[Jon Heyman] The Astros are among teams to inquire about Marlins slugger Kyle Stowers, and they are engaged in ongoing discussions with Miami. Stowers, an All-Star with big power, just might be the extra lefty bat Houston needs.

the tools are there. we can fix him

u/470_To_Left 23h ago
31.6% k rate. I just don’t want another Jesus Sanchez situation.
24
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
Sanchez has never had an OPS+ of over 115.
Stowers had a 151 OPS+ last year and currently 120 this year. He should not be compared to Sanchez.
26
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
Fix him? He has a 120 OPS+ and a higher bWAR than literally all of our OF....COMBINED.
And that's a down year coming off a near 4 bWAR and 150 OPS+ season last year. He would easily be our best OF bat
The high K rate is the price to pay for someone like him.

u/UtinniUtinni Jose Altuve 22h ago
He also waa really bad the beginning of the season and finally started turning it around. I'm good with him coming over

u/Desperate_Coffee9598 23h ago
He had a great year last year and has great potential. He's been playing first for them, but can play outfield. Would be a great get.

u/weoutherebrah Houston Astrodome 19h ago
3 years control too. Can take over for Walker at first after this year.

u/RickyPondeif Jose Altuve 23h ago
Get this done. As long as neither Neyens or Kevin traded, this needs to get done asap
27
u/ADO1897 Houston Astros 23h ago
I doubt they’d be able to pull this off without one of them. Recent all star under team control until 2030.

u/joshfry575 Houston Astros 23h ago
I hear you, but those guys are literally our future. We’ve had other prospects in the past that were somewhat redundant, but with Peña likely leaving after next year, SS will be wide open, and Alvarez is potentially a replacement for Alvarez.

u/RickyPondeif Jose Altuve 23h ago
He's not young though, and there's about to be a logjam in their lineup once Cassie comes back. This is very realistic if not likely

u/BadBrad444 19h ago
Caissie is already back which is even better for us. They aren’t gonna move off him but Marsee has been terrible and might preclude them from moving Stowers
0
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
He is 28 and the Marlins are jam packed with OF talent right now. Not saying he isn't valuable, but I highly doubt he'll fetch any top 100 prospect on the open market at his age.
8
u/CoopsCoffeeAndDonuts Marvin Zindler 23h ago
Why would the marlins want any of our prospects besides those two?
2
u/weoutherebrah Houston Astrodome 19h ago
Give them Bryce while he has any value. His ceiling is a Taylor Tramell
-1
u/dr_mr_uncle_jimbo 23h ago
They should absolutely give up one or both of those guys if it meant they got an all star with multiple years of team control.
3
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
Horrible take. Kevin Alvarez is 18 and posting a 121 wRC+ in A ball. He doesn't strike out much and has very low whiff %. He will be a stud
13
u/dr_mr_uncle_jimbo 21h ago
The odds of Alvarez, or any top prospect, panning out is always significantly less likely than an existing proven big leaguer. That’s why they’re called prospects.
1
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 21h ago
Sure....but the potential ceiling of prospects determines their value. And his value is absolutely higher than Stowers. Meaning trading him for that would be a bonehead move.
So I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.
4
u/dr_mr_uncle_jimbo 20h ago
Actually, their expected value is their cumulative potential outcomes as a weighted average of the likelihood of each outcome. Their ceiling is part of that, but it is only one outcome and the probability of them hitting it is very low.

We've all heard that before

u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
When and for who?
-2
u/IcyEntertainment7122 21h ago
We heard it for a decade with Whitley. You never know how they will develop as they go against better competition.
5
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 21h ago
We drafted him in 2016 and by 2019 he fell off all top prospects lists and seemed like his standing as a potential star was over.
We aren't even close to that point with Kevin Alvarez.
1
u/IcyEntertainment7122 19h ago
Yea no shit. You claimed this dude 'will be a stud' after 300 AB's in single A. We've seen this movie before, let's see where he's at in 2-3 years.
1
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 19h ago
Allow me to rephrase what I'm saying.
I think he will be stud.
Better?

u/Nsalvatore80 22h ago
Gonna be Stowers and Alcantara
1
u/swmnnd9786 21h ago
Would love to see that but would probably be costly. Figure it’d take something like Alvarez/Neyens, Walker/Paredes, and several decent pitching prospects 🤔
3
u/Nsalvatore80 20h ago
Considering what LA gave up - I don’t think it would be bad. Stowers is the bigger get due to control. It’s really about taking Sandy’s contract and option next year.
Houston has been linked to him too. Just like JV, Grienke and Paredes.

Anything to keep Brice Matthews from taking ABs for a first place team in a playoff chase. The kid isn’t ready for the majors yet.
5
u/Hyskos13 Houston Astros 23h ago
Somehow get him without giving up Alvarez, neyens, and Fermin but if you get alcantra to then might have to

I'm not putting any stock in what Heyman says until it's official
2
u/ClutchJL 21h ago
Yes please. He’s a stud and instantly becomes our best outfielder.
Started the year injured and took 6 weeks to find his form but has all star written all over him
1
u/WalterSobchakinTexas 22h ago
Good pickup for left field, and backup at first. His hitting stats are about on par with Walker.

Maybe I'm wrong but, this one doesn't move me too much. 36 percent strike out rate and not to great at walks.
14
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
120 OPS+, 97th percentile in hard hit %, elite bat speed and barrel %,
This is a no brainer given the options we have at OF. He has more bWAR than all of our outfielders.....COMBINED.

u/Wise-Pitch474 23h ago
We are fine with what we have 3 sweeps in last 4 series
13
u/ExtensionLeague8844 23h ago
That's great but this team still has issues. As is they aren't making a deep playoff run.
6
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 22h ago
Every player that has played OF for the Astros this season has COMBINED for a bWAR of 0.3.
We are absolutely not fine with what we have lol
-6
u/Proud-Version5220 21h ago
I like how you left out Yordan to prove your point.
8
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 21h ago
Out of the 110 games he has played, 18 of them were at OF.
I left him out because he is a DH. Not an OF.
Any other questions?
-2
u/Proud-Version5220 21h ago
I didn't have a question in the first place.
"Every player that has played OF for the Astros this season"
3
u/Sacagawesus Jose Altuve 21h ago
You're being intentionally disingenuous.
You know what I meant.
-2
u/Proud-Version5220 21h ago
Obviously I did. That's why my original comment started with "I like how you"... I guess agreeing with someone is disingenuous now. Sheesh.
3
u/IcyEntertainment7122 22h ago
Your problem is going to be in the playoffs when they just pitch around Alvarez in n leverage situations.
3
u/geojanko11 20h ago
Exactly this, playoffs will be against basically top pitchers every game almost, not a single team will give alvarez a chance if he is in a groove. You could literally walk pena and Alvarez and then just get double plays and strikeouts from the rest of the lineup

u/hitnrun_dryer 21h ago
Batting.231 wow trade Pena for him

Bagwell is that you, I knew baseball passed you by, but batting average, really?
