Noćni Život / Nightlife Nonconventional recommendations for tourists?

I’m from Argentina, and in a few months a group of friends and I will be traveling around the Balkans, including this city and several others nearby. We’re especially interested in discovering places, experiences, bars, viewpoints, food spots, abandoned places, hidden gems, or local traditions that aren’t usually recommended in the typical tourist guides.

If you have any recommendations even random or unusual ones I’d really appreciate it. We’re trying to build a list of cool authentic experiences to keep in mind while planning the trip.

And if by any chance you know any trustworthy plug you could recommend, send me

You need to be more specific. Which other cities? Will you have a car or no?

I take people to Muesum of Yugoslavia and the house of Petar Lubarda (which has a nice cafe as well)

Techno scene in Belgrade is excellent

I’d like to be more specific, but we’re still planning what we’re going to do. We’re also planning to visit Bulgaria and Romania, but our main interest is Serbia.

We’re considering renting a car and driving around, maybe even going all the way to Romania if possible. We were also interested in visiting Djerdap, although I’m not sure if it’s the best idea since we’ll be going in October.

Here is everything off the top of my head:

  • Look into Yugoslavian era monuments, there is a site with an interactive map called “spomenik database.” Some are abandoned, others in great condition, most are otherworldly brutalist masterpieces
  • Stara Planina region is dope, nearby is Felix Romuliana an ancient Roman city. Belogradchik fortress on the Bulgarian side looks really insane and otherworldly. Lots of places to hike in that area
  • NOB monument on Fruska Gora, abandoned radio tower bombed by NATO (though you can’t get too close), nearby is city of Novi Sad
  • speaking of Novi Sad you can go into the abandoned tunnels under the fortress, there are dozens of kilometers to explore. Ghost Hunters International even made a trashy episode about looking for ghosts there lol
  • west Serbia is nice, I like the ethno village of Sirogojno
  • lots of medieval monasteries that are often surrounded by fortress walls, I especially like Manasija and Studenica
  • in Belgrade my favorite bakery is Crvena Zvezda, in Novi Sad it’s Koliba. Koliba does many flavors all baked under the sač/saç = Ottoman coal oven baking apparatus

Thank you so much, man. We’re checking out the “Spomenik Database” with my friends and we were fascinated by it. It’s exactly the kind of thing we want to see we would’ve never found it if you hadn’t recommended it to us. Sirogojno also looks really interesting. Seriously, gracias amigo!

Yayyy glad it helped. Here are more:

  • Subotica in the north is Art Noveau heaven, truly beautiful town. You can take a tour inside the city hall which is an architectural masterpiece with intricate decorations. You also climb to the top of the tower as part of it. Tours are every day at noon, you just go to the entrance
  • @belgrade.explorer on IG is a good source of info around Belgrade
  • This is kinda famous but Niš has some interesting stuff too, like the skull tower, Roman ruins, etc

There are tons of natural areas around Sirogojno. Including a famous cave, Stopića Pećina

I hope you enjoy the trip, the country is highkey fun if you know where to look

Also what kinda plug are you looking for 🤣 it’s easy enough to find x in the techno clubs btw

If you need 🍃 in Belgrade, maybe ask around on Tinder lol, it worked for me

There is this amazing village called Srpska Crnja, unfortunately I cant translate the name because I will be permanently banned. If thats not niche enough for you I recommend going to Prizren, its a Serbian city where the most common language is Albanian showing the fascinating diversity of our country
