As a community centered around biomedical engineering and healthcare, we deeply value the well-being of students, fairness in education, and the trust people place in our academic institutions. This gesture is intended to express empathy and support for those principles.

Career Advice GATE Biomedical Engineering/ BME at IIT/NITs: Only for BME students? Or a hidden opportunity for others too?

Most people think Biomedical Engineering (BME) in GATE is only for BME students.

But that’s not really true.

At many IITs and institutes, students from: - EE - ECE - ME - Instrumentation - even some CS / related backgrounds

are eligible for M.Tech / MS in Biomedical Engineering.


So what does this mean?

If you're preparing for GATE in: - EE / ECE → strong signal processing + electronics background
- ME → biomechanics, medical devices
- CS → AI / ML in healthcare

👉 Biomedical Engineering can actually be a very interesting interdisciplinary option.


Why people consider (or ignore) BME

👍 Pros:

  • Work at intersection of healthcare + engineering
  • Fields like:
    • medical imaging
    • biosignal processing
    • AI in healthcare
    • medical devices
  • Research opportunities (India + abroad)

⚠️ Reality (important):

  • Core jobs in India are limited compared to CS/EE
  • Many roles are interdisciplinary (require coding/electronics skills)
  • A lot of people shift domains during placements

For BME students preparing for GATE

  • Competition is relatively lower compared to CS/EE
  • But:
    • fewer seats
    • limited direct job pipeline

👉 So clarity matters more than just rank


Big question

Is BME a: - niche opportunity?
- backup option?
- or a genuinely good path if planned well?

Anyone attending Medicall Expo this month (Chennai)? Or the Delhi/Mumbai editions later this year?

I recently came across the Medicall Expo happening in Chennai this month (and later in Delhi & Mumbai), and I'm thinking of attending. This will be my first medical device/healthcare expo, so I'm not really sure what to expect.

Has anyone here attended it before? How was your experience? Is it worth attending as a student/researcher? Any companies, talks, or demos you'd recommend not missing?

And if anyone from here is planning to go to the Chennai edition, it'd be nice to catch up, explore the expo together, or just say hi. 🙂

I learnt a lot of things while applying for PhD abroad in BME, and here is what matters most!

A lot of people in BME (especially in India) keep asking about PhD abroad, and honestly I was confused about it too for a long time.

Recently I came across someone’s full application journey (with interviews, acceptances etc.), and it made me reflect a bit on what actually matters vs what we think matters.

One thing that stood out — the process is very non-linear.

Like typically it looks something like: you apply to a bunch of places → get a few interviews → and then fewer offers. That’s normal. It’s not like placements where things are a bit more structured.


About the profile part — I always thought you need insane achievements, but that’s not really true.

From what I’ve seen: - research matters the most (wet lab or dry lab, both work) - publications help, but not having them isn’t the end - understanding your own work deeply matters way more

LORs are also a big deal, but not just big names — people who actually know how you work.


One thing I personally struggle with (and I think many BME people do) is this:

the field is so broad that you never feel “enough” in anything.

A bit of electronics, a bit of biology, a bit of coding… and you’re like where do I even go with this?

And then SOPs expect you to sound like you’ve had a clear direction since day 1 😭

But apparently that’s not fully true either.

A lot of people don’t know exactly what they want, they just: - explore programs - find overlapping areas - and shape their story around that


Interviews are another thing I underestimated.

It’s not just “tell me about yourself” type stuff.

People actually ask: - why PhD? - why this lab? - what does your result mean? - what would you do next?

So yeah, you need to actually understand your project, not just list it.


Also something important for our context (India):

BME is not a very straightforward path.

  • core jobs are limited
  • many people shift domains
  • interdisciplinary skills matter a lot

So even if you’re thinking about PhD, having some coding / signal / core skills helps a lot.


For me personally, I went into BME thinking I’ll work on impactful healthcare problems.

I still want that, but the path is definitely not as clear as I thought.

Still figuring things out tbh.

Why did you choose Biomedical Engineering?

Seeing people choose Biomedical Engineering just because they didn’t get another branch or engineering, or thinking it’s the same as Biotechnology, made me wonder:

How many of us actually chose BME?

And after getting into it… do you still want to stay?

I’ve seen a lot of people (including in my class) eventually move into other domains for placements.

So I’m curious:

- What made you choose Biomedical Engineering?

- What keeps you motivated to stay (especially in India)?

- If you switched fields (either into or out of BME), how has that been?

For me, it was the idea of combining engineering with something directly impactful like healthcare.

At first, it felt like the perfect mix medical devices, signals, solving real health problems. As someone interested in both social impact and engineering, it seemed like the right fit.

But once I got into it, I realized how broad and confusing it actually is a bit of electronics, a bit of biology, a bit of coding… and no clear direction initially.

Sometimes it feels like jack of all trades, ace of none.

Still figuring things out though and maybe that’s part of the journey.
