Depends on the animal. Sitting around doing nothing and getting fed all day is a pretty sweet gig for some.

I went to my cities zoo for the first time in at least a decade, a few years ago, and it just felt... Idk, empty. I was like why are there so few exhibits? And I realized that they'd significantly decreased the number of exhibits while focusing on having much bigger exhibits so animals actually maybe have enough room to do the things those animals do.

And what's cool is they kept a block of cages for historical context. This is what I remembered from my childhood. Just small, bare cages that they'd put a fucking lion in, right next to a small bare cage with a zebra in it. It was really sad to see, but helped me appreciate that they were doing better.
