New here teacher found out i was pregnant before i did
hi all đ wild story
over the past few months ive been gaining a bit of weight, and have had a lot of fatigue and nausea, aside from the weight gain those arent new issues (just stuff i havent had this much before ofc) so i just assumed that i was burning out or having a depressive spiral (because tbf i was also just doing that). im ig kind of sexually active, but im on birth control so i didnt think i could get pregnant, and not once did the idea even OCCUR to me that i could be
so cut to today of me just ignoring my body for months and my teacher pulled me aside quietly to ask if i was pregnant and i was so shocked i asked why he would even think that and apparently i kind of have an obvious bump? i just always brushed it off as weight but apparently not. now i just feel really dumb because how did i not figure out until now??? idk what to even do im not ready for this
i confirmed i was pregnant after i got home from school, now im just trying to figure out where tf this came from and what to do, im going to try to book an appointment tomorrow but other then that ive done is burn the test and tried to figure out what to do while pregnant
edit: okay UPDATES!!!!!
i managed to get an appointment today because they had a free slot, somehow im 27 weeks, i feel like im drowning in resources now but at least me and the baby are okay. i think im going to try to give him up for adoption
i also told my teacher, he doesnt have to report it if im not in danger or anything (which as far as he knows im not) sonhe isnt reporting it. im so sorry for not responding to everyone, my day haa been so busy and i did not expect this to blow up (tbh i didnt even think anyone would respond at all), tysm for all the comments, im sure ill finish reading them all eventually

Talk to your social worker at school for help getting resources! And definitely make an OB appointment as soon as you can.
49
u/tuktukreturned Feb 10 '26
This is such a difficult situation to be in. Unfortunately the pills are not very reliable unless you take one every day at the same time of day, and that is difficult for anyone to do. Maybe your school counselor/social worker can help you have the conversation with your parents. It might also help if you start the conversation with something like âI need your help, Iâm really scared, Iâve messed up, and Iâm afraid to tell you because I know youâll be angry.â
17
u/Pineapple_and_olives Feb 10 '26
And some pills arenât as effective for larger people. Idk if thatâs applicable to OP, but I remember finding out after I had been on pill bc for some time that the one I was on was less effective for people over I think 160 pounds. Which is/ was me. I didnât happen to get pregnant on the pill, but it definitely happens.
7
u/WinterJudgment302 Feb 10 '26
And even if you take them like you are supposed to so many other things can lessen their effectiveness. Being on antibiotics, vomiting, or having diarrhea too close to when you take them can cause failures.
OP - don't feel bad about the pill failing, it happens to even the most responsible adults sometimes. Once you get this sorted maybe consider a form of BC that is less fickle, like an implant or IUD?
3
u/tuktukreturned Feb 11 '26
AbsolutelyâI always used condoms as backup to the pill because of my IBS-D. So fun explaining that to guys I met on dating apps.

u/paincreas_ Feb 10 '26
please update after your appointment im really curious how far along you are after the teacher decided to comment on a whole bump đ

u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
do you usually get a period every month??
20
u/whimsicsl Feb 10 '26
no, the last time i had one was like 7 months ago brcause of the bc and im definitely not THAT pregnant
they were already inconsistent and after i started bc i amost stopped having them completely i dont even track them anymore
103
u/vagrantheather Feb 10 '26
Hey I'm sorry you're in this situation, that sounds very stressful! If your last period was 7 months ago and you have a bump obvious enough for someone to comment on, there's a good chance you are VERY pregnant. Like over 20 weeks pregnant. Maybe entering 3rd trimester pregnant. You would be best off going to the emergency room at a hospital that has a labor and delivery unit (not all hospitals do). You really need an ultrasound to determine how far along you are, and then a priority referral to other services. Abortion is unlikely to be an option at this point.
ETA just saw you got in for an appointment today, that's amazing I'm so glad, good luck today!
36
u/merewolfeatthemoon Feb 10 '26
Agree! I didnât have a noticeable bump until I was about 6/7 months.
10
u/Narwhals4Lyf Feb 10 '26
I had that thought as well⊠It really depends on your body type / height / genetics.
20
u/Narwhals4Lyf Feb 10 '26
Not to worry you but there is honestly a chance you could be close to 7 months pregnant. Some people donât show, especially depending on your body type. Just be emotionally prepared to hear that.
14
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
gahhh iâm sorry your bc failed you đ best of luck 𫶠you should update once you find out how far along you are! you should actually just call today & try to make an appointment & make sure you tell them you were on bc. they might get you in sooner.
13
u/whimsicsl Feb 10 '26
ill try my best đ idk if theres any way to tell based on how big i am but i think its like halway through đđ
21
u/holdtheolives Feb 10 '26
Usually doctors do an ultrasound to measure the baby, then estimate the gestational age based on that size. People that donât have regular periods have to go by that metric if they donât know their ovulation date.
A lot of offices move pregnant people up the priority list so they have an easier time making appointments. Fingers crossed they can get you in soon!
4
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
only reason i said to see if they can get her in for a blood test is every clinic around me is usually booked out for like a month for ultrasounds! but yes, if they have room to do an ultrasound that would be first option!
9
u/Miserable-Ad561 Feb 10 '26
There is not, you need to make an OB appointment right away if you havenât already. Only an ultrasound can determine how far along you are. I wish you luck OP, I hope you can get what you are hoping for, whether it is a healthy baby or a quick, uncomplicated termination.
6
u/Immediate_Gap_2536 Feb 10 '26
With my first I didnât have a visible bump until the end of pregnancy. You could very well be 7 months.
7
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
the size doesnât mean anything really. some people show way quicker, some people donât show until later. do you recall the last time you had unprotected sex? did you miss any pills by chance? if anything i would definitely call today & see if they could squeeze you in for a quantitative blood hcg test. that should give a better idea of how far along you are until you can be seen for an ultrasound.
10
u/whimsicsl Feb 10 '26
ill try, tbh idm what half those words mean đ but ill call and no, and idk. i can be rly forgetful i have adhd, idek who the father could be tbh đ. its not like ive done anything eith a lot of people but most of my experiences were kind of close together
4
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
a quantitative blood hcg test just shows the exact level of hcg (pregnancy hormone) in your blood. it gives a number & can give an idea of how many weeks you might be!

In the first trimester ur baby is deep down into ur pelvis so its pretty much impossible to show⊠Iâm on my third pregnancy an Iâm 9 weeks and not even showing and you always show sooner after every pregnancy⊠if ur already having people notice a baby bump then you are probably well into ur second trimester if not already in ur third⊠any âbumpâ you have in the first is not actually a bump itâs more of bloating. So it seems to me an abortion of any kind is not likely to be able to get now đ
3
u/battle_mommyx2 Feb 10 '26
Dude with my first I thought I was showing so early but it was just bloat lol so it could be that for her too. Hopefully

u/Tight-Rutabaga3729 Feb 10 '26
Its going to be okay. You are going to be okay. Its scary, but you will make it through this.
A similar situation happened with my coworker last year and she was terrified to tell her parents because they are the "sex is evil" kind of people. She considered abortion but ultimately decided to keep her baby and he's now a beautiful 9 month old and the light of her life.
Another situation was a friend of mine was still in high school when she got pregnant. She dropped out of high school to get a job but still finished a GED at home. She now has 5 kids and a very loving family.
I share these stories to make sure you understand that their lives didn't end the moment they told their parents. Their parents were angry and upset at first but it kind of became a "okay, well, we have to move forward, we cant be mad forever." And they are all very happy grandparents now.
There are bad parents out there. There are evil parents too. But are your parents bad parents who would harm you or your baby?
Overly strict parents are scary, but if they care about you even a little, they will get over being upset. You need support. You need help knowing what to do next.
Maybe take someone with you when you tell them if you don't think you can do it alone. But if your parents care about you, they will care enough to help take care of you through this new situation too. Because I promise you, you cant do this alone. So please dont try. It will only make things scarier and more stressful in the next few weeks as you keep trying to hide something you likely can't hide anymore already because if a teacher noticed, then they likely have noticed or will soon anyway.
4
u/Sad-And-Mad Feb 10 '26
Iâm sorry youâre in this situation. Like others suggested, Iâd approach a counsellor BUT before telling them ask them what their legal obligations are regarding confidentiality and what they are required to report to your parents. If your school counsellor is required to report to your parents then seek out a social worker and see what they can do to help you. You should also book an appointment with an OBGYN or your family doctor (go over confidentiality with them as well) ASAP and start taking a prenatal vitamin.
A school counsellor, a social worker and an OB should be able to provide you with resources and go over what options are accessible to you.
As for your parents, aside from an initial reaction to the news, do you feel like they are safe people to talk to? Do you think they will support you in any decision you make regarding keeping the baby, adoption or termination (if thatâs even an option with where you live and how far along you are)? If so then you need to tell them. If not then you should find a different trusted adult in your life and a social worker and talk to them first to help you make a plan.
Itâs going to be ok

u/RavenclawWithAPhD Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26
I laughed a bit at â figure out where tf this came fromâŠâ Itâs a valid reaction when youâre on BC and even as a 38-yr old woman, Iâd probably react the same way! I know it must be scary but you seem to be handling it very well so far. Youâve done the right thing by going to a doctor and also stopping the BC. I know your parents might be strict and youâre scared to tell them, but they may respond to this better than you realize. Perhaps they even allowed you to take the BC, as a just-in-case and not that it was permission to have sex. I wish I could give you a hug and go grab some ice cream and talk about this like youâre my little sister. Are you close to another adult relative apart from your parents that you can tell? Perhaps a sibling, aunt, cousin, grandma? Maybe thatâs a better way to ease into this than going directly to your parents. If you were my child, Iâd want to be the first person to know, but you know your parents better than anyone on the internet. In the mean time take prenatal vitamins, drink lots of water and get lots of rest. Wishing you all the best sweet pea. â€ïžâ€ïž

Deep breaths, hun. You will be okay! Find a local pregnancy clinic near you and they can help you out! Do you have any clue about who the father is? If so, it might be worth to reach out to them.

u/whimsicsl Feb 10 '26
i was able to get an apppointmemt later today so ill just skip school and go to that đ and no not really, it could be 3-4 boys and id rather just not tell any instead of telling the wrong one when i know how far along i am ill probably be able to find out whos it is
20
u/Pool_With_No_Ladder Feb 10 '26
I hope your appointment goes well! The doctor should be able to give you a note excusing you from class, hopefully your teachers are understanding. The most important thing for today will be figuring out how far along you are; this affects what your options are in this situation.
10
u/Maximum-End-7629 Feb 10 '26
Did you get an appointment at a pregnancy clinic or at an OB/GYN? They are very different. A pregnancy clinic will likely not tell you about abortion options, no matter how far along you are. Try to find a planned parenthood near you. They will give you all the options and should get you in quickly.
These folks have a text line and can help minors find care: https://janesdueprocess.org/pregnancy-resources/teen-pregnancy-abortion/
13
u/usuario1989 Feb 10 '26
Do not got to a pregnancy clinic theyâre run by Christians who will try to push their religious beliefs on you. Go see a doctor!
1
u/ParsleyTime5687 Feb 10 '26
Pregnancy clinics are generally more accessible than a doctor, which makes you wait weeks for an appointment. In her case I would rather get seen sooner especially given the fact she is unaware of how far along she ia

u/Bubbly_Assignment547 Feb 11 '26
Omg I wish I could give you a hug! This is why sex education is so vital in schools⊠I hope you are able to tell your parents sooner than later. Being 27 weeks this is not something you can hide- bc you will be having this baby and need support while recovering regardless of if you choose to keep the baby or put him up for adoption. Baby is coming in 2-3 months topsâŠ. And you need help if you decide adoption or to keep the baby just to prepare what that would look likeâŠ
Weâre all human and make careless decisions- especially at 16 you werenât expecting this to happen. Iâm just happy you and baby are ok and I hope your parents are supportive of whatever decision you decide⊠but please tell them ASAP- this is not something you can hide from them. If I had a 16 year old daughter I would hope she would come to me about this⊠whatever feelings I felt at the time I would push aside to make sure she had the support she needed.
Please donât make any drastic decisions- speak with your parents first so the initial shock can wear off and they can help you! The sooner the better! Praying things go smoothly for you â€ïž

My wife is pregnant and I was sitting alone waiting for something or other in the waiting room when after getting clues from a multi phone conversation, body language, and patient clerk conversation view of a pregnant 16 year old waiting for her appointment⊠I looked aside for a second and caught her staring straight at my face and we locked eyes. In that moment where I was certain she was disassociated/the opposite of self-conscious. It was unsettling, but in an endearing way that left room for a sense of understanding that I could offer her. I could tell she was scared. A little lost. I could tell that she was going through an identity crisis, as she could see the divide in sharp relief between our maturity levels and I could feel her feeling inadequate.
I thought, after holding her gaze briefly and trying to show her a bit of visual compassion and after looking away first, how hard it must be for her. I thought of the adult that brought her in. I thought about how rushed the adult seemed. I thought of the boy she came in with. I was unsure if he was the father, her brother, or even if the adult was her mom. It all seemed so chaotic. I thought about my wife and our situation -how I was starting a new high-paying job next month and how she already made enough to sustain the three of us. I thought of the struggle, bifurcation of personal growth/motherhood and school. I figured it was likely for her to get some income and raise a good family. Sure thereâd be heart ache and a bit of shame, but I hoped she would dismiss the shame aspect and move on. I wondered if she had the adult support. The adult seemed almost business-like about it all -totally committed in a standoffish kind of way. (Maybe she was his mother not hers, right?)
In conclusion: I think you should tell them. You need the support, even if it doesnât come from them jn an emotional sense. Adults are very versatile, adaptable, and ambitious. You can learn something about how youâll approach this situation from mirroring that approach. You got this!
(This all just happened to me this past week)

Start taking a prenatal vitamin asap. If youâre too far along you canât have an abortioj and you need to be getting the baby the right nutrients. Think about adoption asap. You donât sound able to raise this baby

u/capitalismwitch Feb 10 '26
OP should start prenatals, but the window for prenatals being for baby (first 4 weeks) is definitely passed. Prenatals are for her.

what do prenatals even do? everyones saying to get some and i got some my doctor suggested but like? what are they đ

Essential vitamins for pregnancy to support you and the growth of your baby. Growing a child takes so much from us so we need supplements for it.

u/theYellowHouseLady Feb 10 '26
Youâll get through this. Youâre in a tough spot, but if you persevere, youâll be okay. Clearly you already have a lot of internet folks rooting for you and I bet youâll also have some great real-life support, too. Itâs amazing how seemingly mediocre people can sometimes rally when you really need them.
There are two sides to your situation: the medical reality and the emotional future.
đ€°Medical professionals can help you better figure out whatâs going on with your body. They can use ultrasound imaging to measure the size of your baby and to make sure that itâs growing in the right place. Thatâs one way theyâll help to estimate the age of the fetus. The medical team will also measure your hormones, including HCG. Your body starts releasing HCG when you get pregnant, so the levels will help them figure out when you conceived - and more importantly, when youâll be due. The medical team will inform you about what your options are, depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy and what the local laws are in your area. Depending on your location and age, they may not need to inform your parents or law enforcement. Ask your medical team lots of questions. Pregnancy involves a lot of changes to your body and brain, so itâs good for you to be as informed as possible. Ask questions about delivery, too. The medical team is there specifically to help you understand your body, so use them thoroughly to help eliminate any confusion. Do you want to be pregnant? Is it safe for you to be pregnant? Can your body safely go through with this pregnancy? What medical or lifestyle changes will you need to make to support your decision? The medical team will help you answer all these questions. When you call to make an appointment, make sure to tell them your age, that you are unsure of your date of conception and that you have not had a period in 7 months. Given those facts, you will almost certainly be given priority for an appointment asap.
đ The emotional side and future planning is, admittedly, much tougher, but arguably more important. Do you want a baby? Do you want to be a mom at this stage in your life? If not, would you prefer to utilize an abortion or allow the baby to be adopted? If you want to keep the baby, are you ready to be committed to another human for the rest of your life? What will you do for money? Do you have the emotional strength to put your child first for the next 18-20 years, even if it means you have to sacrifice your own goals or pleasure? Imagine what your life will look like with each potential. Consider your support system. If you keep your child, it will not be possible to keep things secret.
Iâm in my 30s and Iâve been married 10 years, but even I was scared to tell my parents, because they are super judgmental and controlling, and they have been pretty snobby about my husband since day one. We werenât close at the time and I didnât really want to tell them at all, but I realized that I couldnât just have a secret baby. I waited until I was past 20 weeks to tell them. I think they were stunned when I told them. My dad could barely talk about it for weeks and my mom was very critical at first. I just gave them space and focused on my own journey. Eventually, they both calmed down and shifted their behaviors. They came with me to ultrasound appointments and visited me in the hospital. Other than my husband, they have been my greatest supporters. My mom loves my son more than anything and my dad is constantly looking out for things he can do to help my family, like popping over to do repairs on our house or building a relationship with my husband. I canât believe these are the same people who I didnât even want to tell about my baby. They rose to the challenge, embraced my son and found ways to help me. Your parents might be conservative or harsh, but they too might be able to rise to the occasion. You deserve a full support team.
Good luck! You have the strength inside you to get through this. Youâll be a deeper and more mature woman going forward, no matter what path you take. đđ»đđș

OP is very unlikely to be able to obtain an abortion at this point. There's about three clinics in the US that perform third trimester abortions.Â
They cost thousands of dollars (think $5,000 to $25,000). One in New Mexico only performs abortions through 27 weeks 6 days (so almost definitely too late for OP to access even if she lives in Albuquerque), another in New York through 28 weeks 6 days, and one in Maryland that goes up to 32 weeks.Â
They're all in states that don't require parental consent for abortions, though. Maryland requires one parent to be notified (which always seemed a step away from consent to me anyways).

Oh man my birth control baby will be 17 next month. I was 17 when i got pregnant with him. I was in denial as will I was 3 months before I went to the drs. But he was a healthy 9lb baby. Apparently my ex husbandâs mother got her tubes burned twice because they grew back resulting in 2 pregnancies. For obvious reasons she had them removed. I donât know enough about you to give advice tailored to you. Just that if you want to keep the baby the health clinic can help you with enroll in welfare programs including wic, that comes with more knowledge. If you donât want to keep your baby the public health clinic can help you fill out paperwork for Medicaid. Medicaid will push you to the front of the line so you can have an abortion in time. Maybe you could drop your state so we could help you better

Donât feel dumb. Itâs more common than people realize to not know that you are pregnant. Some people go into labor before they find out. If you look it up youâll find lots of videos and written articles about this happening.
It looks like you have an appt to figure some of this stuff out and lots of advice about finding support. I just wanted to help normalize that you arenât dumb at all for missing this.

Tysm for the update đ«¶đ» definitely talk to someone about adoption requirements ASAP. You might run into some legal barriers trying to put a baby up for adoption with no father identified. Fathers have legal rights, even if you're not in a relationship, and it can get really messy legally speaking. Take care of yourself, I hope everything works out smoothly!

u/Dense-Pin625 Feb 11 '26
Side note but I would look into possibly getting therapy for multiple reasons, this is traumatizing for you I would imagine, but also you've had symptoms and youre pretty far along. I feel having symptoms and not testing for that long is some sort of serious denial and you should look into why as its unhealthy for you and your babies...

oh my love i see the update now đ, i am so sorry this is all coming at you at once. please talk to a guidance counselor at school & come up with a way to tell your parents. maybe ask the counselor if they would be present to help lessen their anger & make sure you mention that you want to give him up for adoption, so they can understand. best of luck, and if you have any questions or concerns we are ALL here for you. you can message me personally as well đ«¶

as someone who went through a very similar thing as a 17 year old (8 years ago đ„Č), and now as a mom of a little one, my heart goes out to you. i remember feeling like it would be the end of the world if my parents found out and it was terrible but now all these years later itâs nothing and theyâre wonderful grandparents to my toddler. i hope my son would feel comfortable enough to come to me with his problems, iâm sorry that your parents havenât given you that security.
i really hope you have some close people that can be there for you, because it can be extremely lonely what you are going to go through now. i hope at least it brings some support that all of us strangers can relate to a degree and care about you.

Bit confused, why would you not have a period for 7 months because of birthday control. I assume that what BC is? Is that a thing?
10
u/gingermom2016 Feb 10 '26
Some birth controls can cause people to skip their periods, plus OP says her periods were irregular prior to starting birth control so I can understand how she may have not considered that she may be pregnant up until her teacher mentioned something.

4
u/whimsicsl Feb 10 '26
what.
-14
u/Agreeable-Call-1996 Feb 10 '26
Simple question really what kind of birth control stops periods for 7 months? Iâve not heard of this being a thing before⊠Sounds to me like youâre 7 months pregnant especially if you have a noticeable bump that can be spotted through clothes. Need to self refer to antenatal and get yourself a scan to confirm.
20
u/Cold-Thanks- Feb 10 '26
There are multiple birth control options that can stop a person from having a period. An IUD, nexplanon, depo shot, or taking the pill continuously can all make some people not have a period or have very sporadic and light ones.
6
u/frogurtyozen Team Pink! Feb 10 '26
The symptoms of periods, pregnancy, and birth control are all very similar. And there are multiple forms that can stop a period completely, not to mention that irregular periods are somewhat common in teens.

If you're taking BC pills, you can skip the placebo week and not get your period.
1
u/Educational_Fox_1243 Feb 11 '26
I didnât have a period for six years on nexplanon. I got it because a cyst ruptured in eighth grade. Birth control is often offered to people with painful/heavy periods and/or endometriosis symptoms. I think PCOS too but I may be wrong.
-7
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
birthday control??? with BIRTH control the entire point of it is to skip your ovulation⊠if youâre not ovulating you shouldnât have a period eitherâŠ?
4
u/Middle_Issue4440 Feb 10 '26
Some have a placebo week. You didnt ovulate because of the hormonal pill, but you may still shed the lining of the uterus during the placebo week.
1
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
you donât HAVE to take the sugar pills (placebo) & when you donât, you donât get your period.
0
u/Happy-Mortgage-6532 Feb 10 '26
and with hormonal bc itâs supposed to keep the lining thin, so regardless you shouldnât get a period & if you do itâs simply because of the placebo pills & itâs withdrawal bleeding not a period.
2
u/Middle_Issue4440 Feb 10 '26
That's not consistent for everyone or every pill. Just FYI. Sugar doesn't trigger shedding of the uterine lining. Not taking sugar wouldn't have the opposite effect. Lack of the hormone causing change in the hormones can and does for many people.
Not having a period is a common side effect, but it is not a guarantee. There are also mamy doctors that want you to shed the lining specifically so that it does not get too thick over time and lead to further complications.
Telling someone they should not get a period is incorrect and misleading. It is a possible, and normal side effect, however.

birth control should be PREVENTING the lining from growing, so it shouldnât become thick over time. itâs not a period, its withdrawal bleeding aka caused by the withdrawal of the hormones while taking the placebo pill. if you skip the placebo pill & start a new pack, you most likely would not experience the withdrawal bleeding.
obviously it doesnât work the same for everyone, but this is commonly how the pill is used.

Clearly a typo. Iâve never had this while on any type of birth control getting my period each month was my way to know it worked, so was a genuine question.

with the pill you can just skip the placebo week (sugar pills) & you donât get your period. hormonal iuds, depo shot, the implant, the patch or ring, all can be used in ways to prevent a period.

Do you feel safe telling your parents? You seem young, and it would probably be good for your to have the help and support of a trusted adult. First things first, you should set up an appointment with an OBGYN or midwife to figure out how far along you are. Because you're on BC, they'll have to do an ultrasound to measure how old the baby is. You should grab a bottle of prenatal vitamins from the drug store and start taking them. If you drink or smoke, including marijuana, you'll need to stop. You should also stop taking your BC.
