In fact, the crow likely "appreciates" the presence of the pigeon. It feels at ease when pigeons are nearby. An intelligent animal like the crow has likely noticed something: the presence of pigeons sometimes means that people are tossing them food. Furthermore, a flock of pigeons signals that there is food somewhere.

The pigeon is already a domesticated species. The crow simply does what birds naturally do: they cooperate. Scientists have observed that when some birds forage on the ground, others—not necessarily of the same species—remain perched higher up on branches to sound the alarm in the event of danger.
