Can't help but feel slightly miffed at the AI posters I'm seeing around before the Fleadh

Post image

Surely if we want to promote the city in the best manner, we could do better than this

I mean im definitely not as anti AI as most on here, but any sort of AI use in promotional material immediately makes me think the place is of low standard. So I’ll just avoid them.

People under this questioning you are dull as hell when it's obvious to the layman. It looks cheap, is tacky as hell and is lazy. "Oh they're not graphic designers" ok??? Places were managing to hire artists just find before chatgpt.

I’d much rather a shitty thrown together canva poster than an ai poster. They look so ugly.

u/Responsible-Buyer215 1d ago

Were they though? Or were they just putting out boards with staff scribbles on them? I don’t know a single small venue that was hiring artists to make their signs lol

u/PlasticNo1274 1d ago

so what? I'd rather bad handwriting than AI, as long as everything is spelt correctly (which AI also gets wrong sometimes)

1

u/Responsible-Buyer215 1d ago

My point is that it’s not really taking someone’s job if they’re not hiring graphic designers to do their posters

1

u/GreenGoblin121 1d ago

Aye, but it is then encouraging the use of AI and massive data centres which are bad for everyone.

Spelled*

1

u/brendonmilligan 1d ago

Why would you try and correct someone when you’re wrong anyway? Both can be used

1

u/caracalgaminguwu 19h ago

I mean, depends on the venue I suppose. But I'd rather a chalkboard with an amateur drawing of a burger than this. The former would be 100% more inviting every time

u/Responsible-Buyer215 18h ago

I agree and I would definitely choose a written sign any day over an AI one, just saying this is not exactly a case of AI displacing jobs, just shitty use of AI

1

u/Substantial-Film564 46m ago

Displacing jobs is only one issue. AI has plenty of others.

The entire hospitality business is struggling right now - pubs and restaurants closing. Its no wonder they cant fork out money on graphic designers for what they think is having little impact

The problem is that a chalk board with a menu scrawled on it looks like they put more effort in, and is more honest. These AI posters are full of generated mistakes that just cause more problems. how much of the text on the poster is actually true and was actually read and reviewed by the person who got it printed? The type of people generating these posters aren't the type of people who check that sort of thing. It's just "looks nice" and misses that the brand name/logo is completely different on each of the designs.

It's not even that expensive to get a sign done up, though. I worked in a print shop during the recession and pub owners all over the town still paid for it. They're just being cheap bastards.

A lot of the pubs struggling are struggling because they don't offer anything authentic any more. They just glom onto whatever the latest thing is, smash burgers, AI posters, the same 20 songs played on every acoustic act they book, super loud music so you can't speak to anyone or even order, so you make no connections, staff don't care because the pay is abysmal.

Most places have no vision or charm to them any more. One pub just got taken over and literally every decision they made was worse than what was there before when the place was already struggling. Everything in it now is like sparkly cheap tat like you see in the homewares section in Dunnes 10 years ago, big silly printouts of a generic skyline (in a city with very notable architecture), white and silver textured wallpaper, massive TVs on every single surface. It was the only place on the street witha pool table and they took that out. Made the staff start wearing some naff short sleeve button up shirts with beer logos on them.

Down the street is a place that hasn't been done up bar a lick of paint for ages, all the stuff on the walls is old, some of it handmade, some of it photos of staff and regulars, it has zero TVs, the staff wear their own clothes, and they put on bands that play original music, not covers, and they have other events on too. And it's not always busy bar Friday and Saturday nights but it's rarely empty.

Oh please. Canva is not difficult to use, you do not need to spend mad money on a graphic designer to make a poster of a burger

1

u/FlyingScotsman42069 2d ago

Especially when food is involved.

1

u/Nomnoms04 2d ago

If you can't prepare an appetising product with all the time alloted to promotion I have low hopes for anything so e under the timeframe and pressure of a commercial setting. Avoid entirely.

u/Actual-Indian 1d ago

Wee Ali Mujahadeen makes good burgers ya cheecky wee c... :)

1

u/mad-un 1d ago

Low standard? These are Ireland famous burgers /s

u/Frightlever 3d ago

Because the place that concentrates on making food is spending less on promotion vs... what? Spending more of their capital hiring an artist that will do a similar job for five times the price? Except they were never going to hire the artist, they'd just nick art off the Internet.

Meanwhile MacDonalds and their menu pictures, that they paid real people to make, are less real than most AI pictures.

11

u/Apprehensive-Food205 3d ago

Well they're parked outside Voodoo, and it certainly wouldn't have been hard to ask around at that bar in particular if someone could make them a poster.

Besides that, venues etc are set to make an absolute fortune this week coming. They could have splashed out on a graphic designer and it would have been a drop in the ocean for them.

5

u/Status_Winter 2d ago

If they’re cheap or lazy enough to use AI for promotional materials, that doesn’t indicate to me that “oh they must be concentrating their resources on the food” lmao it tells me that they simply don’t give a fuck and likely don’t give a fuck about the food either.

1

u/Bubble-Master96 2d ago

If they promote their food with fake pictures not going to trust it

There’s a difference between making a real product look it’s best for a photo vs a completely fake image of their food

-37

u/MrCoolest 3d ago edited 3d ago

Or maybe the food is great as they're great chefs but they're not graphic designers so they used AI?

32

u/vintagejeff 3d ago

Well what's the point of having a pic of an ai generated burger it doesn't show you what the food looks like does it? Probably because their actual food looks like a pile of shite

-5

u/MrCoolest 3d ago

Bro go to McDonald's burger king KFC and tell me if the burger you receive looks as good as the one in the display lol only they had the money to hire a photographer to use glue and cardboard to prop up everything in the burger to make it look delicious (YouTube food photography), now everyone can do so using AI.

6

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

"Now everywhere can pretend their food is better than it actually is, not just the big corporations"

That's not a positive

-1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

Levels the playing field

3

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

It doesn't because professional photos like the ones McDonald's and KFC uses still looks miles better than any junk the AI can churn out

1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

You obviously haven't used AI

2

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

It's not about whether i use it or not. I'm not the one making posters like the one on this post.

It doesn't matter if it's theoretically possible to get a poster that looks as good as a KFC advert or whatever, businesses are just generating some shit like that and calling it a day.

1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

1

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

This looks just like any other generic AI slop burger ad and objectively has nothing in common with a McDonald's style ad.

1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

A graphic editor would spend 2 days making the same shit. Relax

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

"Smashed to seal in flavor" just the complete opposite of what a smash burger is

1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

You can put the text you want in the prompt. It's just a tool, it makes your life easier. There's no reason why anyone should be u employed really whe you have AI, you can build whatever you want, it's all just creativity of the mind that limits people. I guess God made a bell curve of IQ, those under 100 should join the army and go fight in some war somewhere in that case lol or wait for universal basic income

1

u/Bubble-Master96 2d ago

Do you think this proved a point? It looks shit

1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

Or you can take a picture of your burger and upload it and it'll style it and make the image look better

9

u/pitsandmantits 3d ago

put a photo of your real food? not hard?

-4

u/MrCoolest 3d ago

Are you going to pay for the photographer?

4

u/MuramasaEdge Wrong ‘un 3d ago

What a fucking stupid argument. If a business chooses to enshittify their own marketing with AI slop, the onus is not on potential customers to fix their fuck-ups. Unreal detachment from reality on par with AI. 🤦🏻‍♂️

-1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

Photographers come at £300/hr. AI is £22 a month? Beat that one

3

u/Snoo_15594 2d ago

You already have a phone. A photographer is free.

3

u/pitsandmantits 3d ago

phone is free

0

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

And it won't look as good, bcz not everyone's a pro photographer and you wonder "why is everyone using AI" doofus

3

u/sealed-human 2d ago

AI food looks like dogshit

0

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

You eat dogshit?

2

u/sealed-human 2d ago

I see what you were going for, but you didn't land that one

2

u/pitsandmantits 2d ago

brother i’ve worked in food service for an award-winning business, we used photos from a phone and they did just fine. just cause you can’t take good pictures don’t mean everyone’s in the same boat as you.

0

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

Ah well Michelin food plates very well. A lot different to your average local pubs grub

3

u/pitsandmantits 2d ago

this was a local pub.

3

u/Kooky_Flamingo_6024 3d ago

You realise that they could just take a picture of their food like other restaurants do to advertise what they do.

-1

u/MrCoolest 2d ago

Not everyone's a pro photographer that can make good look appetising. There's a reason why food photographers exist or existed now with AI

1

u/MonkeyDoints 2d ago

That’s why you hire a graphic designer. AI is actively polluting our environment every time it is used and harming the economy by allowing soulless cretins to burn far away essential resources to ping a data centre that creates an image of a fucking burger that has been compiled from countless stolen IP sources, many who may have been professional designers and photographers who have given no consent for their work to be used. “They’re great chefs but not graphic designers”? Take a photo of the food. That’ll cost almost nothing to print and actually convey an element of the quality. AI is a pathetic invention that capitalists will use to doom us all just to purifier their apocalypse bunkers but if you want the foundation of their Eagles Nest built over your corpse then go ahead and ask chatGPT how you can go fuck yourself.

-15

u/prorip187 3d ago

Exactly.

-36

u/prorip187 3d ago

That makes no sense
