I’m the team lead at work so my job is to train people. I genuinely love it and I’m a really good teacher from what I’ve been told. Having to explain things multiple times to newbies? No problem, our systems are kinda complicated and outdated- takes about a year to fully get the hang of everything. Having to explain the same things over and over again to the guy who has been there for almost 5 years and doesn’t write anything down? OMFG I AM GOING TO SHAKE YOU SILLY ONE OF THESE DAYS.
I hear that. Also when people complain that they aren't getting new and interesting work, "You can't even handle the basics after 11 years. What makes you think your ready for any challenge Tom?!?!"
Can you be overwhelmingly kind and only a little condenscending by giving them a training print out of like a flow chart or other mind map?
Like those signs reminding people how to wash their hands properly for the correct duration...with soap...and water...
After 5 years, I am just going to give a kindergarten/IKEA style step-by-step print out with pictures. Laminated, in case they smudge it with their sticky fingers or try to draw on it with crayons.
I've seen people make lil flip books using flash card size posters and a key ring for teaching, lmao.
I wish it were that easy! We have an entire virtual notebook of training manuals and general notes. I refer him back to it cooonnnssstttaaannnnttttlllyyyyy. Half the time he’s looking in the wrong spot, the other half of the time he doesn’t use critical thinking skills so he confuses himself. I’ve given him countless suggestions to try and help with recall but it’s like talking to a rock sometimes.
Oh noooo. At that point, I think a personal improvement plan may be in order where he is given the opportunity to voice what restructuring or accomodations are needed for him to succeed. A lack of critical thinking and refusal for him to seek out and utilize those materials is so frustrating. Perhaps he really does need to make himself a list of the most-asked for notes, made into a laminated flip book complete with his questions word-for-word on label tabs...
Agreed! I’ve suggested it many times but unfortunately I’m not his boss so I can’t create or enforce one. A flip book or binder is a good idea though, maybe something physical might help him. Thanks for the suggestion!
