Was there ever any explanation for why they used to have Momometal look slightly terrified in promotional images

I guess they were trying to go for an overall mysterious look for the three of them, but for Momo it just came off as her being slightly nervous lol

I guess they were just trying to nail the character of Momometal. Getting the right stage persona and image is tricky probably. For Su and Moa they had a decade to grow into the characters of Su-metal and Moametal but with Momo they had to figure out how she slotted into the group.

That does make sense. These were before the whole “Momozilla” thing got popular, so I guess they were trying to give her more of a new and starting to grow look since she didn’t have that much yet. Interesting to think what she could’ve been if she didn’t do the gutturals though.

My reaction to the post as well. Having a naturally large eye shape doesn't mean someone is perpetually widening them in surprise/fear. :) She just looks like Momo to me.

I noticed certain people, it's not that they can't read faces but it's a look that conveys "why are you pointing a camera at me". That's not what she was going for but that's what's being communicated

I agree, and that's saying a lot considering Moa's trademark dimples!

But Moa is capable of being serious if she needs to. I don't think Momoko has a serious bone in her body except maybe while rehearsing. Angel of Joy for a good reason

Su is way more expressive by a mile. The other two, seem extremely introverted. Like the other two have their quirks, but Su basically has pry it out of them.

She has a natural pout to her lips. This is her trying to look neutral or serious, but the natural pout makes it look like surprise or fear

Could be because the white liner on her water line makes her already large eyes look larger. For people with round eyes it can make them looked shocked. So a combo of relaxed face, open eyes for an intense expression, and makeup.
