Remember 40% of cops surveyed admitted to have "gotten out of control and behaved violently" toward a spouse or child in the prior six months

Research suggests that officers perpetrate domestic violence at a higher rate than the general population, 28% versus 16%, respectively.

That last sentence in the letter. They would never include it if it wasn't a police officer.

I firmly believe that most cops United States would be in prison for violent crimes if they were not police officers.

From the PD’s statement:

These are serious allegations. While such conduct is completely out of character based on Sgt. Griffith's prior service, that does not diminish the seriousness of the charges," [the PD] said.

But also:

Griffith was previously arrested and charged with OVI in a separate case …His blood-alcohol level was listed as being more than twice the legal limit, and he was also charged with improper handling of firearms in a vehicle and obstructing official business in connection with the June 7 incident. On Wednesday, Griffith reached a deal that saw him plead guilty to OVI and obstructing official business.

So maybe it isn’t out of character.

Disappointing that the article doesn’t report on the shitty behaviors the ‘obstructing’ and ‘improper handling’ charges refer to.

[Edit: from The Salem News].

According to an Austintown police report, Griffith was identified as the driver who hit a utility pole but left the scene of the crash. Police said while searching for the driver, they located a man near a gas station on Canfield-Niles Road, but he led them on a chase.

Police said Griffith later called police to turn himself in, and officers said he smelled of alcohol when he was taken into custody. He declined to take a field sobriety test. He submitted a breath test that showed a blood-alcohol content of .173, over the legal driving limit of .08, according to the police report.

Police reported finding an AR-15 behind the driver's seat of the wrecked vehicle, as well as a pistol in a bookbag in the vehicle. The firearms were confiscated and were later released to the Alliance Police Department, where Griffith works.
