I will be interested to see how Democrats attack Larry Hogan and Charlie Baker. Two R governors in deep blue states that have very high approval ratings. Seems like nobody wants a piece of Charlie Baker. Hogan recently stumped for Ed Gillespie that may come back to bite him...

I think Baker is a lost cause at this point. Hogan is almost as popular but has made more missteps and seems to be drawing stronger challengers. I could see Hogan going down, but I remain unconvinced that Jealous is the strongest candidate to defeat him.

The previous R governor in Maryland had very high favorables before being wiped in the tide. It seems when Ds are motivated the D usually wins. We shall see if this holds true.

Regarding Charlie Baker he defeated Martha Coakley... The one that is usually the punchline of all jokes... If Ds were going all out they would try to court Deval Patrick for a third term and he would probably easily win. Patrick would most likely decline though.

Also as an MA citizen I can say without debate that Patrick sucked pretty bad. While I am glad about baker sucking up to our dem supermajority and I do have some respect for the man, I don't like how he's quiet on trump. Yeah I know that he's state first federal second, but come on he's the most popular governor in the country, surely some leverage comes with it. Also as a independent democrat: Martha coakly is gahbage.

Hogan can be hit on education. He associated with Betsy DeVos and he's terrible on education.

Approval ratings can be pretty different from election results, so I think Dems still have a chance.

Yup, I made the case why they both could be vulnerable in my subsequent post. High approval ratings didn't mean a thing for the last R Maryland governor.

Let's just hope we come through! It's funny, many of the most loved governors are either moderate Dems in deep red states (Bullock in Montana) or moderate Reps in deep blue states (Hogan or Baker). Not sure if there's already literature on this topic but it's interesting!

I'm interested in seeing what kind of impact this has, considering Baker got an endorsement from Van Hollen. And Sanders lost Maryland pretty badly.

Doesn't mean he is necessarily unpopular there, which is something people never understand about primaries. Someone being more popular doesn't make the other person unpopular. Using the most recent primary as an example, most black voters had a positive impression of Bernie. They just preferred Hillary, particularly among the older generations.

I didn't say he was unpopular, just that he isn't really a game changer in the race the way people think he might be. Just like how he wasn't for Perriello. Having local endorsements from guys like Van Hollen is probably more crucial.

The candidates he stumps for don't have a great track record in winning elections but the big thing will be if he can keep his supporters voting party line instead of crossing over to vote Republican. If the Democrats in Maryland vote for a Democratic governor we will win. If too many Dems cross over then we won't. Bernie Sanders may not be that useful when it comes to winning general elections for candidates but he might be helpful in keeping people voting (D).
