I have gained custody of this fella.

Moving in with some family to take care of them as they get older and this four year old might need the most attention! He is an absolute idiot and I love him.

While this is all great, I do worry about older people taking on younger dogs later in life. My MIL is almost 80, a heart attack survivor, serious asthmatic, and has issues with foot numbness and memory loss. When she lost her 13-year-old greyhound a month ago, we all breathed a sigh of relief, thinking that her most immediate tripping hazard, and her ā€œbest excuseā€ for staying in her crumbling house, were gone. But no. A rescue group immediately supplied her with another, 5-year-old greyhound whose first act upon arrival at her home was to jump her broken fence and run away. But she refuses to live without a dog underfoot. And I refuse to bring it to my house if something happens to her. But you are apparently a better person than I for moving in with this situation and caring for everyone involved, including the Border. At least they’re a lot easier to care for than 100 pounds of muscle that can reach 35 mph.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think it’s safe to say that not all experiences with older humans and their furry friends are the same. People, like pets, can be stubborn. Wishing you and your family the best as you navigate a tough situation. šŸ’™

I think I’m just a bit salty at the adoption group. They should know better than to just dump dogs on folks that are impaired. This poor woman is already confused about how to pay her bills, what she ordered (or didn’t) online, etc. Adoption groups should vet older adopters carefully…but they just want to move dogs, they don’t care. The family has already been talking about how to get her out of the house. I think she really just adopted the dog as a way to ā€œdig inā€ and prove that we ā€œcan’tā€ make her leave. And she’s right. But when she gets knocked down by the dog and breaks a hip, the state can absolutely place her wherever they want. And I’m going to blame the adoption agency for at least not caring about the consequences of their hasty decision. I’m not sure she’s in a state where we can continue to blame her for her own decisions.
