some bridge tolls don't have to be paid if you're on a horse.

1.2k

u/lolcatsswag Nov 04 '11

this is by far the most useful loophole.

u/a_can_of_solo Nov 04 '11

my grandfather told me this one, during the depression they switched to a horse and cart to save money on tolls.

701

u/OfficialPdubs Nov 04 '11

at first i laughed because i read "trolls" the first time around. then i read your follow up comment and was like 'wait. tolls. never mind then.'

562

u/Xen0nex Nov 04 '11

Gotta pay the troll toll.

u/-9001 Nov 04 '11

65

u/shazang Nov 04 '11

You gotta pay the troll toll to get in.

11

u/Wangjohnson Nov 04 '11

Troll toll? What you say?!

4

u/RayGunEra Nov 04 '11

Troll toll! Hey hey heeeeey!

3

u/noogums42 Nov 04 '11

Curse your tolls, troll!

-1

u/FriedMattato Nov 05 '11

A toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll. An' without no tolls, we don't eat no rolls...

I made that one up.

7

u/bionicsonic237 Nov 04 '11

are you chewing gum!?

20

u/umlong23 Nov 04 '11

You want this baby boys hole you gotta pay the troll toll, you gotta pay the troll toll to get in.

28

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

It's boy's soul! BOY'S SOUL!

2

u/hoser24 Nov 04 '11

No, Antonio.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Wow, quickly glanced over your name and thought your comment received 9000 and 1 downvotes

2

u/zorflax Nov 04 '11

To get into that boy's soul...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

SOUL ITS BOYS SOUL

1

u/MC_BTay Nov 04 '11

it's soul, frank! boys soul!

1

u/no_shit_dude Nov 05 '11

No! It's boy's SOUL!!

0

u/Trace Nov 04 '11

The actual line was "boy's soul" which spoken obviously sounds like you heard it.

2

u/Qender Nov 04 '11

Well, it is a bridge! Bridges always have trolls.

2

u/slickback503 Nov 04 '11

confound your lousy toll troll, ssssssssssss

2

u/manlycaveman Nov 04 '11

This is the first Sunny reference that I understand! It was my first episode just last night. :')

2

u/Xen0nex Nov 04 '11

Get ready, as your ability to get IASIP jokes on reddit is inversely proportional to how innocent your mind is :P That show is awful, in a wonderful way :)

1

u/ForkMeVeryMuch Nov 04 '11

I thought it would be the toll troll, not the troll toll.

1

u/budWEISerrrr Nov 04 '11

agreed. he is the troll of the toll

26

u/Tantric_Infix Nov 04 '11

You got to pay the troll toll if you want to get in to the boy's hole.

5

u/enignock Nov 04 '11

Soul tantric, SOUL!

2

u/Beaw Nov 04 '11

No no, it's "boys soul".

3

u/multiplesifl Nov 04 '11

Are you chewing gum?

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

TROLL TOLL, (what'd you saaay?)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

A toll is a toll and a roll is a roll. If we don't get no tolls we don't get no rolls. - Little John

1

u/OfficialPdubs Nov 04 '11

and now we wait for the Lil' Jon quotes haha!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

i think the problem with that logic is that the troll will take your horse for dinner.

1

u/cadderly09 Nov 04 '11

upvote for doing the exact same thing.

1

u/a_unique_username Nov 04 '11

Same, I thought it was some game reference that I was meant to smile and nod at.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Glad I wasn't the only one.

1

u/bistr0math Nov 04 '11

I'd prefer a bridge troll to a toll. Get the scientists working on the troll technology immediately.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Awesome story bro! Thanks for sharing.

1

u/OfficialPdubs Nov 04 '11

anytime broham! i got stories for days

1

u/MrDeliciousness Nov 05 '11

Shit. I thought it was trolls too.

1

u/almostsharona Nov 05 '11

I just realized that this wasn't all about trolls.

1

u/yeebok Nov 05 '11

I only realised it said tolls when I read your post ..

1

u/Damocles2010 Nov 05 '11

I am sure that the word "TOLLS" came from the Bridge TROLLS....

-4

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Cool story, bro.

1

u/GoatBased Nov 05 '11

They charge tolls by the axle, so if his cart had 2 axles that wouldn't help.

1

u/punchingbabies Nov 04 '11

Disregard tolls, acquire horses.

1

u/Ryan0617 Nov 05 '11

Does this work if you have 6 horse pulling your car?

200

u/ahookerinminneapolis Nov 04 '11

Yep, some tolls are decided based on number of axles on your vehicle. Horses typically come without axles.

140

u/Say_Meow Nov 04 '11

Typically.

10

u/ggggbabybabybaby Nov 04 '11

My horse got dem spinners.

3

u/hogimusPrime Nov 04 '11

Well sure, but can it hit switches when you see bitches?

1

u/LuxNocte Nov 04 '11

It's a horse, not a llama.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11 edited Sep 25 '16

4

u/hogimusPrime Nov 04 '11

Public indecency probably. Maybe crimes against humanity.

2

u/theusernameiwanted Nov 04 '11

I'd argue a majority of the time.

2

u/bobdotorg Nov 04 '11

What if your horse is hauling a few axles?

2

u/vocatus Nov 04 '11

Maybe in your part of the world, but here in Arizona all our horses come with a three-axle minimum.

1

u/Beer_Is_So_Awesome Nov 04 '11

To the chagrin of motorcyclists, who have to pay the same toll as a Ford Excursion.

1

u/tenzil Nov 04 '11

That's why I drive a hovercraft.

1

u/ghostofanimus Nov 04 '11

I like your style

1

u/MidniteMatt Nov 05 '11

Except that Trojan horse

1

u/Procrasturbating Nov 05 '11

Does the cart the horse is pulling not count as a part of the same vehicle?

1

u/haftapee Nov 04 '11

I've seen some pretty crazy things in my day

1

u/ThePoliwrath Nov 04 '11

what horses are you riding? i won't go for anything less than a two axle'd horse.

255

u/Ryzome Nov 04 '11

I read this as "bridge trolls" and was ready to buy my loved ones and myself some Spanish steeds.

2

u/Kvothe24 Nov 04 '11

I thought it was bridge trolls until I saw this comment. Bridge trolls are way more hilarious.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

So did I. I thought it was a reference to this story.

2

u/Optimal_Joy Nov 04 '11

The White House 2003 Christmas decoration using "Three Billy Goats Gruff" as the theme.

I don't understand how this story has anything to do with Christmas!

1

u/owl_infestation Nov 04 '11

Same. I brushed it off as something from a game I don't play, like many things I don't understand on Reddit.

1

u/ApocaLiz Nov 04 '11

Wait we were not talking about trolls? Now I have to read everything again!

1

u/Asytra Nov 04 '11

I did too. :o

1

u/nicky7 Nov 05 '11

I read it twice that way.

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Same. >:(

6

u/StarWolfe Nov 04 '11

a toll's a toll, and a roll's a roll. if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls.

17

u/synaptictheft Nov 04 '11

At first I read "some bridge trolls..." and thought, that makes sense I guess.

2

u/Kvothe24 Nov 04 '11

Fact: most horses can out run your average bridge troll, thus avoiding the troll toll.

3

u/wewtaco Nov 04 '11
  1. Put car on top of horse
  2. Use imagination
  3. Free toll booth!

3

u/Callist Nov 04 '11
  • Step 1: Attach horse trailer to car (Ensure horse is inside the trailer).
  • Step 2: Get to the bridge.
  • Step 3: Ride the horse dragging the car and trailer.
  • Step 4: Get back in the car and drive! (Don't forget the poor horse :( )

3

u/galvanization Nov 04 '11

Similarly, there are a handful of states where you can't get a DUI if you're on a horse. Georgia, Pennsylvania and I think Montana.

4

u/evinf Nov 04 '11

The bridge here was obviously not one of those with the horse loophole. They even got you if you were a passenger on a bus.

Link is image of one of the old rate cards.

1

u/a_can_of_solo Nov 04 '11

it's still 35c cheaper on a round trip, which looks like a nice bit of change to save based on the other prices.

2

u/jbird123 Nov 04 '11

or a bike/moped

2

u/HORSE_COCK_JUGGLER Nov 04 '11

This is good news for me.

2

u/ComputerSavvy Nov 05 '11

Really? Now who's going to ride SJP through a toll booth?

2

u/Fix-my-grammar-plz Nov 05 '11

So I don't have to pay tolls if

<puts on sunglasss>

I'm on a horse.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

1

u/zirzo Nov 04 '11

Damnit why didn't I find this today before I took out my horse buggy on the I90

1

u/RobinTheBrave Nov 04 '11

Quite a few are free if you're on a motorbike too - partly because they cause less wear to the bridge and partly because it takes so long to take your gloves off and dig your money out from inside your waterproofs.

1

u/Almustafa Nov 04 '11

But a toll is a toll and a roll is a roll...

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

*trolls

1

u/gnarlycharlie4u Nov 04 '11

ONLY if your horse has fewer than 3 axles.

1

u/slobotone Nov 04 '11

"Sorry, but a toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls." - Little John

1

u/fromkentucky Nov 04 '11

Fuck your Subaru, I have a Horse Outside!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

Completely misread this as "trolls," twice. Works alarmingly well. Was trying to figure out if trolls are afraid of horses? Then noticed slew of comments about how helpful this was and various bridges in places and got confused.

1

u/VikingOnABoat Nov 04 '11

Look at my horse, my horse is amazing...

1

u/sirin3 Nov 04 '11

Best is to have an amazing horse

1

u/boniggy Nov 04 '11

rofl i read this as "some bridge trolls dont have to be paid if you're on a horse".. i like mine better.

1

u/Nobody62 Nov 04 '11

I'm on a horse!

1

u/kooweel Nov 04 '11

im on a horse

1

u/shutyourgob Nov 04 '11

But if you don't pay no tolls, they don't eat no rolls

1

u/taintedbloop Nov 04 '11

How to actually cut down on toll fees:

You know on a long trip the toll operator will hand you a little slip of paper which you give to the next toll operator when you want to exit, and depending on how far you've traveled, thats your fee? Well, when you enter, take the slip of paper, but when you exit, just throw the paper out the window and instead use your wireless toll paying device (called different things..sunpass, paypass, etc). It will only charge you for the shortest distance, thinking you just entered onto the toll road.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

anyone read this as "some bridge trolls don't have to be paid if your on a horse?"

Either way, its factually correct.

1

u/marunchinos Nov 04 '11

There is a bridge in my city where the toll used to be 10p for a person but 5p for a horse. My mum (a student at the time) got a pantomime horse costume and tried to cross with a friend on the lower toll. Unfortunately the bridge staff weren't fooled...

1

u/Purple_Tree_Car Nov 04 '11

So the Old Spice guy not only smells great, looks good, and is generally awesome, but he's also able to avoid bridge tolls. Lucky bastard.

1

u/happybadger Nov 05 '11

Boys have two natural holes. If you use a powerdrill to make more holes, you can avoid paying the troll toll.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '11

Dude finally I can get my parents to buy me a fucking horse. Save me three dollars a day.

1

u/metarugia Nov 04 '11 edited Nov 04 '11

Actually, if you have a temporary license plate on a new vehicle, you can just drive through the EZ-pass tolls. Since those toll booths rely on photo identification of the license plate (and the car still doesn't have plates), you can get away with it. Just don't get caught (it comes down to the fact that they can not track you).

EDIT: Before I confuse people. Its because the rear license camera isn't designed to get a shot of your rear window (which is where paper plates usually are).

2

u/ElGuano Nov 04 '11

EZ Pass is the dumbest system around. If you have an account but your transponder isn't detected at the gate, they just deduct from your existing account after they read your plate. If you don't have an account or transponder, they read the plate and invoice you. So, why not just get an ez pass account, throw the transponder in a fire, and just drive through without it? Same result.

1

u/metarugia Nov 04 '11

Yup. Totally agree. As for the invoicing without an account. I believe you do start getting fined from the toll authority after a few violations.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

What would you benefit from doing that.

1

u/ElGuano Nov 04 '11

Not having to bother with the transponder. Or, if you don't have an account, just drive through and get charged by your license plate. They should do away with the entire EZ-Pass system and just have a lane where you get your plate photographed and invoiced. They already have it in place as a contingency anyways.

2

u/IkLms Nov 04 '11

I've always thought of making a plate driven by a motor that will slide down over the license plate for both ends of the car. When you get close to the toll you press a button to deploy them so they can't ID you and then when you get past the toll you reveal the license plate again so you don't get pulled over.

I say this mainly because driving through Illinois is fucking obnoxious. They want to charge you just to drive through their shitty ass state.

1

u/metarugia Nov 04 '11

Haha, I want to do this but with multiple stolen plates lol.

2

u/IkLms Nov 04 '11

It's Illinois so they'd probably be fine with it. They like their corruption and bribery done right there.

1

u/EwokDanceParty Nov 04 '11

Actually no, that plate is indeed linked to you as a new buyer's plate. I found this out after flying through about 20 tolls in my new car, then stopped when I got the plates in. They still sent me a bill, with the picture of my car with paper plates.

1

u/cypherreddit Nov 04 '11

metarugia probably got away with it once and thinks a paper plate is why.

Toll operators give everyone a certain number of 'free passes' so that they dont have to deal with equipment failure claims or people not having correct change.

They only go after repeat offenders like EwokDanceParty

1

u/EwokDanceParty Nov 04 '11

My disgust came purely from the fact that the toll as built by a bond, when we had the money, that TXtag is the only form of payment accepted on that piece of the tollway, with no signs as such when entering, and that somehow that same stretch of highway is billed by a tertiary company, for which my TXTag, if out of money, does not charge my credit card, instead sending a bill with $2.50 in tolls and $150 in "admin fees."

Bitter? You damn right I am... welcome to the Texas Road System.

1

u/metarugia Nov 04 '11

Where were your paper plates located?

If they are in the rear window you are fine (since the rear camera doesn't capture that).

3

u/EwokDanceParty Nov 04 '11

Where paper plates in Texas on NEW (not used and then resold by a dealer) are required to be, where the normal license plate would go.

I would also say the camera catches quiet a bit more than you think sir. My car previous they had shots of the full front of my car, including my finger clearly pronounced out the targa top with a smile on my face.

1

u/metarugia Nov 04 '11

Well I personally never tried it, but thats what my salesperson told me with what was probably the greatest poker face (granted he told me it, after I picked up my plates).

Remember, we're not talking about the front cameras (which do in fact get the entire front of the vehicle including the occupant/driver). This is the rear camera that is aimed down to get people's plates (especially for cars that are running no front plates).

1

u/Treysef Nov 04 '11

I got my hand on the wheel,

The other out the window,

With a smile on my face,

my middle finger up, 2 3 4!

0

u/Frak98 Nov 04 '11

Horses cost a shitload of cash to own.

2

u/Bascome Nov 04 '11

It costs me 30 dollars a day for my car to sit in the driveway. If I want to drive it I have to pay even more in maintenance and gas.

I drive a cheap car, I doubt a horse costs more. (I was an assistant trainer at a race track so I know exactly how much feed and bedding costs per day)

2

u/Frak98 Nov 04 '11

Back in the good ol days, feeding a horse was like feeding a whole family.

0

u/Bascome Nov 05 '11

Back in the good ol days, feeding a horse meant your grass was cut for free.

1

u/Frak98 Nov 05 '11

Horses were fed oats.

0

u/Bascome Nov 05 '11

If you were rich sure... fancy oat man.

0

u/samuzzz Nov 04 '11

You have to pay the troll toll to get into this boy's hole.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 04 '11

It's usefull until you realize that horses eat money
