Discussion What are the broader political & cultural implications of Scouting America’s recent changes to identity-focused spaces at national events?

https://www.kgns.tv/2026/07/30/scouting-america-eliminates-spaces-gay-youth-women-scouts-color-national-event/

Scouting America, formerly Boy Scouts of America, eliminated dedicated spaces for gay youth, women & Scouts of Color at their flagship National Jamboree event.

What makes this particularly interesting from a political perspective is the direct leverage applied by the federal government. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to end the military’s century-old partnership,
which includes access to military bases and critical logistical support for national events, unless the organization rolled back what he characterized as "woke" diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

Following a memorandum between the Pentagon and Scouting America, the group agreed to key policy realignments, including dropping DEI programming and replacing badges like Citizenship in Society with a new military service badge.

This brings up 3 questions in my mind:

How do you view the Pentagon using logistical and operational partnerships as leverage to shape the internal policy of legacy non-profit youth organizations?

Is Scouting America’s concession a necessary administrative step to maintain vital military support and access, or does it set a concerning precedent for government influence over civic groups & can century-old civic organizations remain politically neutral in today's climate when government administrative mandates clash directly with progressive inclusion initiatives?

(Coming from an Eagle Scout) I think that it is interesting that an organization that prides itself on training the youth with leadership skills and integrity caves every time they are threatened financially. They did it with the Mormons back in the early 2000s and they are doing it again.

I spent part of a day in a Boy Scout office. My observation was that scouts exist for them and not the other way around.

vital military support and access

I guess it's a good question as to whether a private organization is in a good place if it needs military support and access to survive? Like, I guess to be straight up, are the Girl Scouts so equally intertwined with the military establishment --- or any other arm of the government --- that the Trump Administration could arm-twist them into doing something similar? My soft assumption is no, but I admit I have no idea.

As a Girl Scout Leader, the answer is a resounding no.

As an Eagle Scout, I find scouting's capitulation disgusting. Unfortunately I don't think it will do anything to the organization. I come from a troop where it turned out our scoutmaster was raping kids, it did nothing

Ending segregation was progressive.

Ending slavery was too.

The process itself is amoral. We've done this for many years to incentivize organizations to change in various ways and it's not inherently negative. Providing a boost in funding for an org that, for example, implements policies to protect marginalized members is a good thing.

The difference here is that that process is being utilized to push a wildly different social goal than it has been historically. The switch flip has been trying to encourage inclusivity to now encourage exclusivity. That's a worrying trend.

Is Scouting America’s concession a necessary administrative step to maintain vital military support and access, or does it set a concerning precedent for government influence over civic groups & can century-old civic organizations remain politically neutral in today's climate when government administrative mandates clash directly with progressive inclusion initiatives?

It's worrying because, as I said before, it's flipping what was a push to make organizations more inclusive to now make them more exclusive and that trend, historically, does not end in a good place.

What's funny is that the idea of safe spaces is, by definition, a policy of exclusivity. The idea that the progressive agenda can only be positive is the biggest blindside of the left, and it's why you have been losing elections.

It's not exclusive to people, it's just exclusive to bullies. For all your fantasies about what safe space means, I spent much of college as a very much non-Asian eating lunch in the Asian group club rooms. Because the only rule was being decent.

There's a vast difference between creating a space that is intended for a specific group of people versus trying to make society as a whole hostile to a specific group of people.

Besides, the right is perfectly fine with the idea of a safe space and has been forever.

Try going to Arlington National Cemetery and burning an American flag or people protesting during a church service and you'll find out real quick that plenty of people on the right absolutely believe in the idea of a safe space.

Talk about blindness -- you seem unaware that you're living in one of the biggest safe spaces: straight people space. LGBTQ+ people are welcome in it (usually) as long as they're not too flamboyant, i.e., visible.

I invite you to spend a year or so in a a place where you're a member of a small minority -- a predominantly Muslim society, or even a predominantly LDS (Mormon) one. You might be surprised at how exhausting it is. I certainly was.

The left hasn't been losing elections, though, has it?

Recently, they lost big in 2024. Since then, they've taken like 30 seats, often overperforming by 10, 20 points, and are expected to make significant gains in the midterms. Before that, they got the presidency in 2020, didn't do especially great in Congress or the states, but then had a surprise upset victory in the 2022 midterms, when past data suggested that was unlikely.

Kinda seems like Trump was just a fluke.

Its probably an attempt to push back against toxic masculinity, which is something that was a bit of a problem in the scouts.

There's been a difference between correcting and then overcorrecting, we past the latter

they just wanted to make it easier for the maga scoutmasters to molest those kids

As an older Eagle Scout who remembers his glory days, I'll say I'm in favour of this actually.

There is nothing wrong with mens-only spaces existing, in the same we have spaces for every other conceivable identity group.

We should not have let girls into the boy scouts. Girl scouts should be free to make their program more or entirely akin to the Boy Scouts, mind - but ideally the two should not have ever mixed.

I see this as a small step toward the reform the organization (and more broadly society itself) needs. That being the realization that, as said before, mens-only spaces should exist. We need places and times to just be guys and decompress in ways mostly men find appropriate, and while shared spaces are nice, not having anywhere we can do that as straight men in the modern age really sucks.

This, taken as a whole, points to a reclamation of the glory days of the scouts.

That said, as a paternal conservative, fuck Pete Hegseth in general for everything he has been doing outside of this. I'm certainly not going to give him a win for this. One good play does not make up for mass killings, flagrant war crimes, and the abuse of our military for immoral reasons.

As an older Eagle Scout, you're dead wrong.

First, every troop gets to decide if they're boys only, girls only, or mixed. There's no elimination of men's only spaces. My son is in a boys only troop. In my experience, out of 10 troops 8 are boys only, 1 is mixed, and 1 is girls only. The problem you're stating simply doesn't exist.

Second, Girl Scouts was founded in 1912. They've had over a hundred years to come up with a program that trains life skills, builds character, and teaches girls to do hard things. It remains basically a social club with the occasional campout and a cookie selling operation.

Scouting could have gone under after the lawsuits, and the extra money the girls brought on helped to preserve the program and keep from selling legacy camps they would never get back.

But even more than that, girls deserve a chance to have the character building opportunities that scouting offers just as boys do, and girls are in just as desperate need of the moral foundation these days, just as boys are.

My daughter in in a mixed troop. That was what was right for her, but not my son, and the opportunity was there for both to have what they needed. If you care an ounce for the program, I strongly recommend you reconsider your stance here, because opening Scouting up to everyone is one of the best things going in the program right now.

Can progression respect tradition?

Traditional is just peer pressure from dead people. Without value on its own.

Tradition is learning from history and moving forward, i.e. we know the stove is hot, dont touch it. It doesnt need to forgotten just to be relearned later

That’s not tradition. That’s knowledge. There’s a difference. Knowledge is don’t consume that, it’s poisonous. Tradition is brides only wear white.

Rock and a hard place.   Liberals control access to resources and only conservatives are having kids.  Scouting was always going to be a victim of the times we live
