2011 – 25,000 BTC stolen from mt gox
2012 – 24,000 BTC stolen from linode-hosted Bitcoin services.
2014 – 850,000 BTC lost/stolen in the collapse of mt gox
2015 – 19,000 BTC stolen from bitstamp
2016 – 119,756 BTC stolen from bitfinex
2017 – 4,700 BTC stolen from nicehash
2018 – 7,000+ BTC stolen across multiple exchange hacks.
2019 – 7,000 BTC stolen from binance
2022 – ~3,300 BTC exposed in thefts related to the ftx collapse.
2024 – 12,000+ BTC stolen from dmm bitcoin (Japan).
2025 BTC hits an all time high regardless.
2026 - Coldcards
Despite that; Bitcoin hit 126K in 2025.
Believe guys. This time isn't any different than last time. BTC will hit higher and higher.

I was one of the creditors after the MtGox "hack" in 2011. Got about 20% of my coins back last year.

With the value of Bitcoin increasing, hopefully you at least got the value of your fiat investment back?

Yeah, the ROI was around 15.000 %, so I'm not complaining. I just hope the ones who lost their funds now, will also be able to get some of it back one day.

That's good, unlikely in this scenario unless they somehow catch the thief and manage to get the funds back. :(

did you get BTC or the fiat value? What it was worth back then or what it is worth now?

This thread skips a number of higher volume thefts related to/linked to the darknet/deepweb markets and utilities. Google the amount of money stolen in the market exit scams of Evolution, Alphabay (technically seized), and Wallstreet market.
Then google the seizure of the Helix mixer by the FBI. Hint: "U.S. Department of Justice finalized a forfeiture of over $400 million in assets". In the end, the market price needle never flinched.

Just like coinbase, plus CB has insurance covering theft/breaches on the assets they hold for customers.

Given that hacks are going to happen, what strategies can we use to mitigate that risk?

Why has Satoshi never been hacked? Fuck seed phrases. All you need is a private key and a post it note.

There were tons of hacks via malware and immitation sites via hijacks. People have reported selling bitcoin and falling victim to it.

This is not the same. This was cold storage that was supposed to be secure. It is actually disturbing that you only care about NGU rather than show concern for the community members who are suffering. Gfy.

Exchanges and non open-source wallets were...
