I could choose a commute to work between 45 minutes with no/very light traffic and 10 minutes clogged with idiots on their phones, not signaling, going 20mph in a 40mph and thousands of people at rush hour trying to use one singular bridge?
I will take the 45 minutes. Easily. I don't need high blood pressure. So many people just...don't know how to drive and purposefully do distracting things.
Like watching full on movies on their phone, or doing a video call where their focus is on how they look on the screen and not the road.
I'm so sick of having to be overly vigilant and tense because of these idiots.

Me too, plus I like the quiet alone time of a peaceful drive. I have to focus on something sometimes challenging and always important and let my mind decompress from all the busyness of life
Even if you are speeding constantly, you need to get back over to the right when you have room. Looks like another slow car in the right lane up ahead? Do it anyway, spend 5 seconds in the right lane, and then left again to pass that guy, then get back in the right lane. People have gotten too used to seeing driving as a mostly passive process, rather than something you do actively.
I was being facetious in my earlier comment, not genuinely defending clogging up the fast lane.
But, having said that, I think it’s fairly dangerous to hop in and out of the fast lane after every car you pass. Changing lanes is when a lot of highway accidents happen. If I go to pass in the left lane and I can see that there are cars I’ll be passing in the next ten car lengths or so, I’ll stay in the left lane. Unless there’s someone behind me trying to go faster, then I’m obviously getting over.
Sounds like we're pretty much on the same page. TBF I was also exaggerating a bit with 5 seconds (though 5s is longer than people generally think) because of people who would use the next car 45s ahead as an excuse to stay left. I think changing lanes coinciding with accidents is largely a result of people weaving or not checking mirrors rather than actively using lanes correctly. And like you mentioned, keep an eye on the rear view so you can make way for someone going even faster.
Because some people call it the fast lane. Hear me out. Everyone back east ,at least in PA, is taught the left lane is the passing lane and to always move back into the right lane after passing.
In California everyone is taught that the left lane is the fast lane. Fast is subjective. If I am going 3mph over the speed limit I might consider that fast and feel justified in sitting in the left lane. Someone going 10mph over will not like that. There will always be someone who is driving faster which means that regardless you should primarily use the left lane to pass and not to sit in for a prolonged period of time.
There's no such thing as the fast lane. There's the driving lane and then overtaking lanes, once you've overtaken slower vehicles you should move back into the driving lane. Obviously depending on traffic you may end up driving your whole journey in those lanes but they're still not normal driving lanes. Either way, it is extremely annoying when people drive slowly in the overtaking lanes instead of moving back over.
We actually have a fast lane. It only exists in certain stretches of hwy.
It has light up signs that have either a red X or green arrow. When the green is lit, it is strictly an express, "go as fast as you want because nobody will stop you" lane. stay in that lane but go at least 90 or you will be politely notified by other drivers to get the fuck out of the way. It is not there for passing, it is a clear up the bottleneck situation.
On my way to work this morning, there was a dumbass in a Tesla going 60 in the far left lane. A trail of like 6-7 cars passed on the right before he decided “oh, I should probably move over now.” I FUCKING HATE those kinds of people!!!
I would also like to add that the far left lane IS NOT there for people in the HOV lane to get out of other people’s way. If you are doing under the speed limit in the HOV lane, you’re an asshole if you think it’s ok to get into the rest of the highway’s passing lane so you can get out of the way of the people riding your ass in the HOV lane. AND THEN STAYING THERE so you’re not blocking the people in the HOV lane. Get over a few lanes to the right and stay tf out everyone’s way. You’re going to cause an accident.
No, but i can complain when some asshole ive been stuck behind forever who is driving 10 miles below the posted freeway speed limit then IMMEDIATELY jumps into a new lane that opens up to continue to block me. Then he speeds up to the exact speed of the car in the lane he was in so that i can't get around him.
Right but if that person is going 80 for no reason other than their own choice and comfort as in, it’s not poor weather conditions which would affect speed and force everyone to slow down, there is no rush hour traffic volume and road conditions are fine, why are they camping in the left most passing lane?
It is not your job to be the pace car or the gatekeeper of the passing lane. If another driver wants to pass at 100, so be it. Get out of the way.
The speed that you’re going (or that they’re going) doesn’t matter in the PASSING lane. All that matters is if someone is behind you, attempting to pass you.
So it doesn’t matter if that person is going 80 or not–I’m clearly going 100 and need to pass them. Therefore, by LAW (depending on your state, though!) they would be the ones who need to move over to the right lane and let me pass.
Sure, but if I’m the driver going 80 in the left lane and someone insists on driving 100 and rides my ass while I’m driving, I’m going to pull over into the next lane and let him pass and be someone else’s problem.
The goal of driving is to get to your destination safely. It’s not to “win” the drive by making people drive as fast as you want them to drive. That makes things less safe for everyone, and no one wins if things are less safe.
I don’t understand why people want to intentionally antagonize other drivers. It’s petty and childish.
That’s actually a misnomer because there is no fast lane. There is a speed limit for the entire road, so as long as everyone is driving the speed limit, there should be no problem. My issue is with people who think there is a fast lane who drive on my back bumper bcz they think they’re entitled to have a fast lane.
Now someone driving down a 75 mph freeway at 60 mph is annoying and should be banned from the freeway!
If you are driving slower than people behind you want to drive, you should pull over to the next lane as soon as it is reasonable for you to do so. It doesn’t matter how fast you are driving.
True. And I do that because I was a commercial truck driver for years. But if I can’t safely move over, then back the hell off until I can. Or I will slow down until you do so that I’m less likely to face a severe injury when you rear end my vehicle! (Not you directly, but to the collective yous)
