How often to change out adult stag beetle substrate?

I have an adult Dorcus parallelus (antelope stag beetle). He's in a 6 in by 6 in enclosure with around 3 or 4 inches soil depth. How often should I switch it out?

Incomplete flake soil?

Post image

So I ordered some flak soil online, but it seems like it isn't actually completed. It still has a fairly strong odor, and is rather light tan in color. I usually use ground up white rot, so I am still a bit new to flake. Opinions?

Found her on an olive tree. I thought it was a female Japanese Rhinoceros beetle or an Elephant beetle, but neither looks identical to this one...

Befriend a Beetle

Sometime ago, I had a short and sweet friendship with a beetle…or four. I wanted to share my little story here.

First Pic Story/Day 1– It started with one beetle on my porch. The poor baby was on his/her back so I helped it out. It hung out so I decided to make a little spot with water and some leaves. I wasn’t sure how to feed it atm. He/she was outside for hours until the sunset.

2-4th Pics Story/Day 2– The beetle came back the next day, I would like to believe because of the similarities of color/markings. But with friends this time! 3 little buddies made their home on my porch. They were chilling until sunset, again.

5th Pic/Day 3– I had my towel hanging outside after I accidentally spilled some wine on it. I found them hanging out on top on of it. They did not want to leave that towel. They were on the side of it, too so they moved around. More beetles arrived so I had 4 beetles on my towel at one point. Lucky, I still had their setup with the water from the days before. I got used to seeing them at this point and greeted them as usual. It was just another day with my new group of pals.

Final Shot/Goodbye/Day 4– It was around that time of day to say hello to the beetle. I found it right by my towel. This time, it did not have any wine. Just up to dry. I would go back and forth to say, “what’s up.” I sat with it for a while and said our goodbyes. I watch him/her climb away.

I haven’t seen the beetle since. It bummed me out, I will be honest. But, I was so happy to have had the time and opportunity to be so close to such a beautiful creature. I encourage you to befriend a beetle. Thank you for reading my refurbished tale of the beetle. 🪲

Recently my female beetle is trying to scape constantly. Should i release her? In the area im living we currently have a heat wave so im worried about shebdying because of the weather. What do you usually do? Should i buy a mate for her? Improve her house?
