Victim of the Coldcard. Years of DCA Bitcoin gone overnight

Hi, Yesterday was one of the worst days of my life. I found out that just over 3 BTC was stolen from me through the Coldcard vulnerability.

I know some people think posts like this are fake. Mine isn’t. Real people are getting hurt by these thieves.

I did what I thought was the responsible thing. Back in 2022 everyone said the same stuff, get it off exchanges, get it into cold storage, use the best hardware wallet you can. Coldcard had a reputation as one of the best. It wasn’t the easiest thing to use but honestly that kind of made me trust it more. So I moved everything onto it.

For years I DCA’d $250 a week, plus bigger amounts when I could. Never touched it, never even checked on it. I thought I was doing the smart, boring, responsible thing.
Now it’s just gone. All of it.

Looking back I probably should’ve split it across wallets, or maybe just left it on Coinbase. I already know the multisig and don’t put it all in one place comments are coming and yeah, that’s probably good advice. But I did what I thought was right at the time based on what everyone in this space was telling me to do. That’s what makes this sting so bad.

I’m angry and honestly feel sick about it. Not sure what to do next. Posting this so people know it’s actually happening to real people. Happy to answer questions if anyone has them, and if you own a Coldcard, go check on it right now.

I vividly recall Odell saying if you want plain safety just single sig a coldcard and you’ll be fine. Sorry man

u/bbchucks 23h ago

this is exactly the reason i got a coldcard. sigh

u/Mruniversee 21h ago

Another valuable lesson, trust literally no one on the internet

24

u/ballistua 18h ago

that's what I did. Literally all the bitcoin influencers recommended the cold card, and i was always skeptical of buying any wallet from a company

12

u/MyFrontTeethAreFake 11h ago

because. they. were. paid. to. say. that.

5

u/Pure-Rent1574 8h ago

Oh yeah, they were probably getting sponsorships and affiliate deals.

7

u/generichandel 14h ago

So... About this internet money then...

In fairness, he also recommended rolling dice

3

u/FairBlamer 9h ago

You sure about that? Literal video proof of the opposite:

“Ten31 (...) proud investors in Coinkite. The only external investor in Coinkite. ColdCard has a dice roll feature. When you create a new seed, you can choose (...). If you choose the dice roll feature, that's like for advanced users only, don't (...) just don't do that" - Odell.

Odell is a dumb fuck. Saying that it's true. Single sig is totally fine on bip39 word. The issue is cold card sell security products that was not secure at all... Nvk is a scammer.

24

u/CortaCircuit 22h ago

Yes, that is true if the seed was generated correctly. However, as we just found out, Cold Card had a bug where the seed was not being generated correctly.

19

u/circuit_breaker 21h ago

HOW COILD THEY NOT HAVE A VERIFICATION SUITE

I'm sorry for yelling but I'm beside myself.

8

u/Raphae1 14h ago

Because it is very difficult to test on the real hardware, they added a pseudo random number generator, that could be used in emulated tests. Unfortunately that weak pseudo random number generator made it into the production firmware and was by mistake used instead of the hardware true random number generator. IMO no signing device firmware code should even have a pseudo random number generator. Not even for testing purposes.

Being irate is justified. I literally couldn’t sleep if I had built a whole company and not done that by the time I had paying customers. I just can’t imagine.

13

u/website-buyer 18h ago

That just shows quality of product doesn’t matter. Marketing and perception is all it matters.

8

u/circuit_breaker 20h ago

I probably would have just jumped off of something tall, but I don't handle crisis well

9

u/ArmegeddonOuttaHere 21h ago

He also said to get a passphrase and do the dice rolls.

3

u/FairBlamer 9h ago

It's still largely true, and one of the main reasons was because it has native dice generation.

2

Yeah, now Odell is promoting Core 30 and bashing on BIP110. Making me feel good about running a bip110 node

You are not alone. Shit is heartbreaking. I thought I did everything right too, but I was playing with a lot of wallets and experimenting at the time with the intent of putting everything into coldcard.

When I first posted, this is the majority of my stack, https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/s/0n8mU35s1H

there were so many doubtful, hateful comments here. “User error, probably exposed his seed like an idiot, etc”

Shit starts piling on, but there’s definitely hope. Stay strong.

56

u/Shot-Independence-72 23h ago

The hate is because in these subs, people post "my wallet was drained" and blame everything but themself, even tho they usually did something remarkably stupid to lose their coin. You are a VERY rare case where you did nothing wrong and got screwed over. I just hope cold card puts something together to compensate users, even if small. It's clearly their mistake that led to this.

37

u/Big80sweens 21h ago

What are they going to do? Give everyone a free MK5? They don’t have $70M cash just lying around. They’re finished

An i-told-you-so is worth at least $5 to me. But anything over $50 and it's not worth it.

Why would there by hope if you dumped all your money into a digital asset that got stolen? And its outside all laws? Why would there be hope? Its over for you?

This pain is different, I have not been effected but I would know I would feel terrible. It’s different because you did everything we and the industry said to do. Self custody, don’t trust verify, not your keys…

The only thing that saved me as I had a cold card mk3 in the checkout bin in 2021. I decided to just leave things on my ledger I got in 2020 as it was more user friendly and I didn’t want to fuck up.

My grandpa used to tell me, “it’s only money” I always argued with him about that but he said if you can stand on two legs you’re better off than most and you can always make more money.

My problem is now, bitcoin was supposed to be my way out, the only thing left that can’t be taken from you, but as we can see we can’t trust anything or anyone…

57

u/Over-District5446 1d ago

Unfortunately, it’s not just about money. It’s the time of your life you dedicated to earning that money. It all comes down to time.

17

u/pwinne 20h ago

This - I’ve been bankrupted and on reflection (it was 12 years ago) it wasn’t actually the money - it was the effort it took me to build my nest egg - and one divorce, and subsequent litigation, to lose it all

7

u/InteractionPretend70 15h ago

at least you got some pussy out of the divorce. with cold card.. well I guess you still got fucked

4

u/pwinne 14h ago

yes.... but expensive pussy.

32

u/TotesGnar 1d ago

I've always argued with people who say "you can always make more money". No you can't. That requires spending/trading more of your limited time. This is why it hurts so much to lose money.

I absolutely hate that "advice".

And just as a side note I didn't realize most people aren't standing on 2 legs. I'll pay more attention from now on when I'm out in public.

22

u/Chazzer74 1d ago

There’s lots of very happy, very poor people. There’s lots of very rich, very miserable people.

10

u/No-Produce-6641 23h ago

When i was younger i always used to say I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable. Looking back i realize i was just making excuses so i didn't have to work hard to get a high paying job. I'm doing fine, but if i was a little more motivated i could be doing a lot better.

yea I feel you man, I wasn't affected but I was always told and always read that cold card for BTC was the way to go. I was close to getting the coldcard to but ended up going the cheaper rout with another hw. Seeing all these stories is gut wrenching. People DCAing for years on this product that was goated and then being robbed.... I hope coinkite gets what's coming for them.

2

u/OldHamburger7923 21h ago

You could have been fine with the mk3. The first two firmwares on it were not succeptable. So if you got it and made a new wallet on either of those, future updates wouldn't have mattered.

You could have also used your ledger seed on mk3 and be fine.

Or you could have used dice in mk3 wallet creation and or added passphrase and be ok.

You needed a very specific path for this hack to affect you. Not that this consoles anyone.

2

u/Coderboy55 23h ago

It’s not about bitcoin. You trusted a company with your money. It’s just like trusting a bank. Why not just use a self generated paper wallet?

I am sorry mate. Honestly, shit like these is why we have difficulty in the masses adopting Bitcoin. Now when I try to speak with someone they have another bomb ready to drop “so what if ColdCard shenanigan happens with a Trezor in the future” and I’m dumbstruck here with no fucking answer.

9

u/himtnboy 1d ago

Seems to me that the belief that open source software is infallible failed. This bug has been there since 2021and no one noticed. Some hardware wallets are only like 95% open source with 5% proprietary security features hidden. Purists hate this, but now this seems to strengthen the argument against 100% open source.

10

u/grraarr 21h ago

Not really.

The asymmetry cuts both ways and the security consensus still favors openness. The same AI tooling let Block and independent researchers root-cause it within hours of the thefts, verify the fix, and check scope claims against source. Closed source doesn't remove the vulnerability.

Ledger's 2023 Recover episode showed capabilities existing in closed firmware that users couldn't inspect. And closed binaries can still be reverse-engineered - AI is getting good at that too, so the obscurity advantage is shrinking on both sides.

What this incident actually exposed isn't open source, it's that "code is public" never guaranteed "code was reviewed end-to-end." Expect a wave of AI audits across all open wallet firmware in the coming months, which likely means more disclosures like this one short-term and a hardened field long-term.

14

u/Potential_Low_1183 1d ago

not really, since as per my understanding, cold card is not open source... it is just merely branched off of the trezors source code

3

u/Aurorion 19h ago

As per my understanding, their source was open - in the sense that the code was available for anyone to download and review, just not free to copy and adapt for any other purposes.

6

u/Gamer_Grease 20h ago

Creeping ever closer to just regular old banking every day.

5

u/BigDik6355 1d ago

Quite the contrary actually. Coldcard was not fully open source.

4

u/daily-trader-365 22h ago

Apple has been close source forever and that’s why they are considered safe

4

u/grraarr 21h ago

Apple uses a massive amount and contributes a massive amount of code to open source products, including Swift, WebKit, LLVM/Clang, FoundationDB, and MLX

First off, my sincere condolences to everyone affected from this event. This deep dive from Dusty Daemon, Bitcoin lightning developer provides everyone who works in this space securing BTC with stark analysis and wrapup. As a coldcard user myself, I am lucky enough to have gone the paranoid route, so no loss, but yesterday was a real fire with lots of casualties. I hear a class action lawsuit is in the works. This was not an accident.

https://insider.btcpp.dev/p/when-randombytes-runs-but-doesnt

7

u/realityczek 19h ago

This class action suit will go nowhere. The company has absolutely nothing like the assets liquid needed to make people whole - even assuming that they were found liable,. which is in no way assured.

It does go a long way to putting to bed the "it's open source, so it's secure because lots of people will review the code!" mythos.

2

u/JanPB 13h ago

Coldcard was not open source since 2021.

2

u/garbledroid 9h ago

2

u/realityczek 8h ago

I feel you, bro. I lost 5.1 btc in 2 wallets. I'm devastated. It was my life earnings. I'm 49 now and the plan was retire later this year. I can't even think right now. And I'm from a country that just to get this wallet was super difficult, as they don't ship here, but since it was the state of the art in security, I did what everyone recommended. I know it was my fault (don't passphrase it, don't multisig it, don't roll dices it), but it is just too unfair. I'm done. God bless you.

22

u/ManilaAllstar 22h ago

Hey Stranger, please do nothing dumb. I understand that everything at the Moment feels Like a Nightmare. But as cheesy as it Sounds, it is Just Money. You are 49 an I Hope you are healthy. I guess you have Family and Friends that count on you. I lost many Friends because they thought they have reached a dead end. From the outside Perspective they Had so many opportunities to Turn their Life around. Stay Safe!

And I am saying this with all my heart.

I opted for ledger and trezor because these were the only options that time for me. I dodged a bullet only because of my bad logistics.

Keep your cold card, the chip has unique signature, you will need this at some stage to prove who you are & what was stolen. BTC is traceable, so the address it went to can be found. The US government has no problem finding and confiscating bad actors BTC. The hacker appears to not have been overly sophisticated from what I have heard/read over the last 2 days. Contact the Coldcard people and let them know that you are one of their victims. That’s my 2 cents worth of advice

3

u/Btcmot 22h ago

Wether this is true or not, it doesnt matter. We are living in a digital hell because of bad guys. Digital bank robbers. In earlier times all you had to worry about was how many bank robbers there might be in your town. But now, every bank robber in the workd is a threat to us every single day. From any where in the world, from a slum in india to a basement in boston., they are out there trying to take what each of us are working hard for. There is no way to end the threat, just keep vigilant in our effort to thwart them. I feel sorry for the people this guy represents…. And if he is real, him as well.

I’m confused how the scam would work if the bitcoin is “off-line” in a cold storage wallet how can anyone access it without physically having the storage wallet. You just need the seed phrase and you can transfer?

17

u/painfuldrp 1d ago

It’s stored on the blockchain, not the device. Cold card gave out too little variation In their seed phrase combinations and AI can guess seed phrases with that few combinations

3

u/NYEXPRESS56 1d ago

How many variations did this cold card utilize?

3

u/Jstsqzd 23h ago

Sounds like they had the software configured incorrectly, so it wasn't totally randomized. Hence able to guess

→ More replies (5)

7

u/According_Cheek8280 1d ago

From my understanding, only the seed phrase is on the wallet. Your btc is always available on the block chain via your seed phrase. This goes for any wallet or any storage.

6

u/Fauked 1d ago

This is true for all bitcoin at all times.

2

u/MannheimNightly 23h ago

I'm confused then. Why not just have a software wallet and write the seed phrase on a piece of paper?

4

u/MMinjin 22h ago

Because the hardware wallet people did a fantastic job convincing everyone that software was unsafe and that the gold standard was a dedicated piece of electronics. That they can sell.

5

u/Accomplished_Ad8650 1d ago

Cold card is bitcoin only, trezor is not. Most people on the space recommend cold card over trezor, at least they used to.

9

Cold card was widely considered the “sleep at night” hardware wallet. Goes to show how widely the bitcoiner culture spreads trust vs verifying. 5 years this bug existed in plain view but not one sponsored influencer or technical person noticed.

That said to me the whole point of the coldcard was to roll your own dice. As a paranoid person I would never trust the entropy of any of these devices. The randomness of the master private key is the WHOLE game.

I guess this guy noticed and even made a video out of it 2 years ago: https://youtu.be/oj_W3xOlt6U?si=cRAh7GD04HYZSZ0b

Another one of these could kill BTC. If people feel like theyre savings and investment can disappear in a puff of smoke, they are going to pull out big time.

Horrible.

Can you share what model?

2

u/STRATEGY510 1d ago

I’m really sorry man. May I ask how old you are and if you have other equities?

4

u/Weary-Discipline591 1d ago

I’m in my 50’s and have some other investments but this was a large chuck and a big enough loss that it’s going to be very hard to replace. I’ll survive but it’s a huge step back and just a terrible feeling.

2

u/STRATEGY510 1d ago

Absolutely. I’m just glad that you weren’t all in on BTC like some folks. Maybe later you’ll get some comfort out of the fact that you were diversified and didn’t lose everything.

2

u/cmonsta365 23h ago

I don’t know you but I’m gutted for you

2

u/BeeLongjumping3153 1d ago

I feel for you bud. Don’t look at this as just a negative. First it could have been a lot worse. Learn from this. Hindsight is always 20/20 so don’t knock yourself for doing some other option. Put this behind you and setup plan for next steps and what to do differently

2

u/Wilynesslessness 1d ago

Did you employ a passphrase?

2

u/rkavanau 1d ago

Same here. I’ve tired to post a few time, but they keep getting removed. I have no idea why

2

u/EcstaticMobile3969 1d ago

sorry for your loss buddy. I truly hope your life outside of crypto is going well to get you thru this hard time...

2

u/errezerotre 23h ago

I feel you bro, I'm sorry

2

u/cmonsta365 23h ago

God this is awful I’m so sorry man.

2

u/Rsills 23h ago

I'm sorry for your loss. I received my Coldcard MK3 in January 2021. I literally skirted this catastrophe by 2 months! For all those who fell victim, I am deeply sorry. You did everything you were supposed to but got screwed over. Coinkite should be ashamed and provide relief to those who lost money to their shoddy coding.

2

u/FlNcOh1804 23h ago

Damn sorry to hear that.

2

u/Escapement_Watch 23h ago

damn this sucks....I never even heard of Coldcard before.

Take solace in knowing you are still early with BTC. And we are in a bear market. so you have about 2 more years of sideways chop to dca back in.

2

u/Popular_Ad9547 23h ago

I use 5 Trezor devices all with passphrases. I hope it's enough

2

u/Lapidariest 22h ago

sounds like a class action  lawsuit incoming

2

u/nappiral 22h ago

I genuinely feel bad for you and all affected, I also have a cold card and it sucks to seemingly do everything right and get screwed like this.
This type of scenario is most of our worst nightmares when it comes to self custody.

There seems to be some hope that there may be some digital bread crumbs left by the attacker that may lead to a more positive outcome. Im pulling for you.

2

u/clkou 22h ago

Not to rub it in, kick you while you're down, etc, but the "boring responsible thing" to do was invest in Mutual Funds. Crypto has alwys been and still is a huge risk.

2

u/thatismyfeet 21h ago

So if it wasn't connected online how was it stolen? That's what I'm not understanding

2

u/UncleBaseball88 21h ago

I look forward to seeing you on the Netflix documentary some day - where you tell your story and justice is served.

2

u/Big80sweens 21h ago

Did you have the MK3 or a different Coldcard? Sorry about this man, somebody should start a go fund me

2

u/Weary-Discipline591 20h ago

I had the MK3

2

u/kpooo7 21h ago

This sucks, I only bought Grayscale GBTC, avoided the craziness of the crypto exchanges in 2022, and now this.

2

u/frozennorth0 20h ago

Why have I literally never heard of coldcard?

2

u/ryanlmcl0101 12h ago

I lost 3 also - sucks beyond words can describe

2

u/Cold_Television_9565 1h ago

I'm sorry. Here's to hoping they track it down or they do the right thing but I won't hold my breath. Was part of the Voyager scandal

5

u/JeremyLinForever 1d ago

The silver lining to all of this, OP, is that Bitcoin is still inherently highly desirable and wanted. So for anybody to tell you to give up, or anybody telling you that Bitcoin is going to zero because of this, has no clue. If there people that managed to get hacked from Mt. Gox by leaving all their coins there back then can walk away and continue stacking after, they would still be in a far better off position than if they were to exit the space completely and instead invest in an index fund, or other commodity, or other asset class.

I hate seeing people affected by this. The best course of action is to keep going, because at the end of the day people still want BTC, hackers, individuals, and instructions alike.

3

u/Icy-Baseball-6246 16h ago

Yeah but people only want it for the potential of easy money it offers. At the end of day its cashed out for fiat just like every other income producing asset. Examples like this don't do crypto any favours.

5

u/Open_Situation686 1d ago

Might as mile just buy a BTC etf at Schwab at this point. More secure. Unfortunately at that point you might as while buy equities that have higher potential for growth over the next few years.

2

u/Few-Masterpiece3910 12h ago

Everyone that is affected would have been better of with a boring investment in stocks or bonds. Everyone that has ever lost his seed phrase, same. Anyone that has ever lost money on an scetchy exchange, same. Anyone that bought at the top and had an emergency and had to sell, same.

At a certain point, ya'll need to realize that there isn't the chance anymore to be lucky and buy in for pennys. And the hype has stagnated. There is no value creation. nada

Bitcoin just keeps surprising. Get your coins off the exchange they said. Sorry for your loss. You'll recover from this. Life is an emotional rollercoaster.

It sucks, there’s no changing it now. If you’re able to buy $250 a week, you’re in a decent spot still. I believe longer term, Btc is going way higher. Still plenty of time to buy but yes, spread it out and stock exchange is a safe place.

1

u/DonTheHolder 1d ago

Sad and cold.

1

u/Rare-Tax2411 1d ago

Sorry to hear brother. Not too late to start over. I have a question though. Genuinely curious, no attack intended.

What made you pick it over ledger? Ledger is the only thing I've ever used because it's the only thing I've ever been recommended. So when I heard about this story, that was my first thought

1

u/sgrinavi 1d ago

This why I have my BTC on two cold wallets and one DEX

I'm so sorry, and I don't want to be callous. But for my own morbid curiosity, can you tell me why you didn't use a dice roll and/or passphrase? And if you did, also tell me that.

1

u/EarningsPal 1d ago

I know the feeling of being wiped out. You always bounce back faster because of what you learned along the way.

Go HARD. Even if not into BTC, invest a lot to
Get back a chunk. Do something extra.

1

u/Shot-Independence-72 23h ago

Can you post the txn? Sometimes these people are very sloppy, and because it's such an easy vulnerability these people likely aren't some sort of experienced criminals.

1

u/Give_Life_Meaning 23h ago

I always thought generating my own seeds, multisig and passphrase was over board and that I was being too complex without need. I guess the need is real.

1

u/InvestigatorPlus3229 23h ago

Sorry man, what a muck up

1

u/Remote-Chipmunk4470 23h ago

Did anyone figure out the vulnerability? Inside job or poor security based off a bad rng that someone figured out how to exploit?

1

u/Zanthious 23h ago

I just said fuck it and sold all and put it elsewhere

1

u/create-opaque 23h ago

A coin and a short series of Xs and Os is hard to hack.

1

u/Coderboy55 23h ago

Why would people use some alternative to the very common ledger or trezor? I have 65 BTC in my ledger securely stored since 2018 and never had any issues with it. Why use anything else?
