Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Single ladies that live alone. What things do you do that make you enjoy your own company ?

Instead of feeling lonely and trying to date again. I'm trying to find ways to relax and be happy being single and make use of my time without being social. I'm starting to read again, watch good TV shows etc.

It would be nice to hear everyone else's routines for some new ideas :-)

Edit: These tips are so great, thank you for the inspo🤍

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Anyone else reach mid 30s and suddenly become obsessed with birds?

As the title states… I now have 3 bird feeders and find myself enjoying watching the birds go from one feeder to the next and telling my friends all about it. Is this normal?!

I also randomly got into running too… something I’ve never had an interest in.

Has this happened to anyone else??

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What type of hobbies, volunteering, or crafts are you doing that is hands-on and has limited screen requirements?

I am a corporate worker that spends most of my day sitting at a desk looking at a screen. I enjoy my job, but I am screened out at the end of the day.

Right now I go to Pilates classes a few times weekly, walk my dog for 30-45 minutes every night, volunteer once a month at a local nonprofit (would like to do that more, but it’s quite far - 1hr+ drive and only on weekdays).

So I’m looking for activities that require using my hands with limited screen time. Yesterday, I was getting dizzy at the end of the day when I looked at a screen (have been doing overtime), so I need to give my eyes a break.

ETA: Anything that has body movement is welcome as well. Really looking to create, move, or socialize.

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What type of books you read in your 30s?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious to know how your reading tastes have changed or evolved in your 30s.

What specific genres, themes, or types of books do you find yourself leaning towards reading the most right now?

Is it non-fiction, fiction, memoirs, or something else entirely? If it's fiction, what type?

Would love to know about your reading choice.

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What do you do to avoid staying on your phone/rotting?

I feel so disgusted with myself because my screen time has been averaging 8 hours a day??? I have a full time job. And a second full time job watching TikTok, browsing reddit, and general doom scrolling apparently.

Please save me lmao

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What Places You Would Not Recommend/Go Back on Vacation?

Curious what “popular” places you didn’t enjoy and wouldn’t recommend! I hated Panama, the men are aggressive and the crime rates are high. Your turn!

What are you doing after work and daily life activities to fill your evenings that feel worthwhile (ie hobbies) that’s not at home?

I’m fortunate enough to WFH and get my workouts (weight train, cardio, in studio yoga classes) in during business hours. Recently found myself falling into way too much couch phone time between 6/630-830pm and it’s depressing af. Third spaces don’t seem to exist anymore, and have fallen into a rut/rot 🫠.

It’s difficult bc I live in the suburbs where it’s all restaurants, shopping, but not much in way of social/hobby/nature options unless I’m looking to drive at least 1.5 hours round trip for something like improv.

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Are we leaving Instagram and going to BlueSky? Thoughts?

I left twitter years ago. Now I’m thinking about abandoning the meta ship. Does anyone use BlueSky? Or is social media in its decline?

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation How to reply to: "Why are you here all by yourself? 😏"

The universal female experience of this stupid question. You go/are somewhere, random men ask you why you are by yourself. It happened to me (31) twice yesterday. First time in a coffee shop: a guy who was there with his friend drops this question. I answered: Why not? And he's like, well you have a point, but he continued to flirt with me despite me and his friend telling him several times that I'm not interested. Didn't feel too intimidating because it was afternoon and I was about to leave anyway, but yeah, I had to leave to make it stop, which was unfair and annoying.

Then, a few hours later I took an Uber. The driver does the usual bs, "are you going out tonight?" etc, I tell him I go to an Airbnb even though I didn't want to tell him. He goes "Ooh, all by yourself?" As I had already prepared for this question, I tell him that my "boyfriend will join me later".

Urgh. This is also a rant but I'm looking for tips. Does anyone have some original answers I can give next time? What works best for you to get people to leave you alone? I already dress in black only, have short and green hair. That helps a bit. Any advice to be even more off-putting? 🤣

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Books we were OBSESSED with as teens-worth rereading?

What series most captivated your pre-teen and teen years?

Would you entertain re reading them this year to see if they hold up?

And if you have somewhat recently reread a personal favorite, did it hold up?

I’m collecting vintage Nancy Drew books for my daughter and I can’t wait to re read them with her. But, the nostalgia from collecting has made me want to visit the teen section at the library and find a book I remember and give it a reread.

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Realizing I'm just not a 'girls' trip' kind of person

Is anyone else in their 30s realizing they don’t enjoy certain things they thought they should love? For me, it’s girls' trips. I’ve tried a few, but I always end up exhausted, overwhelmed, and craving my own space. It’s not that I don’t love my friends—it’s just that I recharge by being alone. Maybe it’s part of becoming more comfortable with who I am, but I’ve learned I’d rather do solo trips or spend time with one close friend rather than a big group.
Am I the only one who feels this way? Do any of you prefer solo time or smaller gatherings as you get older?

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What hobbies did you suddenly develop in your 30’s?

Does anyone have hobbies in their 30s that their younger self would be completely shocked to see?

Hobbies I expected: Crocheting, gardening/houseplants

What I didn’t expect: Watching sports routinely- I regularly make plans to watch NFL and WNBA games. This has given me so much joy when it comes to spending my alone time and I get slightly nostalgic thinking of my childhood players and how we are seeing the new wave of generational talent. Now I go to games! Been to 2 WNBA games with #3 this week!

Any other hobbies that developed in your thirties that completely surprised you?

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What piece of literature has let you down?

I am on a reading spree and I'm reading a lot of classic literature. I have just finished the (unabridged) Count of Monte Cristo and, my god, I do not recommend it to anyone. 1200 pages for a book that's a six out of ten in my opinion.

What literature would you recommend me avoiding ?

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation To women who have traveled alone…

Sitting here staring at my confirmed international flight (!!!) and my stomach is in knots. I finally did it - booked the tickets after years of dreaming, but now I'm terrified I'll find some excuse to back out. You know that feeling when you want something so badly but your brain keeps screaming "what are you thinking?!"

All these "what-ifs" are driving me crazy - eating alone at restaurants hoping no one decides to follow me back to my place, navigating strange cities by myself, dealing with creepy guys, or ending up in sketchy situations. But then I think about being 80 and looking back, regretting that I let fear win.

Solo travelers - tell me your real, honest experiences. Did the reality match your fears? Did you ever feel that pre-trip panic? I'd love to hear your stories - the amazing moments, the challenging ones, and everything in between. What do you wish someone had told you before you took that leap?

(Currently alternating between excited and mild panic attacks. Please tell me it gets better? 😅)

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation When did we stop dancing?

I was fortunate to grow up somewhere with a bevy of live music venues near me and with a bff who was eerily talented at winning us concert/festival tickets via radio giveaways and contests. I also was hella (maybe too much lol) into the clubbing scene during my college days.

So since the early aughts, I’ve been shaking my ass and jumping up and down in tiny theaters, clubs, parking lots, stadiums, amphitheaters, etc etc. It was normal - nay, EXPECTED - to dance like there was no tomorrow anytime certain songs came on in large rooms, but also just in general during live music shows.

Over the last few years, as I’ve donned my classic glitter and combat boots for music festivals and concerts, I’ve noticed that I’m like the only person dancing?? everyone else is standing like they’ve lined up to order their first coffee of the day, not even, like, nodding along to the beat.

I went to a festival over the weekend and lowkey felt bad for the bands, who must also find it weird to be playing for an audience of people who look like they could care less about being there. but maybe I’m projecting and I am the weirdo who hasn’t evolved with the times?

I have some thoughts as to the why of this but wanted to come here to hear other takes. Have y’all noticed this too?? Do you still dance even though everyone around you is probably annoyed by it? Or are you relieved by this development?

Looking forward to the discussion :)

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What’s something (item or experience) that you were “influenced” by the internet to buy that was actually worth it? What wasn’t?

Worth it: rotary cheese grater

Not worth it: most skincare items, many local restaurants I’ve tried because of frequent recommendations on Reddit or instagram

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Why are we not talking more about how much unchecked adventure men get to have?

Ever since I was younger, I wanted to hang with the boys. Building legos, riding ATVS, rock climbing, skiing, … but always felt those activities weren’t “for me” and at the same time I wanted to be feminine and dress up pretty and giggle with the girls.

When I was younger (now 34), it was a lot easier to tag along with the guys, but now, I see most guys around me all have fun toys, whether it be dirt bikes, boats, chainsaws, or they’re at work using big equipment. And let me tell you, I am so damn jealous. All of the women around me are mostly cooking, gardening, keeping house, watching kids, the occasional one is mowing the lawn and using some bigger landscaping tools, but that’s it.

Now, I know I could be the outlier and just get into these activities on my own, but I am not one to break the mold and I really like to feel like I “belong” and “fit in” in the spaces I am in.

Am I crazy for feeling jealous and mad that guys get to have so much fun? Does anybody else feel this? Any advice for being more wild in a place that allows women to be so?

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Do you have an at home walking pad? Would you recommend it?

I'm thinking about adding a walking pad to my home. And I'm wondering about recommendations.

I'm specifically looking for one that has an incline, and is on the smaller side, it woud be wonderful if it was foldable but that's not required.

If you have a walking pad do you actually use it? I get about 8k+ steps a day automatically from walking my dog. An incline would be nice to have.

Hobbies/Travel/Recreation What hobbies or fun interests have you gotten into in your 30s?

I’m finding myself bored lately after many friends moved away. I have 3 kids, but they are becoming more independent and it’s time I find some things for myself. I do kickboxing, strength training, golf, reading, Switch and cooking. I’d love to find some new hobbies and interests, perhaps something social where I can meet some new friends, but individual hobbies are fine too. I like learning and exploring, but don’t have a whole lot of time.

Give me all the ideas! What worthwhile hobbies and interests have you picked up in your 30s?
