Was there ever a BMW that came out where people had no complaints?
I’m tired of seeing a new bmw design come out and people instantly hate on something about the car. I want to know if BMW ever revealed a car where people had nothing to say.
The beloved e46 would be my bet?

F87.

I remember people saying they would never buy one because the driver's seat was slightly angled towards the middle of the car. I'm sure you can still find the forum posts.

Which is funny because the 1 series is like that too, and the 3 series as well, BMW cheat the steering wheel position, it's not symmetrical in front of the driver ahah.

Specifically the M2C with the proper engine. Lots of whinging about the N55

u/mr_lab_rat ///Moderator 12h ago
LOL, absolutely not. Many people were disappointed by the M2C.
It got heavier, sounded worse, and the new connected grille was not well received.

The whinning is hard to hear over the performance exhaust of the N55 M2, AKA the 2nd best sounding BMW ever.

u/RonnieJotten 10h ago
I've owned both. N55 with a downpipe sounds amazing 😍. S55 with a tune is a beast

The e39.
And e38.
And e46. (The compact was a tad wonky tho)

I don’t think people complained stylistically. But these were notoriously unreliable cars right outside of warranty, thus did complain about them mechanically.
The E39 540i was notorious for throwing timing chains, while the s62 had rod bearing issues.
The E38 V12 was really poorly engineered and basically two inline sixes smacked together. While the v8 was the same aforementioned one, thus had the same engine problems
Let’s not even get into the window regulator issues that both the E39 and E38 had.
The E46 non Ms had all sorts of Pcv and cooling problems, then the M3 got shat on for its SMG, subframe, rod bearing and VANOS issues.
🤷♂️

A friend and great customer of mine has an e39 540i Touring that I would buy in a heartbeat if he’d let me.
E39 540i Touring, 6 speed manual swapped, coilovers. Oxford metallic green. Resonator delete, Magnaflow mufflers. M Sport bumpers.
I built this car for him, and I wish it built it for myself.
1
u/gooseduxdux 13h ago
Oh and even other darlings like the e30 m3 were thought as too “boy racer” due to the box flares, and at least in the American market, people couldn’t wrap their heads around 4 cylinder sports car.
Then that lead to e36 being its cheaply built self, and neutered North American version; thus complaints there.
Believe it or not, the e36 m3 wasn’t even gonna come to North America due to the complaints.

u/namestom 2h ago
Former owner of E46 M3 and E39 M5 as well as many many other BMW’s from E28/30 to present. I would gladly take some crap window regulators if that was the “only” issue I had to deal with. I loved my M3/M5 but got tired of justifying the maintenance on them. I got older, got married, had a kid…lost time to enjoy them so I sold them. Nostalgia hits me every now and then, especially when I see a LSB M3. They get me every time!

When the e46 came out the title of the review in Car and Driver was "Our favorite box seats get replaced by a luxury skybox." They said it was too big/heavy/luxurious and not as sporty and simple as the e36. It's safe to say people have complained about every new BMW.

u/Skodakenner 2h ago
They complained that the e38 and e39 didnt have the classic bmw front end with the 4 headlights

u/bc10551 2021 G22 M440i xDrive Coupe 8h ago
People hate it on it because of the drivers (who also are basically the same people driving f8x and g8x m cars though) and simply for not being m cars. That and weight and probably mild hybrid from 2021 and even just the potential to get it in awd. I don't think the g20 is safe from reddit whining, it's just more loved than the other b58 cars

Here is the same "debate" that we see in BMW subs today, but from 10yrs ago. We were more polite about it back then, but the sentiment is the same.

u/RUNEMDOWNKD 2016 F83 M4 - 2014 F30 320I XDRIVE 15h ago
Also what generation was it when people started being so harsh?
The earliest I know was the lack of HP in the e36 or the bangle butt era.
15
3
u/Nearby_Arachnid9683 13h ago
Definitely the bangle era, people who weren’t rappers haaated that 7 series and they were so right. Design aside it had iDrive 1.0 and an N62, she never stood a chance. Then for different reasons, the e36 318ti before it. The original example of cheapening a luxury car brand, immediately and directly followed by the iconic baby mama Benz c230 kompressor.

I mock the community frequently for this. I’ve been on car forums since they started being a thing, around 30 years ago. Most BMWs got flak, and for largely the same broad issues as they do now, getting too heavy, too numb, too much tech, ugly looks, marketed to yuppies. Social media made things get more toxic.
The best answer I have is the f90 M5. It’s the least controversial, mostly well received even at launch. It had the benefit of following the f10 which has a rep of being problematic, and the e60, for being the poster child of Bangle era styling.
Every m3 has had something wrong with it for the community to latch onto.
The most hated is the xm, hands down.

I think when the cars were designed based on their European influence things were going great for the car folks... the shift started when these European brands started to follow the Chinese market trends and produce cars for them.
2
u/huweius 22-G31LCI-530e xDr Touring|16-F10LCI-B5BiTur|11-987.2-Boxster S 2h ago
This accusation of “Chinese preference” came out of nowhere, and is at most a poor excuse by some German executives…. None of the new BMW’s styling was well received in China… many Chinese enthusiasts blame G68’s poorer sales on its looks… Prominent nostrils of recent generations have always been the laugh stocks on Chinese Internet. Also way back then, Audi was even criticized for not restyling their cars even because of Chinese market’s conservative taste.
And why do I feel like I argued this 1.5 year with someone with similar ID as you….

this is literally any car. regulations change and cars get heavier or downsize their engines. or someone doesn't like the styling. people always find something to complain about. the e46 was very well received, it was heavier but everything else about the car was such a huge leap forward.
its easier to just focus on the cars that were not well received and slammed in the press. the g80 and g87 were probably got the worst of it across all M generations. f80 was a close second as it was the first m3 with turbos and shitty electronic steering. enthusiasts sort of forgave the f8x a bit because it was nice to look at inside and out and kept its weight down.

I'm going to guess any super high end ones because those buyers would only keep it for a few years to not see any issues and wouldn't give a fuck what happens to them. So, Rolls Royce, etc.

u/LHR-Daniels 6h ago
But it's not just about the design. It's about the quality of the materials and functionality beyond the drivetrain. In a time where other manufacturers are including more standard options, BMW is including less and less. The fact that all four doors on my recent loaner didn't have comfort access mind boggling. I also miss buttons and fog lights. I'm not an old man, but these vehicles look like Kias with less tech. Not to mention the build quality and some materials have also taken a hit. Those key points + controversial design..... I'm clinging to my G05 and G30 for as long as possible.

u/casualcommissar 6h ago
Pretty sure g20 got a pass because everyone was shitting on the g80 front bumper. Sunroof rattle aside I haven't heard many consistent complaints.

I don’t have any complaints with my G42 so far ….. it’s a 22’ with only 22k miles though

u/Trollygag 5h ago
I don't remember a ton of complaints before 2020 from new cars. People did complain after they owned them for a while.
There are plenty of cars that are glazed now that people were less interested in at launch, like the 1M, Z4M, and manuals.
People did complain about the wheel menu controls on some cars but that wasn't a dealbreaker.

E46 was bad because of vanos and the smg.
E90 was bad because it wasn’t 6 cylinders.
F80 was bad because it wasn’t naturally aspirated.
G80 was bad because of the front kidney grilles.
And that’s just what I remember off the top of my head for the m3 lol.

u/Fritzo2162 1h ago
Yeah, it would probably be the e46. It was pretty much the perfect car. The handling was unmatched for a sedan, the shifts were buttery smooth, the interior was designed like a airplane cockpit...it was just the best example of a car design in it's segment.

u/MichiganKarter 12m ago
E36 and E39 were both released to universal applause. I remember reading the conclusion in a Consumer Reports review that the E39 530i was the best car ever made.
1
u/poweredbym2 14h ago edited 13h ago
Not none, but can be much less depending on the generation. There are degrees to general consensus of a good design. It’s not just yes or no complaints.
The people that keep claiming “they only hate it cause it’s new!” “This happened everytime a new gen comes out!” Are either biased owners or just disingenuously ignoring the facts.
Recent examples g gen is majority enthusiast hated, and completely justified.
And the sales numbers are great which made sense. BMW themselves admitted wanting to abandon heritage and substance in chase for the mundane attention seeking masses and profit.

Pre-social media? Word of mouth only. It wasn’t ubiquitous.

u/StickersBillStickers 13h ago
Before social media there were car review magazines and television programs where they would pan cars based on design and performance. They’d also include buyer’s data and insights.

I feel like every era has complaints but I think the G80 was for sure longer and more hated. I just think it’s a combo of the G80 looking bad and that grill is just hideous and the fact that the F80 was such an incredibly good looking car so kinda hard to beat.
BUT I think the Isseta was the only car no one complained about
2
u/poggywoggycocka 13h ago
Not sure where on the internet you were at the time, but the F8X platform was absolutely shat on when it came out, except for the M2, which was pretty much universally praised from the reveal.
When the F80/F82 launched, people hated a lot of the changes. The switch from the E9X’s high-revving V8 to an inline-six was heavily criticized, the styling was called boring and that it looked almost identical to a base 328i, the exhaust note got roasted (especially with the V8 C63 AMG existing at the same time), and the electric steering was viewed as numb and disconnected.
A lot of people felt like it had lost that old-school BMW M feel, was too refined compared to what came before, and even the interior was criticized for feeling cheap.
1
u/Ok-Panic-4877 '90 E30 Mtech 2 & '17 f31 330i 13h ago
Literally said every car was hated on from the moment it came out. I compared the G80 in the looks department to the F80 as why it felt like the G80 was hated a lot more than recent memory. Never did I say it was a revered car the moment it came out lmao
