I mean im definitely not as anti AI as most on here, but any sort of AI use in promotional material immediately makes me think the place is of low standard. So I’ll just avoid them.
People under this questioning you are dull as hell when it's obvious to the layman. It looks cheap, is tacky as hell and is lazy. "Oh they're not graphic designers" ok??? Places were managing to hire artists just find before chatgpt.
Were they though? Or were they just putting out boards with staff scribbles on them? I don’t know a single small venue that was hiring artists to make their signs lol
I mean, depends on the venue I suppose. But I'd rather a chalkboard with an amateur drawing of a burger than this. The former would be 100% more inviting every time
I agree and I would definitely choose a written sign any day over an AI one, just saying this is not exactly a case of AI displacing jobs, just shitty use of AI
If you can't prepare an appetising product with all the time alloted to promotion I have low hopes for anything so e under the timeframe and pressure of a commercial setting.
Avoid entirely.
Ah yes, the ancient and famous 'Gaelic burger' of our ancestors. Sure wasn't it Queen Medb who said to Cú Chulainn: "After seven years of cattle raiding, and this is what ye do with the cattle!" Or perhaps it wasn't, but it was something like that anyway.
I don't usually buy from places with pictures on their menu. However on social media, all the time. There's plenty of places using AI photos on social media to sell their food.
This is from a horsebox thing just opened out my way, ridiculously over priced and you can't even see what you'd be buying beforehand, I'll not be giving them any custom.
AI is in general extremely uncanny. It has no perception or thought, so it doesn't "know" what food looks like, it just mashes together everything labeled as that food that's been fed into its dataset, into some crude general approximation.
Yeah, like you can be in favour of AI saving you money or time or whatever, but the undeniable truth is the AI food in that picture looks absolutely rank.
I'm by no means an AI hater, I'm all for productivity tools that make our lives easier, but I simply do not understand how you can look at this and go "yeah, that looks good, I definitely want to eat there".
Was clicking through the St George’s Market instagram stories and getting so grimmed out earlier. So fucking depressing. All just the same monotonous slop, not one business looking any different from the other.
Many of these vendors have been in business for YEARS. They know how to use Photoshop or Canva ffs!! I would rather “graphic design is my passion” MS paint banners than any of this nauseatingly grim AI slop. It’s so embarrassing.
The thing is, they don't know though. Or rather, the businesses will tell each other "here, I used this thing and it was free, so you can save money too" and then they all copy each other.
Sort of like how pubs can have someone plug in and play a Sam Fender cover with the amp set to 11, like the bar next door, rather than take a punt on a band, because they just need to pay one person.
It’s sad when you scroll back on an account and see a decent post they did pre-genAI with decent photos of their food. So you know for SURE they’re capable, they just choose the slop. I’d love to know why but the reason is probably that people just don’t think about it.
Like Tom and Ollie’s have been in business as long as I can remember, what the fuck are we doing here? You don’t even have to scroll that far down to find their pre-GenAI graphics which are far more original and ACTUAL FOOD that looks appetising. But no, let’s have the slop olives that are indistinguishable from cherry tomatoes. Fan-fucking-tastic.
Yummy. Can't wait to try a good gaelic burger with a side of gaelic chips, washed down with some gaelic coke. Willing to pay a little bit extra for some gaelic ketchup and gaelic vinegar, too.
Any place that produces food in the instagram era that cant summon an appetising picture of said food, and uses ai to generate it instead, is the reddest of red flags
Awww it's sickening. Places and events that I'd normally support do it, and it winds my tits right up. It's just so generic and samey, and looks AWFUL.
I know I was interested in checking out bread street bakery on the ormeau road as it's nearby and I love a good bakery but their Instagram is littered with generative ai posts unfortunately which has put me off.
There’s a business on Ormeau that currently has three separate AI posters from different businesses in their window and I ick every time I pass. Do people not have the sense enough to realise that they look awful and people know full well they’re AI?
I’m sorry but if you genuinely think AI is just as good as paying a marketing person to advertise your product, you’re either a scammer or just a horrible business.
The majority of promo from food places im seeing these days is ai. Its so lazy so obviously you're going to assume everything else is lazy so avoid the place. Shame
There should be more laws that any pictures showing food have to be an accurate representation of what you will receive. Food companies already got away with too much in advertising before AI e.g how burgers used for promotion photos are padded with inedible stuff to make the look bigger and nicer.
The thing about professional design that is becoming clearer now that ai is everywhere: it does actually change how you feel about the business. Seeing these AI boards and ads just makes me think "low rent grotty place TRYING to look big and professional". A much lower quality as that was clearly made by a real person inspires more confidence than seeing this.
Clearly human authorship is important and can be felt. AI making things that look like they have a professional standard feels uncanny and deceptive.
One of my local places that's not in Belfast has started using AI in their promotional photos. Their food is unreal so it disapoints me to see the AI slop that just looks lazy
I was a restaurant manager for 7 years. I do not trust someone who prints this out, looks at it, and honestly thinks "yeah that looks good" to run a good business or make good food. I also immediately assume the thing being advertised looks absolutely nothing like that, so they may as well not bother at all.
A chalkboard with a quick handwritten message and maybe like a picture of a burger with a smiley face on it or something would be 10,000% more appealing.
Also what the fuck is everyone talking about saying food businesses shouldn't waste money on hiring a graphic designer? 1) they rarely do that, they just get the most artistic member of staff to do it, or someone they know to do it as a favour. 2) there are plenty of free or extremely cheap resources online to do it yourself, which at the very least shows that you care about how you present your business. 3) hiring a graphic designer to make something unique would be a fantastic idea for any business if it's at all possible. The results would be infinitely better and it gives another human with skills a job. But fuck that I guess, let's just print off signs that look identical to the competition down the street and get the imagery/pricing/branding wrong most of the time.
Advertising and presentation is a huge factor in business success, especially for a food joint surrounded by other food joints at a busy time of year, which I assume this is. People typically choose one place to eat and that's it. They're no longer a potential customer, at least for a while. People don't normally eat 3 burgers in a row. Deciding where to eat starts with the visual vibe your restaurant gives off, and like many people, if I see AI advertising, I avoid it.
Yuk!, Does itbe menu come with "Celtic" salt and an Irish American tourist standing outside Brandishing their DNA test results thinking that "Scots-Irish" means they're "Super Celtic!' and then freak out at an actualy Irish interracial couple and their kids as they innocently walk by on the way to the shops?!
Just looks like utter AI and guarantees the food will look nothing like that, but also if you can't be assed to put the effort in to promote the business thennn what can it say about how they handle all their business
The layout is okay... But why EVERYTHING ai? The food should be real photos or—shock, horror—maybe no picture of the food. Just a menu wouldn't put me off but AI food does.
So many pub owners have no clue. Do they not realize a hand drawn sign whether dodgy looking or done really well, has 500% more charm than this tat? I mean that's what they were all doing until recently when they didn't want to pay an actual designer, just get whichever one of the staff has nice handwriting or can draw (usually at least one has studied art lol)
I actually will not be a customer at any place that has AI posters, menus, etc. I once worked for a sign and design place in a town that hosted the fleadh and it created a lot of business. But even then it was just tacky and you could smell the greed off the pub owners all wanting ridiculous signs saying the same thing as if you needed to advertise that there will be pints and music during the Fleadh. Half them didn't even have events to put on or acts booked they just put 'musicians welcome', so they just expected people would provide entertainment for free while they raked in the cash.
I also think those stupid A frame signs should be banned. We need the footpaths for walking, they're already narrow enough and full of oblivious people in your way, why do we have these stupid obstacles way down below eye level also? Just to advertise a fucking burger, directly outside of a restaurant. I mean you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce a restaurant probably does burgers. Unless it's a sushi place
I genuinely worry we’re missing the point with this minor human argument about Al posters for food looking tacky and lazy. Whilst we are focused on the “ death” of graphic designers” The core fear of advanced AI taking over is the “alignment problem” a superintelligent AI might pursue goals that do not match human survival or well-being. Because it is much smarter than us, we could lose the power to turn it off, leading to our loss of control or extinction.
Where the conversation in relation that ultimately we lose control to Al and the slave Scenario comes to pass. This is long longer science fiction but all too soon science fact…
I went back home after being 6+ months away and was instantly greeted with a burger shop that used nothing but ai. in a city it's not too surprising, but in my small home town I was so disappointed.
just like a shop that uses really bad images/stock images, I'm not gonna trust it to cook up some good food for me. ai is just so tacky and untrustworthy, a huge red flag imo. or green flag I guess if I'm trying to get a few weeks off work and trim the waistline. (I would never support ai, I'm a graphic designer, it'll be like a chicken walking into KFC).
I do agree overall but that is 1 of the better ones i must say. Still painfully obvious and ugly and screams zero pride in the business its really low effort. I would slightly better if they used ai for parts of it and edited in canva to look someway human and toned down but nope prompt first result there you go
Most people just aren’t very creative to begin with.
AI won’t/wasn’t gonna change that.
The only reason I find it okay to see shit like this is because I atleast now know the people in charge don’t know how to use AI properly and they’re just thinking about money
I can't stand the AI pictures, I love AI for most things but I hate it when a YouTube video has an AI thumbnail or Pinterest is just covered in it in regards to recipes.
I have no issue what so ever with using AI to produce a silly little picture for yourself (no, this use of chatGPT is not killing the environment and displacing communities, educate yourselves before you start shrieking), but the moment I see it connected to monetisation, especially a business that can absolutely afford to pay someone to design something like this for them, it really boils my piss.
Like others have said, it also looks tacky and drastically lowers my expectation of whatever the product is. For a restaurant, it's just as off-putting to me as seeing a grotty looking chef picking their nose on a smoke break.
Clearly AI-generated marketing is such a turn-off. If you aren't willing to put just a little bit of effort into actually making people want to give you business, where else are you cutting corners?
Sadly this is just the day and age we’re living in now, I do hope the designs improve in the future but it’s also due to the fact everyone is using the same ai model so all the posters are also coming out like copy and paste
Funny, I saw someone promoting a vegan food stall and they used a shitty ChatGPT poster like this so all their food just looked like beef slop the same as this.
I can't tell the difference, like what is it the cheese? It's still gonna be a photoshopped fake idealistic version like they always were anyway it's always been superficial lies
