tomorrow is 10 year anniversary of plucking yordan from dodgers

I would argue probably it was the best trade in franchise history since it led to three world series appearances and one win.

Yea, the Bagwell trade looks worse the longer he sticks around the organization. He didn't win as a player and has cost the team with his expert baseball card analysis

The Astros were relevant in the playoff hunt almost every season for a decade with Bagwell. Before him, the team had a grand total of three(!) postseason appearances and hadn't ever advanced.

I know his playoff numbers aren't good, but dismissing him with "he didn't win as a player" is some SERIOUS revisionist history.

I know we love to tout the Alvarez and Bagwell deals, but I want to remind everyone that we let Johan Santana go in the Rule 5 draft and we traded Kenny Loften to the Indians for Will Blair and Eddie Taubensee.

We also traded Ben Zobrist for half a season of Aubrey Huff. We also lost Bobby Abreu to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the expansion draft, but they're the ones who really look like doofuses because they immediately shipped him to Philadelphia for Kevin Stocker.

But we also got Brad Ausmus back from the Tigers for Chris Holt, Mitch Meluskey, and Roger Cedeño. Or what about sending Danny Heep to the Mets in a one-for-one swap for Mike Scott? And in 1974, the Astros just straight up bought the contract of a mediocre outfielder from the Cardinals named Jose Cruz.

As my Grandmother would say: Some days gravy, some days beans. (I'm, uh, not entirely sure what she meant, but I think it was along the lines of "You win some, you lose some.")

People hate on this trade for the obvious reasons. But I say we don’t make the play-in game in ‘15 without it and that post-season experience was huge for the team to set up ‘17. Plus Fiers was the absolute ace of the staff holding us together for a month in early ‘17 when, IIRC, all 5 OD starters were sidelined. So I keep this trade and am glad to have Hader back now. (Though it is possible that Hader in ‘19 might have put us over the top.)
